« h i I :. 1776 1976 How can we explain the noted refusal of our Nation ' s Father to publicly expose his pearly whites? Many claim it was because he was condemned to wear a special denture which upon the slightest giggle might spring out of his mouth, or reveal the fact that his teeth actually belonged to a hippo. This is fact, and it is also fact that 200 years ago Den- tistry ranked lowest among all healing arts. There existed no Dental Schools, no form of organization or guidelines and no principles or precedent. Dentistry instead came from an assembly of barbers, tooth drawers, surgeons and charlatans. (Is it conceiveable that Dr. Freeway was fighting for his space during those Dark Ages of Dentistry?) Thus began American Dentistry; and it has been 200 years of American Dentistry that have made many aware of its vast future, 2 00 years of American Dentistry that have left many proud and some frustrated. It is through this yearbook that we wish to bring to light 200 years of American Dentistry. A. Weisenfeld J. Sher DEDICATION The man to whom this year ' s edition of our yearbook is dedicated brings to mind some words written by Miguel Cervantes, seemingly for him, when he said, No man is more than another, unless he does more than another. For this is truly a man who has distinguished himself by doing more. This man is Dr. Jerome Zane. Dr. Zane has traveled a great part of our journey through school and he has continually demonstrated an acute awareness of both our clinical and personal needs. He has consistently encouraged us to strive for that highest degree of perfection which will someday help us approach excellence in our chosen pro- fession. His unique manner of approaching our clinical uncertainties as a teaching experience with its main objective being comprehension and eventual perfection, have made all of us his gracious admirers. It seems then natural that our memories of school have mention of such a special person. Therefore, it is with a great deal of pleasure, gratitude, and honor that we, the graduating class of 1976, dedicate our yearbook to Dr. Jerome Zane, the teacher, the man, and our friend. David Drohan •■1 TO THE CLASS OF 1976 On behalf of the faculty and the supporting staff I extend to the Class of 1976 the happiest congrat- ulations on having earned the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery and I offer the warmest welcome as a full-fledged member of the dental profession. Yours is an especially noteworthy class — THE CLASS OF ' 76 — THE BICENTENNIAL CLASS! But it is not the historical factor alone which clothes your class with a unique and memorable mantle! Rather, it is the pride with which we identify your class, based on superior scholastic attain- ments, mature professionalism and unselfish contributions to the community. Forgive me however, for emphasizing that the happiness of graduation must be tempered with the realization that as a health professional you have inherited a huge responsibility, namely, that of con- stantly improving your knowledge and skills by a continuous program of on-going education, one which only ends with termination of life. I am confident that our faculty has succeeded in firmly implanting the ideals of dentistry but what is more important, I have the utmost faith that your careers will create admirable reflections of dental edu- cation at Columbia University and that we will constantly derive pride from this Class of ' 76! GREENE EDMUND APPELBAUM, D.D.S. 1899-1975 IN MEMORIUM We, the Class of 1976, with respect and appreciation remember Professor Edmund Appelbaum. He was our teacher. Joining the original school in 1926, he came to the School of Dental and Oral Surgery at the Medical Center in 1928. He perservered through the vagueries of the administration of nine Deans. Great names in science shaped his career; Dr. Horace Wood — the eminent paleontologist, William Gregory, Milo Hellman, Charles Boedecker, Moses Dia- mond and Daniel Ziskind; and Dr. Appelbaum became a colleague of the great names in his field; Weinman, Schour, Gottlieb, Orban, and Kronfeld. Dr. Appel- baum became their respected equal. Edmund Appelbaum loved dentistry, all of dentistry. One of his favorite stories relates how Balint Orban came upon him one day in the office he shared with Moses Diamond, as he was finishing an inlay casting. Eagerly seizing the piece, Orban said to Diamond, How wonderful it is to find a histologist who can cast a perfect inlay. He was unquestionably one of the first true dental scientists. He maintained, with Boedecker, the reality of the organic matrix of enamel, when the entire profession openly derided the concept. He founded the field of microradiography and his work in this field established the morphological basis for the current use of fluoridation to decrease the incidence of dental caries. We knew Edmund Appelbaum in his twilight years. We knew a kind and helpful man who possessed a special insight into the problems of the learner. One would never know that this man, who always had enough time for each one of us, was the same man who helped to embed dentistry as a respected, scientific profession. The students of the School of Dental and Oral Surgery will miss and remember him. Excerpts of the above are from the eulogy delivered by Dr. Melvin Moss. If Ms. Gloria Girardo Is. Mary Davis Is.
