J Q A , , Z , , Y , ' a 1 , N X W 1 W W i W 1 W . I 3 FOREWORD Since man first faced the open seas, he has depended upon a lighthouse for guidance. For hundreds of years, storm-beaten sailors have watched for the light to warn them of land, or dangerous rocks and reefs. O f these lighthouses was located on the Isle of Pharos, in Egypt. Constructed ne o of stone, it was not the slender tower that iorrns today's lighthouse. The Pharos of - ' t Al andria was a massive edifice that rose 445 feetg higher than a thirty six s ory ex building. Since it was the largest lighthouse ever bu1lt,it became one of the Seven ' l W ders of the World. From it, we have derived the name of your an.nua . on We of this year's annual staff, sincerely hope that the 1965 Pharos will h f u serve as our COA lighthouse. May you use this annual as a guiding lig t or yo r Y future years. May it also serve as a light of remembranceg recalling many 1 f h Albemarle. memories of friends, and of the days you spent at the College o t e Miss Boomer was one of the first faculty members to come to the College of the Albemarle. She was here before the college opened its doors, working to create a library adaptable to the courses that were to be taught. Because of her unending efforts, Whitehurst Library contains substantial material for research in all subject fields. 2 Because of her d e dxc ation to the college, and her help to the students, we dedicate the 1965 CIDAPOE to iss nriense unmet just as a hghthouse guxdes voyagers to safety, so does Mxss Boomer guxde us on our quest for knowledge.
