Columbia University in the City of New York | New York, N.Y. 10032 SCHOOL OF DENTAL AND ORAL SURGERY Office of the Dean 630 West 168th Strc December 21, 1984 Dear Class of 1985, Several years ago you made one of the most important decisions of your life. You decided to seek a Columbia education to prepare you for your professional life. Most of you were accepted at four or five other professional schools, yet you chose Columbia. Why? I know there have been numerous times when you asked yourselves that question over your years here! One of the main reasons you chose Columbia was the school ' s excellent academic reputation for educating its students with an indepth knowledge. Hence, as you struggled with the basic sciences you knew ultimately it would pay off for you. The clinical years had their highs and lows also but through it came clear the faculty ' s message of excellence and concern in the caring for patients. Yes, we believe you have been pushed here at Columbia. We know there were times of great stress, but we also know that you go forth with clear thinking and an adherence to a basic philosophy which will enable you to successfully cope during a time of some confusion in our profession. As you begin to undertake the responsibilities of the profession, you will be faced with many challenges. You are well equipped to handle them. While at first times might be difficult, you will join previous Columbia graduates and find great success and satisfaction in the profession of dentistry. Please remember that this faculty is always available for you. We wish you the best and hope you will stay close to the school throughout your professional life. Sincerely, Han J. Pormicola, D.D.S. Allan J. Dean Ac 16

I Am Not Resigned Edna St. Vincent Millay I am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground So it is, and so it will be, for so it has been, time out of mind Into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely. Crowned with lilies and with laurel th ey go: but I am not resigned Lovers and thinkers, into the earth with you Be one with the dull, the indiscriminate dust A fragment of what you felt, of what you knew A form, a phrase remains but the best is lost 16 The answers quick and clear, the earnest look, the laughter, the love They are gone They are gone to feed the roses. Eloquent and curled Is the bloom. Fragrant is the bloom I know. But I do not approve More precious was the light in your eyes, than all the roses of the world.
