PROSTHODONTICS The role of the Class of I9S9 for the next decade will be much more significant than the classes in the past. The Class of ' 89 will be facing a society that is more concerned and knowledgeable about health care in general, and what the expectations of the health care providers should be doing for them. Your class will be confronted with clients asking for a second opinion. Dentistry is no longer a stepchild to medicine, it is an intricate part of it. Your class will be treating people who are living longer. From the very inception, the heart of the practicing dental profession has been restorative treatment. The advance- ments in prosthetic principles, concepts and practices as first described by Pierre Fauchard in the 18th Century were the beginning of modern dental prosthetics. Fauchard ' s ingen- ious prostheses along with other pioneers con- tributed immeasurably to the development of dentistry as a profession. Prosthodontics con- stitutes by far the largest and most difficult part of dentistry, and thus makes it a distinct branch of the art of medicine and gives to it the power to add to health, comfort, and en- joyment to life. Many developments resolving from World War II led to significant advances in prosthetic dentistry. Among the most important innova- tions in the mid-20th Century years, are the high-speed rotary instrumentation for tooth preparation and metal alloys to which porce- lain can be directly bonded. The treatment advances provided by these and other related developments precipitated the full mouth rehabilitation concept which is now widely accepted. Concurrent improve- ments in local anesthetic agents, fourhanded chair side techniques, articulating devices, im- pression materials, cements and plastics for provisional restorations were realized. With a broader spectrum of treatment alternatives available, total patient care opportunities have been enhanced. The biologic physiologic basis for complex clinical prosthetic procedures have been es- tablished and has guided the design and fabri- cation of all types of fixed, removable implants and maxillofacial prostheses. The Class of ' 89 will be involved in the treatment of the medi- cally compromised patient and also in the treatment of the geriatric patient. The Class of ' 89 will see the development of sophisticated techniques, such as, the devel- opment of laser technology in which artificial replacements will be computer designed and programmed. It is our hope that the 1989 Graduates of Columbia will play a significant role in bringing this about. The Faculty of the Division of Prosthodontics would like to congratulate you and extend their sincere best wishes to you in your chosen profession. James W. Schweiger, D.D.S. j
