He answered with the statement A Single Sole Dwelling in Two Bodies. So does describe Dr. Moreinis and his relationship with us. His first year as Dean for Student Affairs was our first year at Columbia. We struggled together. His understanding, his helpfulness, his friendliness and warmth, directly helped those of us in our individ- ual times of need. Dr. Abel Moreinis was a good man and a good man is the best friend and therefore soonest to be chosen, longer to be retained and indeed, never to be parted with. DR. S. ABEL MOREINIS DEDICATIONS Dr. Davis is a special man. His vivacious lectures and enthusi- astic instruction in pedodontics made the transition from text- book assignments to clinical situations as easy as possible. He always lent an ear to any problems encountered. As Director of our Senior Practice Program, Dr. Davis again shines. He has made our senior year as pioneers of this new program a very enjoyable learning experience. His impeccable sense of organization, creativity, humor, and leadership are large- ly responsible for making the program a huge success. In short. Dr. Davis is a man for whom our class holds deep respect. We are proud to become his colleagues and are proud to have known this special human being (in spite of his taste in socks). Dr. Zane is an instructor with boundless energy; a rolemodel for students and faculty alike. Although he is the Group Leader and a prosthetics instructor for Group III (of the Senior Practice Program), he frequently can be found with students from other groups, tirelessly working with those who ask for his help. He is known as the practical dentist on the clinic floor, always eager to teach. The words dedicated worker accurately describe Dr. Zane. Students learn new techniques with him as he often goes beyond the scope of what is taught in the pre-clinical syllabus. It is not uncommon to see him stay beyond 4:30 PM to assist and advise in clinical procedures. Dr. Zane is a dentist who commands respect; a real dentist! Columbia University in the Cilv ul New York I New York. N.Y. 1UU3L ' SCHOOL OF DENTAL. AND ORAL SURGT.RY Office of tne Dean 530 west 168th Street January 4, 1984 Dear Class of 1984, You begin your careers in dentistry during a momentous year. Im- mortalized by George Orwell ' s book, this year was feared by many as a time of depersonalization of society. Technologic advances, such as computers, became the weapons of a repressive government and used to sub- jugate the people. Instead, today scientific achievements are benefitting our society. In our own field, for example, the public is enjoying the advantages of advances in fundamental knowledge in all areas of dentistry. Preventive measures are eliminating disease and oral malformations. New biomaterials are simplifying some restorative procedures and advances in surgical tech- niques are making possible corrective procedures previously unavailable. You join a profession in active growth and enter it during its most interesting and exciting phase. Your Columbia education has been thorough and diverse. It has prepared you well to succeed in the current profession- al environment and it should have stimulated you to use scientific achieve- ments to further mankind. You have earned the right to become responsible members of the dental profession and the faculty is proud of your accomplishments. I offer you my congratulations and best wishes for happiness. Sincerely yours, Allan J. Formicola, D.D.S. Dean 4M FACULTY ADMINISTRATION rh m, s «0 m. 4 sjM tJMM. A,W|K? s? a k m % M 38? ADMINISTRATION I S. Football, volleyball, track and field was enjoyed to the beat of music while grilled hamburgers and hotdogs filled the air. Here gathered a group of people, so different from one another, yet so alike in that they attended Columbia School of Dental and Oral Surgery. DONNA PICCINNINI, R.D.H. 15} Once, when we were very young, You looked at me and said, I think I love you. And I bristled slightly (as young girls do). And I said to you, Think? You only think you love me? You mean you do not know? For at that moment I knew love. I was on intimate terms with Cole Porter lyrics, And I cried when I read Wuthering Heights. But now that I have grown up I know the timeless treasure of your words. For love must have a way to grow, And you found the way so long ago. You took the time to think our love . . . And still you do. A good love takes thinking through. And living with. And I knew The first morning I woke and touched you next to me . . . I, too, could say, I think I love you. 154 ELIZABETH K. ROSENBLATT, R.D.H. SHEILA WYATT, R.D.H. SENIOR B ' S To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticise others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. JENNIFER DEN GEL, R.D.H. fc . T VICTORIA DENGEL, R.D.H. Chief Apache Red of Cheyenne (Ibsen) Guess who cleaned those teeth? My dog got lost, my car broke down, but I am still here before 6:00 REMEMBER WHEN Chickpea came to every class, Janet G. wore pantyhose and high heeled shoes, Dr. Batt dropped all her pens, Dr. Ely talked to a cadaver, Janet G. didn ' t know a hamburger got turned over to be cooked, Lori came up with little sayings for the Professional final, we had our first patient, we had to study for Perio, local anesthesia and POHS all in the same week, Janet G. sprayed water on Liz, we walked into the elevators of Health Science and never knew what floor or room number our class was in, we all first met each other, Liz told Janet G. the first day take a bagel , we took those delightful impressions on each other, someone charted a 7mm pocket on a pontic, Janet G. found that brown eggs came from brown chickens, Liz got an ironing board, but didn ' t know how to use it - what an education Columbia has given her, Lori got drunk at Bard Hall parties and fell down in front of Maxwell, we went to Nanny Rose and on the way back saw a bag lady with a twist tie, we partied and said Coffee, Tea, or Prophy to Kathy, Lori cried in front of the room because she couldn ' t put her Rinn instruments together correctly, Maria kissed a dental student in the elevator of Maxwell, practically all of our class failed Anatomy and Physiology, our instruments played a disappearing act, we gave our first injection, we skipped class to play Pac-Man, Janet G. first cleaned her own bathroom, Chickpea was always a part of the class, we couldn ' t fulcrum, we went to Bard parties and were the 1st to arrive and the last to leave, we finally all passed A P, Mrs. Ibsen climbed a lion at the barbecue, we took a train to Harlem, we finished typing Remember Whens. GOOD LUCK SENIORS! JUNIORS Remember when the three muskateers flew to Biochem, Joe, Frank, Donna and Mair had their first annual meeting of the Bleeding hearts club, Don, Mair and Joe drove down the G.W. bridge the wrong way, we erroneously carved out of the typodont only to find out later that we chopped off the contact areas and lowered the incisal edge by 3 mm, Tuffie became real on the special day of October 21, Farah spent all night before the physio, midterm trying to propanolize MaryAnn, and it wasn ' t even on the test, the veal marsala was more like marsala and Frank got sick and Doug ate all the leftovers. ODE TO A DENTAL HYGIENE STUDENT She sits in class all day, listening to what all the teeth have to say, She dreams of that plaque, on the front, sides and back, Digging deep in the back of a mouth, she explores East, West, North and South, She ' s fearless going where no brush has gone before, ready to curettage, this means war, With sweat on her brow and determination on her face, This is the Beginning of that everlasting race, Will justice prevail, will she be worthy of her floss, or will those tiny cavity men reign, her loss Three hours on one patient, brain surgery takes less time, But what is at stake, it ' s sugar, sweets and slime So she works all day long, and at the end She ' s conquered that plaque and made the patient a friend.
