FOREWORD Since man first faced the open seas, he has depended upon a lighthouse for guidance. For hundreds of years, storm-beaten sailors have watched for the light to warn them of land, or dangerous rocks and reefs. O f these lighthouses was located on the Isle of Pharos, in Egypt. Constructed ne o of stone, it was not the slender tower that iorrns today's lighthouse. The Pharos of - ' t Al andria was a massive edifice that rose 445 feetg higher than a thirty six s ory ex building. Since it was the largest lighthouse ever bu1lt,it became one of the Seven ' l W ders of the World. From it, we have derived the name of your an.nua . on We of this year's annual staff, sincerely hope that the 1965 Pharos will h f u serve as our COA lighthouse. Miss Boomer was one of the first faculty members to come to the College of the Albemarle. She was here before the college opened its doors, working to create a library adaptable to the courses that were to be taught. Because of her unending efforts, Whitehurst Library contains substantial material for research in all subject fields. 2
