CATS WIN 8, LOSE 2 The 1950 Wildcat football team, led by Burl Stidham in his third year as head coach at Bartlesville, had its best season since 1931 in its won-lost total as the Cats lost only to the state-champion Muskogee Roughers and in an upset to the Okmulgee Bulldogs. The 1950 Wildcats beat all three Tulsa high school teams, the first time a Bartlesville foot- ball team has ever been able to accomplish this. The Cats were ranked second in the 6A conference and in out-of-state competition, defeated the strong Springfield, Missouri, team 25 to 0 and Coffeyville, which was ranked as the second best team in Kansas the week before they came to Bartlesville, 32-7. End Kenneth McCullough, who starred on both offense and defense and was one of the state's outstanding punters with a 37. 5 yard average per kick, was named on the all-state teams released by the Tulsa World and the Daily Oklahoman. McCullough was recommend- ed for all-state by the coach of every team he played against. Guard Don Endacott, quar- terback Bill Quintana and halfback Benny Johnson was given honorable mention on the mythical squad. Eight Bartlesville players, every starting senior, were named on the 6A a1l-confer- ence football team. OKLAHOMA SIX AND REGIONAL CHAMPIONS 1951 marked the year the Wildcat basketball team won their first Oklahoma Six con- ference championship since 1940. The Wildcats won their second consecutive regional crown in the tournament played at Bartlesville on March 8, 9 and 10 and entered the state championship tournament in Oklahoma City with aseason's record of 17 wins and 4 losses. The Wildcats won their first four non-conference games before losing to Coffeyville and then lost their first conference tilt at Muskogee. The Cats climbed steadily upward from this and went into first place 'by beating Tulsa Will Rogers. The conference race was close through the entire season. The Wildcats were assured of at least atie for the championship when Tulsa Central lost on their next to last game of the season. Four teams stood a chance of sharing the title if the Cats dropped their final game at Okmul- gee. To win the regionals, the Wildcats had to come from behind against both Ponca City and Pawhuska at the third quarter mark to win in the final minutes. The Wildcats played their first game at Oklahoma City against the Oklahoma City Cen- tral Cardinals. The Cats carried an eight-game winning streak into this game which in- cluded an 11-won and one-lost record on the College-high court. Junior Dallas Dobbs led the scoring for the year with 256 points in Z1 games for an average of IZ. l points per game. Gerald Swope was second with 156 points followed by Jim James with 111, Kenneth McCullough with 101, David Sheldon with 80 points in 14 games, and Larry Hunt with 68 points. 69 Wildcats 30 Nowata Z7 Here Wildcats Z8 Coffeyville Z1 Here Wildcats 28 Dewey 26 There Wildcats 63 Nowata 31 There David Sheldon C251 attempts to block a shot by Tulsa Will Rogei-'5 San- ders C241 in Rogers' game here.
