You are now completing the long and difficult process of a professional education. There have been times when the going was rough and you ' ve thought to yourself - Is it all worth it? It will be worth all of your efforts because your degree permits you to assume both the responsibilies and benefits of a professional life. You are well prepared to discharge your responsibilities with a caring attitude and you will find that if you adopt such an attitude great benefits will accrue to you as individuals. In going out to join the profession the problems you will face will be complex and difficult ones. The challenge to you is to solve the problems with an analytic approach, and one that takes into account the concerns of others. You have demon- strated to me and the faculty through your successful completion of our curriculum that you have the intellect to adopt an analytic approach to problem solving. In my personal contacts with you, you have also demonstrated your willingness to under- stand the other person ' s point of view and needs. These traits, intellect and concern for others, will not only help you to serve others, but will enable you to fulfill your- selves as individuals through your profession. Dean ■ In rhis memorable year of 1980, rhe odvenr of a new decode ond o year dominored by such memorable events as rhe Olympics, rhe Class of 1980 wishes ro recognize rhree of our own gold medalisrs who in our judgemenr have shared wirh us rheir experrise, knowledge, exper- ience and compassion in making our long hours of training here ar Columbia more fulfilling, sarisfying and pleasing. Somewhere amidsr our clinical hours of Training, almost all of us have hod rhe opporruniry ro work under rhe watchful eye of rhe endo deparrmenr ' s mosr illustrious figure, Dr. Irving Fried. The seniors of rhe Class of 1980 wish to acknowledge Dr. Fried for his qualiry of insrrucrion, and natural ability to relore ro students. His methods are Socraric - he cross examines our morives and proceedures, answers quesrions wirh more quesrions, and quizzes our diagnosric abiliries. His efforrs force one ro think, making our clinical experiences exercises in learning. His srandards are uncompromising, and demand excellenr work. Dr. Fried, srar member of several endodonric dynamic duos, exhibirs oursranding rapporr wirh his srudenrs. He somehow manages ro parricipare in our garherings and social events. His populariry can be arresred by rhe large crowd of fans surrounding him or any parry. We rhank Dr. Fried, rhe rail, cosmopoliran world Traveller, for being an inquisiror of rhe besr sorr - and for his own inimirable way of making endodontics a pleasure. Srudenrs have praised Dr. Jerome Zone in rhe pasr, and rhis year rhe eighrh floor thanks him once again. This occasion is special fot us, in that only through our rimes spent with Dr. Zone can we rhank him rrurhfully. No doubr, rhe fosresr man in rhe world, Dr. Zone gives his all ro students needing assistance. From the opening bell he is constantly on the move, answering quesrions ond sirring in consranrly rolling chairs. His primary concern is our educarion, and his enrhusiasm and core only serve ro moke rhings rhar much easier. In Dr. Zone ' s helpful advice, can be seen borh rhe dedicored faculry member ond professional. The parienr ' s besr inreresr is primary. Ar rhe end of a rypical day, Dr. Zone leaves a bir rired as he checks rhar everyone has been seen and assisred. We rhank him for oil his rime and energy, wirhour which we would nor have learned or accomplished as much. The pleasure of doing operorive on Fridays on rhe seventh floor con be arrribured ro Dr. Richard Lichrenrhal. He is an insrrucror wirh o realistic approach ro denrisrry, who rakes an acrive inreresr in rhe srudenr, rhe srudenr ' s work, ond rhe parienr He always seems ro have rime for everyone - never will he rurn you away if you ore in need of help. There ore no long lines following or wairing for Dr. Lichrenrhal. He knows all his srudenrs and somehow finds rhe rime ro see oil of us, even when he is rhe only insrrucror in sighr. In passing, he will srop ro ask if oil goes well or if help is needed. One can rhen undersrand why Dr. Lichrenrhal has rime ro reach, run a Thriving procrice and be such an acrive member of rhe alumni - a rrue indication of his inreresr and devotion ro our olmo morer. There is a cerroin doss rhar dominates his warm personaliry, friendly disposirion, ond sense of humor. Dr. Richard Lichrenthal, the Pierre Cardin of rhe operorive department, has the endearing qualiry of dealing wirh rhe profession of denrisrry on o human level. He is one of rhe few insrrucrors, who in his honest and realisric criricism will also find room for some much needed posirive reinforcement - o qualiry rhor shows his concern for insrilling wirhin us o sense of self-con fidence.
