I WILL BE HERE ON TIME AND I EXPECT THE SAME OF YOU. With these fateful words, Dr. B, as he is affectionately known to his students, introduced us to the world of Operative Dentistry. True to his word, he was there every Monday with a smile and a helping hand. He sa w us through numerous pulped out and overextended green teeth and made our first brush with clinical dentistry an interesting learning experience. It ' s due to Dr. B that we managed to tackle those first patients with some sem- blance of confidence. Dr. BRZUSTOWICZ retired last year, his patients will miss him sorely and so will we. Our thanks for all your help. m DR. DANTE TORRESE Dr. Torrese brings flair into the prosthetics department not only with his well known mustache but also with his exuberant personality. He can be found on the clinic floor every Tuesday and Friday like clockwork. Always patient and always willing to lend a hand, he is one of the most sought after instructors on the floor. When asked how to prep a tooth for a crown, Dr. Torrese would reply, with a twinkle in his eyes, Ah, elementary!! Thank you for your dedication and guidance which has made our senior year a more productive and enjoyable learning experience. Dr. RICHARD LICHTENTHAI With summer session I, came the rather intimidating task of dealing with real patients (no more green teeth!), rubber dams and cavity preps that looked nothing like the ideal G. V. Black prep. Thankfully Dr. Lichtenthai was there, to help us through with infinite patience, he walked us through minor crisis and major goofups, never once losing his cheerful attitude. Dr. Lichtenthai is also on the clinic floor during Junior and Senior years keeping an eye on the students and keeping track of the practical. The class of 1989 would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Lichtenthai for being an excellent teacher and friend. IN MEMORY OF BRIAN CRIST Brian Crist, born in Goshen on July IS. 1962. graduated from Goshen Central High School in IdSOand from the University of Rochester in I9S5. An honor student, he also was quite active in basketball, tennis and wrestling teams. Freshman year, as we came together from so many different places to make up the class of I9S9, Brian brought with him. his warmth, great sense of humor and willingness to help. Allan Greenberg and Andrew Krieger uf : Dr. Joshua Most OPERATIVE DENTISTRY One of the main reasons for the prestige of American Restorative Dentistry in the middle decades of the twenti- eth century was its pursuit of excellence using long lasting and proven materials such as amalgam and gold in the restoration of teeth. Operative Dentistry was taught with enthusiasm, conviction and an aim toward perfection. The principles and values of G. V. Black were held in high es- teem and resulted in restorative dentistry that has come close to lasting a patient ' s lifetime. What is happening to the image of restorative dentistry in the eighties is largely due to economic pressures and a public awareness that our standards are falling, and conse- quently the public ' s confidence in dentistry has been shak- en. To correct this image, we will have to deliver high quality, long lasting resto rative dentistry at fair fees. This is a great challenge for you since a great deal of poor dentistry today is being done in the name of cosmet- ics, and many teeth are being sacrificed at its alter. bines reduce enamel and dentin in seconds as if they were subjected to a pencil sharpener. Laboratories have a bonan- za in the metal ceramic restoration to the detriment of the more conservative gold inlay and gold crown which de- mand more skill, patience, and self-discipline on the part of the operator. Enamel is still our finest restorative material, and who has preserved it more than the Operative Dentist through conservative micro preparation of teeth using magnification and rubber dam. Your challenge will be to earn the confidence and re- spect of patients, to render restorative dentistry services that will last a long time, and to serve our profession with dignity and high ethical standards. All the teachers of Operative Dentistry welcome you to our great profession, and wish you success and happiness in dentistry. Endodontics have never been busier as wreckless tur- Edward A. Cain. Jr.. Dr. Louis Mandel Doris Cathy Debbie j ORTHODONTICS It is the responsiblity of every den- tist to have knowledge in diagnostic and treatment procedures which will enable him or her to recognize, classi- fy, differentiate, and assess malocclu- sions accurately. It has been the objec- tive of your courses in orthodontics to provide such knowledge. It is our hope that the courses have given you a high level of awareness of the necessity for consulting with specialty colleagues as a means of coordinating total dental health care. The faculty is confident that the judgment, knowledge, and skills you have gained in orthodontic diagnosis and therapy will always be used in the best interest of your patients. We all wish you the very best in your future careers!!! Drs. A. Davis and V. Mascia Drs. Richard and Monroe Cliedman Dr. M. It was a challenging four years, but your hard efforts have now come to fruition. We, in Pediatric Dentistry, wish you the best and hope that you include the child in your practice, be it the general practice of dentistry or one of the special- ties. We hope that you will continue to remain a student and a true professional. It is most difficult to remain current in all the areas of our profession during these times. Through our journals, continuing education, and personal dedication, you will be able to practice the level of oral health care you have strived to learn. In the coming years, Pediatric Dentistry will continue to focus on prevention, growth and development guidance, and caring for the child with medical and physically compromising conditions. You have the ability and the judgment to provide basic care to these children. For your child patients you can be the introduction to a higher quality of life through a positive experience in dentistry. You have our best wishes for success and an exciting career in the profession. Dr. Heidi L Hills %A _ ' - Dr. Lois A. Jackson Dr. Martin J. Davis Dr. Zedecker Dr. Metcalf Dr. Fleitas, Dr. Jaffe 18 Dr. Davis Dr. Best. Dr. Jackson PERIODONTICS Periodontics continues to evolve as a dynamic specialty of dentistry. Basic research in periodontics is focusing on identification of the microorganisms in the subgingival plaque, the relationship of the host immune and inflammatory responses to periodontal tissue de- struction, and the cell biology of the periodontium. These advances have ei- ther realized or suggested exciting clini- cat advances that will improve the qual- ity of patient care. For Example, diag- nostic advances will allow identification of patients at risk for development of active periodontal disease, new antimi- crobial and antibiotic therapies are be- ing evaluated as important adjuncts in therapy, new drug delivery systems will offer the opportunity to deliver high concentrations of agents directly to the site of the lesion and surgical proce- dures are being introduced to not only halt disease progression, but to pro- mote the regeneration of lost tissue. These changes promise to make the practice more analytical, and ultimately more fulfilling. As these advances are accompanied by an information explo- sion , ' new graduates must critically evaluate information as it is reported in both professional journals and the lay press. By so doing, we can be assured that we are providing therapy that is tailored to the needs of our patients. Ira B. Lamster, D.D.S.MM.Sc. Drs. Robert Gottsegen, and Murray Schwartz Drs. Edward Roth PROSTHODONTICS The role of the Class of I9S9 for the next decade will be much more significant than the classes in the past. The Class of ' 89 will be facing a society that is more concerned and knowledgeable about health care in general, and what the expectations of the health care providers should be doing for them. Your class will be confronted with clients asking for a second opinion. Dentistry is no longer a stepchild to medicine, it is an intricate part of it. Your class will be treating people who are living longer. From the very inception, the heart of the practicing dental profession has been restorative treatment. The advance- ments in prosthetic principles, concepts and practices as first described by Pierre Fauchard in the 18th Century were the beginning of modern dental prosthetics. Fauchard ' s ingen- ious prostheses along with other pioneers con- tributed immeasurably to the development of dentistry as a profession. Prosthodontics con- stitutes by far the largest and most difficult part of dentistry, and thus makes it a distinct branch of the art of medicine and gives to it the power to add to health, comfort, and en- joyment to life. Many developments resolving from World War II led to significant advances in prosthetic dentistry. Among the most important innova- tions in the mid-20th Century years, are the high-speed rotary instrumentation for tooth preparation and metal alloys to which porce- lain can be directly bonded. The treatment advances provided by these and other related developments precipitated the full mouth rehabilitation concept which is now widely accepted. Concurrent improve- ments in local anesthetic agents, fourhanded chair side techniques, articulating devices, im- pression materials, cements and plastics for provisional restorations were realized. With a broader spectrum of treatment alternatives available, total patient care opportunities have been enhanced. The biologic physiologic basis for complex clinical prosthetic procedures have been es- tablished and has guided the design and fabri- cation of all types of fixed, removable implants and maxillofacial prostheses. The Class of ' 89 will be involved in the treatment of the medi- cally compromised patient and also in the treatment of the geriatric patient. The Class of ' 89 will see the development of sophisticated techniques, such as, the devel- opment of laser technology in which artificial replacements will be computer designed and programmed. It is our hope that the 1989 Graduates of Columbia will play a significant role in bringing this about. The Faculty of the Division of Prosthodontics would like to congratulate you and extend their sincere best wishes to you in your chosen profession. James W. You can be justifiably proud of yourselves in receiving a doctorate from Columbia university. As you should realize, academics at Columbia uni- versity are very demanding and you had to spend much time and effort to achieve academic success at this institution. Now, at this point it is important to remember that you should not discard your academic habits. Although this professional plateau has been reached, it is necessary, even mandatory that you continually read and study the appropriated litera- ture and textbooks, in order to forever keep your- selves current . It is one of your responsibilities to encourage this of you. Your patients will de- mand this of you. Sincerely, David J. Zegarelli, D.D.S Dr. David J. Zegarelli Dr. Edward V. It is hoped through your years spent at Columbia that this knowledge has been obtained. As students, you have been exposed to a vast variety of patients with a tremendous number of oral health needs. We hope you have exper- ienced those things that will make you the oral health care provider you intend to be. It is with great enthusiasm that you should go into this profession. We in Hospital Dentistry wish the class of 1989 best wishes and congratulations on their accom- plishments. Ronnie Myers, D.D.S. Dr. Susan Crawford Dr. Ronnie Myers THE CENTER FOR CLINICAL RESEARCH The establishment of a center for clinical research in dentistry Columbia University is a response to major changes that have been taking place in the patterns of dental disease and the nature of dental care, in the growing interest of the public in prevention of disease and maintenance of health, and to the opportunities these changes provide for contributing to the future of dentistry. All students should be familiar with the research process and should develop a critical sense and an ability to evaluate the supporting data for new materials and techniques. The clinical research center can help provide the appropriate attitude and skills. Irwin D. Mandel D.D.S. Dr. Irwin D. Mandel Dr. Ali Nairn ' ' Dr. Joan Barton. RDH. MS MA. Dr. C. In addition to its previous responsibilities in prevention of plaque initiated diseases, specifically; caries and early gingivitis, the division is now monitoring and supervising clinic infection control procedures. Every effort is made to focus on the role of the student practitioner in maintenance of oral health and prevention of transmis- sion of infectious agents from dentist to patient and vice versa. This new direction and its potential impact on the practice of dentistry has resulted in changes in the didactic portion of the preventive dentistry curriculum. The new didactic program emphasizes acquisition and transmission of infectious diseases of the oral cavity and thus the title of the main lecture series given by the division has been changed from cariology to prevention and management of oral infectious diseases. J. JALALI a MRS. MELICENT MARRETT Who could forget that afternoon at the end of second year when we were first introduced to Mrs. Marrett. Many of us sat stunned and speechless as we were being briefed on clinic procedures and policies in preparation for our first patient encounter. Mrs. Marrett strutted as she gave us a detailed description which we were expected to commit to memory then and there, but much to her dismay was forgotten by most. Her famous words that afternoon were, It is a must, a M-U-S-T, that this manual be followed at all times; a must that a four-part form be completed at all times, etc., etc. Over the past two years, Mrs. Marrett steadfastly strove to mold us into competent and organized professionals. She quickly shed her stern exterior and many of us came to know her as a warm, caring individual who had the best interest of her student doctors at heart. She treated us with respect We have many fond memories of our clinical days, including our 2 p.m. date on Thursdays- if you forgot that then you were given a reprieve at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily with an out-guide. We will never forget you, Mrs. Marrett. With great respect and admiration, we salute you, the Matriarch of the class of ' 89. -, SPECIAL THANKS TO DR. STEVEN LEPOWSKY When we entered SDOS in 1985, Dr. Lepowsky was a senior dental student who was involved in virtually every student organization in the school. Those of us who knew him during that year, became familiar with his easy going personality and his willingness to lend a helping hand or offer a word of advice. Additionally, he provided many of us with the now famous Lepowsky notes which were used in lieu of transcripts. When he returned to Columbia SDOS as a clinical operative instructor, it was apparent that those qualities remained. He was instrumental in building our confidence in opera- tive clinic during the pivotal junior year. During the senior year, although rarely on the clinic floor, many of us continued to look to him for guidance and instruction. He assisted us in the preparation for our residency interviews and wrote many letters of recommenda- tion. Dr. Lepowsky, for all your guidance and assistance, we the Class of ' 89 offer our sincere thanks and appreciation. a DR. LUCIUS BATTLE Senior year has been greatly enhanced by the presence of Dr. Lucius Battle. His 25+ years in the Army here and abroad, in addition to his experiences at Sloan Kettering, establishes him as an instructor with a wealth of Prosthodontic knowledge. Whether it be explaining the mysteries of RPD design or laboring with us over centric relation, Dr. Battle always treats his students in a patient, considerate, and most importantly in a professional manner. No matter what went wrong on the clinic floor he is always there with a sweet smile, good-natured humor, and clinical expertise. We also knew that if things continue to go wrong Dr. Battle would still be there at the end of a 12 hour workday to help make things right . We admire and respect him for his bound- less energy and dedication. He has a special place in our hearts. She sat there in the warm light of morning sunshine through stained glass windows and I knew then that I had to meet her. After mass on that memorable Sunday morning, I managed the courage to say hello and awkwardly offered to walk her home. I realized then that this was the girl of my dreams, the woman of my future. Two years later on the first anniversary of our going steady I gave her a little gold bracelet. Inscribed on that bracelet were the words of a sincere young man who knew he had found that elusive treasure of unconditional love. Soon we will celebrate our eleventh wedding anniversary. As I sit here today, relishing in the pride and admiration of her success and graduation from Columbia, I am holding that little bracelet and reading that same inscription of years past. Today I am filled with the happiness of knowing that those innocent words, conceived many years ago, mean even more today than they did back then.
