Prof. In addition to extending our sincere feelings of congratulations and best wishes. we of the Division of Stomatology, offer to the graduates of the Class of 1959 one parting thought. In spite of our determined efforts to make you aware of the vast, current knowledge in the broad field of stomatology and in spite of our attempts to acquaint you with the more likely paths of present and future investigations together with their possible implications in dental practice, we are annually faced with the obvious conclusion that our very best efforts in both directions are woefully inade- quate. The all too short undergraduate years — the problems of dealing with processes of learning wherein clinical experiences are minimal — and the increasingly important necessity of emphasizing correlations of basic science knowledge to the many and diverse abnormalities and diseases of the mouth and jaws prohibits sufficient depth and breadth of learning experiences which should be considered essential for the new graduate. One might counter this predictable and recurrent situation with the statement that a few years of general practice experience will adequately complete the process of maturing into skillful practitioners. Undoubtedly, clinical experience is an excellent teacher but just as important, and to my mind more important, is the necessity of broadening and developing one s present knowledge and skill in dentistry through continued and constant learning processes — keeping abreast of current literature — participating in educational activities of dental societies — enrolling in graduate instruc- tional programs — and. if possible, conducting personal investigations into problems of dental interest. To believe that the mere possession of a dental license is sufficient qualification to practice dentistry is a severe handicap to success. DR. EDWARD V. ZEGARELLI Norman Joondeph, Charles L.
