Dental Columbian 1982 1 9 8 2 Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery Dean Allan J. Formicola Columbia University in the City of New York , New York, N.Y. 10032 SCHOOL OF DENTAL AND ORAL SURGERY 630 West 16atn street Office of the Dean May 20, 1982 Dear Class of 1982, In September of 1978, we both started our Freshman year at the School of Dental and Oral Surgery, Columbia University you as predoctoral D.D.S. students and me as Dean. We have shared two common experiences during the past four years: the assimilation of new knowledge and the gaining of confidence in our own abilities. Each day over the past four years you struggled to learn a tremendous volume of new and difficult basic science and clinical information. I learned of your hopes and aspirations and those of the faculty. Then, I learned how to convey those thoughts to others outside our school. Confidence in yourselves soared as you found out that you could master the new knowledge required of you and could even practically apply that know- ledge in the treatment of your patients . I gained more confidence each year as I realized that those outside the School saw our student body and faculty as worthy to support because you were unified in the goal of excellence in the pursuit of knowledge. Today, you will graduate from the School and use your new knowledge and confidence to pave a bright future for yourselves, our profession and for the public we serve. You have helped me remain confident in the future of our School because you have demonstrated to me through your enthusiasm and excel- lence that it is worth the daily struggle to provide a Columbia education to future generations of students. As my first SDOS graduating class, the Class of 1982 will always remain special. Please accept my appreciation for your help as I made the transition from Freshman to Senior Dean. On behalf cf the Faculty, we congratulate you on your accomplishments and encourage you to continue a close association with us in the future. Sincerely yours, QuaJl Allan J. rormicola, D.D.S. Dean lc Dr. Daniel Budasoff Dr. Daniel Budasoff is truly an example of a man who teaches above and beyond the call of duty. For several months, on his time, he arranged for a series of lectures in areas of pros- thetics which he felt would be of interest and of value. His enthusiasm attracted many people over and over again, producing an enjoyable learning experi- ence. It seemed that these 5 o ' clock optional lec- tures were better attended than the noontime re- quired lectures. As an instructor on the floor, his standards are high but realistic, and his ultimate goals are quality patient care and quality learning. Dr. Budasoff — teacher, friend, advisor. Thanks a lot, Dan. Dr. Richard Lichtenthal Dr. Richard Lichtenthal may easily be recognized on the clinic floor. He is the operative instructor with endless amounts of energy, an ear-to-ear smile, and a year round glowing tan. He is honest and fair, and he has the patience of a saint. If positive rein- forcement is the needed prescription, Dr. Lichten- thal is the man to see. He has put sound educational principles, quality dentistry and a humane, con- siderate attitude into a package which provides den- tal students with an unsurpassed learning experi- ence. We are honored to have been exposed to such a warm-hearted, light-spirited instructor par excel- lence and we truly appreciate it. s w smmin HHHHB 10 ' k 12 Blessed are those Who engage in lively debates With the helplessly mute For they shall be called Dentists 14 Administration Allan J. Brought together from all over the country, from over 30 different universities, with a broad spectrum of interests and backgrounds, this fortunate group of 60 unskilled, moderately educated, young people were about to metamorphosize into highly trained, superbl educated professionals. We had been granted the privilege to begin the sacred rites of passage. Quickly and unexpectedly, we were beset by anxiety, tension, uncertainty, graying, thinning hair, and class attrition. Immersed in the basic sciences of Biochemistry, Physiology and Pharmacology, names like Moss, books like Gray ' s Anatomy, and the persistent odor of cadaver fluid became household familiarities. And as fall turned to winter, and winter to spring, the basic sciences changed to basic dental sciences, and basic dental sciences soon changed to the sciences of clinical dentistry. All subject matter was now orally prefixed. Oral Medicine, Surgical Anatomy of the Head and Neck, Operative and Prosthetic Dentistry were now the norm. Strange abbreviations like ANUG, MOD, CD, ZOE, and RUSS became commonplace, second nature, banal. Laughter, joking, friendship, and good times became as familiar as all-day practical, National Boards, fall picnics, spring dinners, Asteroids, and Yankee baseball. But let us not forget that outside of this protective institutional womb, the world kept turning. It was a time when we saw the price of gold skyrocket, interest rates boil, and tuition double. It was a time of escalating violence and crime, political unrest abroad. The President and Pope were shot. Within these pages we have captured only a fraction of our four-year journey. Unfortunately, there have been those who were inadvertently left out, names misspelled, or dark, blurry photos submitted. Please forgive us. For this we apologize. So here we are, about to enter the fraternity. We have been hazed and professionalized. We have coped and endured. The Class of 1982 has arrived! MJR 184 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES 0064272192
