Columbia University in the City of New York | New York, N.Y. 10032 SCHOOL OF DENTAL AND ORAL SURGERY Office of the Dean 630 West 168th Street May 1, 1986 Dear Class of 1986, Graduation is not only the end of your long process of formal educa- tion but the beginning of your new career as a health professional. There were times along the long and difficult road to receiving your degrees that vou wondered whether the hard work was worth it. Sometimes after listening. to different opinions of experts on the changing environment for health care in this country you had doubts whether you selected the correct career choice. After all is said and done, the faculty of the Columbia University, School of Dental and Oral Surgery see for you a bright future and satisfying career in the dental profession. Your hard work will pay off and you are the generation to which we entrust the future. Your record here at Columbia has demonstrated to me that the gradu- ates of our programs are destined to play important leadership roles in the profession. That provides me with great confidence that the profession will be in good hands because I know first hand of the thorough preparation you have received at Columbia for that role. Seeking the right words as a send off to you is always difficult. A quote from a 1930 radio address given by Dean Alfred Owre (Dean SDOS 1927- 1933) expresses best the rewards you will find in dentistry. In short, to a young person with the necessary qualifica- tions, modern dentistry, as it promises to develop, offers in one way or another a rare opportunity for professional satis- faction and growth, as well as social recognition. It also offers, as few professions can, the satisfying in his daily work of the creative instinct. This, in the last analysis, probably affords the greatest of human satisfactions. Except for the need to change the pronoun his to his her to reflect the dramatic and positive recent interest in dentistry by women, the quote by Dean Owre is as appropriate today for Columbia graduates as it was then. As previous students have done for decades, you came to Columbia in order to develop yourselves to the highest level possible. The faculty is proud of your accomplishments. We know you will succeed and find the satisfaction in dentistry you justly deserve. Sincerely yours, Allan J. Tormicola, D.D.S. lc
