PEDIA TRIC DENTISTRY Congratulations from the staff of Pediatric Dentistry. It was a challenging four years, but your hard efforts have now come to fruition. We, in Pediatric Dentistry, wish you the best and hope that you include the child in your practice, be it the general practice of dentistry or one of the special- ties. We hope that you will continue to remain a student and a true professional. It is most difficult to remain current in all the areas of our profession during these times. Through our journals, continuing education, and personal dedication, you will be able to practice the level of oral health care you have strived to learn. In the coming years, Pediatric Dentistry will continue to focus on prevention, growth and development guidance, and caring for the child with medical and physically compromising conditions. You have the ability and the judgment to provide basic care to these children. For your child patients you can be the introduction to a higher quality of life through a positive experience in dentistry. You have our best wishes for success and an exciting career in the profession. Dr. Heidi L Hills %A ' - Dr. Lois A. Jackson Dr. Martin J. Davis

PERIODONTICS Periodontics continues to evolve as a dynamic specialty of dentistry. Basic research in periodontics is focusing on identification of the microorganisms in the subgingival plaque, the relationship of the host immune and inflammatory responses to periodontal tissue de- struction, and the cell biology of the periodontium. These advances have ei- ther realized or suggested exciting clini- cat advances that will improve the qual- ity of patient care. For Example, diag- nostic advances will allow identification of patients at risk for development of active periodontal disease, new antimi- crobial and antibiotic therapies are be- ing evaluated as important adjuncts in therapy, new drug delivery systems will offer the opportunity to deliver high concentrations of agents directly to the site of the lesion and surgical proce- dures are being introduced to not only halt disease progression, but to pro- mote the regeneration of lost tissue. These changes promise to make the practice more analytical, and ultimately more fulfilling. As these advances are accompanied by an information explo- sion , ' new graduates must critically evaluate information as it is reported in both professional journals and the lay press. By so doing, we can be assured that we are providing therapy that is tailored to the needs of our patients. Ira B. Lamster, D.D.S.MM.Sc. Drs. Robert Gottsegen, and Murray Schwartz Drs.
