Columbia University in the Cilv ul New York I New York. N.Y. 1UU3L ' SCHOOL OF DENTAL. AND ORAL SURGT.RY Office of tne Dean 530 west 168th Street January 4, 1984 Dear Class of 1984, You begin your careers in dentistry during a momentous year. Im- mortalized by George Orwell ' s book, this year was feared by many as a time of depersonalization of society. Technologic advances, such as computers, became the weapons of a repressive government and used to sub- jugate the people. Instead, today scientific achievements are benefitting our society. In our own field, for example, the public is enjoying the advantages of advances in fundamental knowledge in all areas of dentistry. Preventive measures are eliminating disease and oral malformations. New biomaterials are simplifying some restorative procedures and advances in surgical tech- niques are making possible corrective procedures previously unavailable. You join a profession in active growth and enter it during its most interesting and exciting phase. Your Columbia education has been thorough and diverse. It has prepared you well to succeed in the current profession- al environment and it should have stimulated you to use scientific achieve- ments to further mankind. You have earned the right to become responsible members of the dental profession and the faculty is proud of your accomplishments. I offer you my congratulations and best wishes for happiness. Sincerely yours, Allan J. Formicola, D.D.S. Dean

DEDICATIONS Dr. Davis is a special man. His vivacious lectures and enthusi- astic instruction in pedodontics made the transition from text- book assignments to clinical situations as easy as possible. He always lent an ear to any problems encountered. As Director of our Senior Practice Program, Dr. Davis again shines. He has made our senior year as pioneers of this new program a very enjoyable learning experience. His impeccable sense of organization, creativity, humor, and leadership are large- ly responsible for making the program a huge success. In short. Dr. Davis is a man for whom our class holds deep respect. We are proud to become his colleagues and are proud to have known this special human being (in spite of his taste in socks). Dr. Zane is an instructor with boundless energy; a rolemodel for students and faculty alike. Although he is the Group Leader and a prosthetics instructor for Group III (of the Senior Practice Program), he frequently can be found with students from other groups, tirelessly working with those who ask for his help. He is known as the practical dentist on the clinic floor, always eager to teach. The words dedicated worker accurately describe Dr. Zane. Students learn new techniques with him as he often goes beyond the scope of what is taught in the pre-clinical syllabus. It is not uncommon to see him stay beyond 4:30 PM to assist and advise in clinical procedures. Dr. Zane is a dentist who commands respect; a real dentist!
