SEHIUH CLHSS HISTUHU In thrs late sprang of 2000 A D by studymq ihe Conqlom eratronal Becord for 1950 we fmd that the College-Hrgh School class of the same year was the most outstandrng rn the history of Amerrcan hrgh schools Below quoted rs a passage from the facts recorded therern Q Startrng our brrllrant career, we poor confused seventh graders arrrved at Central fthe walls were gray thenj Immedl ately the problems of lockers and comblnatrons blue slips and p1nk sltps and whrte slrps and admrttance slrps, room numbers, mountarns of stairs, the complexltres of floatrng perrods and hrdden rooms presented themselves Qurckly assumrng the responsrbrlrtres but not the prrvlleqes of that superror race of creatures called upper Classmen, we were rntroduced to that erqht letter word called homework Desprte the heavy drudgery lnflrcted by this teachers' byword, the seventh grade glrls strll had time to vamp so many of the older men that the upperclass women frnally oblected The electron of our frrst class officers rnvolved an over whelmrng ma1orrty for the blue eyes and long eye lashes of Bob Brxler as presrdent and Mary Wrrght and Connee Peck as vrce presrdent and secretary lnfused rn all thrs confusron were the memorres of the 'Gay Nrnetres Revue, the scrap paper drrves, the s dances and frnally, sprrng fever and the frnrs of our frrst year at Central Q 1' Armored wrth self confrdence, drgnrty, and half a spoonful of porse we made our appearance on the threshold of the erghth grade lmmedrately the problem of lrterary notebooks, American History notebooks, current event notebooks Home EC note- books, and Scrence notebooks presented themselves Under the presrdency of Gretchen Wlenecke the vrce presr dency of Bob Brxler, and secretaryshrp of Patsy Maylen, the erghth grade reached new herghts of achrevements The marn dramatrc productron that year was an assembly play starrrng Bob Blxler Cmrnus l pr of pantsj and Gretchen Hackmuth as the leading lady A radro play presented by the 8Al and 8A2 musrc classes featured Howard Hackworth as Brng Crosby and frrmly establrshed hrs nrckname as Bing' and Drck Seward as Ted Lewrs charmed the crowd wrth hrs rendrtron of Frankre and Johnny And, as we turned at the end of our erghth grade yearwe noted the loss of Bob Bonlnger from our ranks Also included in the nostalgra of that year was MISS JaCkson's accrdent, the opemng of the Y Hut and frnally, that maqrcal decree as re ward for our labors freshmen Q i At last hrgh school really and who can forget the lunch lrne at Ferndell, the Joumalrsm classes the Latrn classes furrously declrnrng Latrn verbs, the rntra mural basket ball contests durrng the lunch hour, and frnally, real 'steady' couples Bob Brxler presided the second trme as class presrdent, Jim Crocker and Tom Fowler had the offrces of vrce presrdent and secretary Glen Denny took over Jrm s posrtron when Jim movec away and later Glen was succeeded by Kathleen Scanlan Ann Gullrkson was our freshman attendant to the basketball queen Steady couples that year were Pat Alden and Bobby Trimble Helarne Wrrght and Bill McDonald Jane Van Dall and Bob Mayfield Janet Rlney and Ted Ernst, Nancy Hankrns and Pat Garrison and Brng Hackworth and Ann Young And so at last another year had closed behind us and we looked forward to our sophomore year and rergnrng as the big dogs of the school G 1 As sophomores we started off wrth a bang by electing Jane Van Dall presrdent, Bob fl-Ienryj Threlen vrce-presrdent and Bob Hall as student body presrdent Gretchen Wernecke Janet Koopman, Nancy Hankrns, and Jane Alexander headed the Gusher staff and Pat Garrison, Stevre Stevens Tom Fowler l.. E Speegle, and Jim Plunkett represented us on the Wrldcat basketball team Football honorsthat year went to Jack Fowler Bob Thlelen, and L. E Speegle who made the Wrldcat squad Hrghlrghts of the year were the many assemblres, the wrnnrng of All Amerroan by the Gusher staff land the Gusher money makrng camparqnsl Tacky Day wrth Jack Fowler and Patsy Maylen relgnrng as krng and queen The sophomore play, Srxteen rn August featured the capers of Gusty, Jane Alexander and a memorable dramatrc scene by Pat Turk Wrth the sophomore farewell assembly we brd adreu to Central and turn to face lrfe at College-Hrgn We ll never forget our days at Central especrally the gay gang who were SO proud to be sophomores that they wrote SOPHOMOBES 1948 OH the school wall and spent the next few nrghts removrng rt wrth lye Q -nf At College High at last' And Mr Haley And very QFOWH up iunrors we were, too We started off right wrth Tom Fowler at our head assrsted by veep Ann Gullrkson and Dellberatlve Commrttee representatives Nancy Hanklns, Charles Goodhue, and Jerry Glahn We soon showed the lofty senrors who was boss by copprng the lead parts ln the All School play Nancy Hankrns as Anna belle Fuller, Susan Kldd as Madge, and Jack Guardrola as a vlsltrnq actor Our iunror year marked the begrnnrng of the plaster cast procession down ye olde halls Frrst that year was Pat Garrl son followed by Bob Thielen, Don Lehman, Fred Chadsey, L. E Speegle, Francrs Govett, Brll Van Meter in our senror ear Y The Junror class play, Dear Ruth presented Jane Van Dall Helarne Wrrght Pete Nicola Kathleen Scanlan, Jrm Boss, Jack Forsbach, Davrd Maxwell and Janet Koopman in an excellent presentation of thrs delrghtful comedy I-Irghllght of the year for us was the annual Junior Senror Prom Can we ever forget decorating the Country Club for the brg event the thoms on the roses the tubs of fresh flowers and frnally, Prom mght itself with the curfew ln the wee small And then graduation, and the loss of many wonderful frrends rncludrnq Gretchen Wlenecke who reigned as a very gracious basketball queen having decided to graduate ln three years Then we were at last SENIOBS' ' Q i Our senior year was marked by a successful football season, hrghllghted by the series of fractures already men troned Now at last, real grown up electives' The vocatronal home economics taught by Miss Sue Cladwell was qulte popular among the grrls who wrll never forget Janet Cordry s struggle to flnlsh her skin the ink spot on her second garment, and her look of reslgnatron when asked about the third? Martha Neal proved herself a very busy senior, as she drvrded her trme between rergnlng as 1950 football queen and actrng as charrman of the Delrberatlve Committee JGCk Guardrola, Nancy Hankins and Janet Koopman kept things up on the lournalrstrc front the yearbook and the Nautilus Susan Kidd presided over the Pep Cats Bob Thlelen was president of the ' B Club and Gene Kelly reigned as presr dent of the Senior class The All School Play, 'Seven Keys to Baldpate vtas domrnated by an almost entrre senror cast and band activities were rergned over by Melinda Cooper The orchestra made an important trip to Dallas which was partly frnanced by a soc dance hald followrng the coronatlon of Barbara Gibbs as the basketball queen Spring activities rncluded successful track and baseball seasons and an hllarrous Sadie Hawkins' Day fCan we ever forget Koopman ln the barrel our iunror year?l And finally here we are Commemcement, 1950 and 1t's all come so swrftly our Senror Prom, Baccalaureate, the Farewell Assembly and we know we can never forget our high school career nor the friends we've 'node and the teachers we've come to knowl Signed, The Class of 1950 . . . -V . - , . -T I - I , l 1 . .
