ferent things to do. We have our clubs, sports and, of course, classes. The school also has many ups and downs; winning seasons and slumps; Homecoming and semester tests. The one thing that never fails, however, is our PRIDE. It's shown in our joy when we win and our anger when we lose. We show our pride by freezing at football games and studying for tests. This pride is due to hard work and a team effort. This effect is made by many people; from the Booster Club and the Band Parents, to the faculty and the students. We would like to show all the dif- ferent emotions we put into our own ver- sion of Tiger Pride. These range from craziness and fun- times to concentration and frustration, and all of it involves hard work. During the summer of 1982, 13 students from Colfax High School journeyed to sunny Spain with Intra- America Student Programs. Chaperones were Mr. and Mrs. Larry Pace and Mrs. Dolores Rankin. Three students from Ankeny High School joined the group for the trip. After arriving in Madrid, the Iowa group met with students from Min- nesota, Montana, and West Virginia. The tours were conducted on bus by two terrific bus teachers — Miss Kate Hathaway and Miss Kathy Oleson from St. Paul, Minnesota. The students stayed in Madrid for six days and experienced many things including a visit to the Royal Palace, a visit to the Tapestry Factory, a trip to the Prado Museum, meals in the Mesones, a bullfight, and browsing in the many interesting shops. In Segovia, the travelers saw a 2,000- year old aquaduct and bartered with the gypsies. They also saw the monument. Valley of the Fallen, built in memory of Franco and the Civil War soldiers. Toledo, the home of El Greco; Avila, the last wall-enclosed city in Spain; and Maria Luisa Park in Sevilla were visited and admired. Two days were spent in Salamanca. The students enjoyed touring the University of Salamanca, visiting the cathedrals, shopping, swimming, and eating a special dinner. In Caceres, Columbus’ tomb and the beautiful cathedral he was buried in were viewed. The travelers stayed in a hotel along the Mediterranean Coast in Malaga for four days. While there, they visited an Arab fortress, swam in the sea, and shopped. The Alhambra and Generalife and the tombs of the Catholic Kings were observed in Granada. Several students experienced the full-day excursion to Morocco in Tangier, Africa. Sights included snake charmers, the Casbah or Marketplace, a bellydancer, and camel rides. The charming village of Mijas was investigated and an evening Flamenco dance was seen as the last day of the trip was spent in Spain. The group left for the United States on June 24. They were anxious to return home but a little sad to leave the friends and country they had become accustomed to. ' — Kiret Row: M. Lindley, J. Wolf, K. Berg, B. Boyd, K. Riggan, L. DeBruyn. The 1982 summer season for the Colfax Tigerettes proved to be one of “ups and downs”. Although finishing the season with an 11-12 won-lost record, the Tigerettes were able to capture the Sectional Championship. The sectional tournament was also held in Colfax, a tribute to the fine softball complex that we have. Injuries played a key role in the summer season for Coach Darrell Lindsay’s Tigerettes. Jodi Warrick, Keslie Russell and Marlene Berg all missed parts of the season with in- juries. “Injuries are a part of the game”, indicated Coach Lindsay “and the fact that we were able to remain com- petitive during these, shows the fine team effort that all of our players gave.” At season’s end the Tigerettes received many post season awards. Senior Keslie Russell and junior Sara Davis were named first team All- Conference, while Jodi Warrick was named to the second unit. Miss Davis was named to the Central District first team for class 1A schools while Miss Russell and Miss Warrick were second -.earn picks. And finally at the state level Miss Russell was given Special Mention while Miss Davis and Miss Warrick received Honorable Mention. The Junior Varsity squad had a very fine summer campaign with a 9-3-1 record. The Colfax High School Baseball team finished second in the DMRC baseball standings this year. Having another fine year although not quite fine enough the Tigers finished at 11-3 in the conference behind Pleasantville who was 13-1. A very talented group of juniors and sophomores.along with seniors Tony Thompson and Bobby Nichols the team made a brilliant run for the title. Three-year letterman and captain Tony Thompson hit .344 and provided fine leadership while playing cen- terfield. Tony was all-conference first team as an outfielder. Brilliant, junior pitcher Jeff Borts led the team in wins with 9 while having a fine E.R.A. of 1.21 and also hit around .300 for the season. Jeff was all DMRC first team as a pitcher. Junior catcher Todd Brown also gained first team all-conference recognition at that position. Todd batted .358 and improved his throwing greatly. Paul Deaton, junior infielder, was the other all conference first team performer at an infield position. Junior first baseman Brian Smith earned 2nd team DMRC recognition while improving his hitting greatly and playing very steady in the infield. Sophomore, Brian Wilson was the final DMRC choice gaining honorable mention as an infielder. Brian can be a great one if he con- tinues to improve. Junior Kelly Warner, who played third base all season did a respectable job and with a lot of hard work could attain DMRC honors next year. Sophomore, Randy Mindham, a starter in left field and Jamie Lewis will be big factors on a DMRC championship as will Todd Wilson (infielder-outfielder), Brian Townsend (infielder) and outfielder, Todd Haack. Freshman Tim Wilson, could also be a vital factor in the 1983 season. Colfax finished 17-8 on the season with several close games included in the eight losses. Good pitching and strong defense were instrumental this year and with im- proved hitting in 1983 a DMRC title looks to be a possibility. © THE PRIDE Mr. Ed Ackerman: 1974; Vocational Mechanics. As during the summer season the Tigerettes started slowly, but continued to gain momentum as the season pro- gressed and rode a six game winning streak into Sectional Tournament play. The winning streak included winning the Colfax Fall Classic for the se- cond consecutive year. “We had a fine effort from our squad this fall,” stated Coach Lindsay. ‘‘Playing the rough schedule we had and playing only four of those seventeen games at home I felt our kids performed very well. 24 The junior varsity team end- ed the fall season with a 3-3 mark. This was the third annual campout for Science Club members. The past two years the Science Club has visited the Ledges State Park and Stephens State Forest. Fortunately, the weather was cooperative for the most part, and the club members enjoyed several ac- tivities including fishing, hiking, and star gazing. Other activities included chores at camp, setting up tents, cooking, collecting and cutting firewood, and just sitting around the evening campfire talking and roasting marshmallows. The following students participated in the cam- pout: David Hansen, Kim Clark. Winston Snyder. Chuck Beuhrer, Marty McLain. Deana Wright. Erin Ward. Kristi Van Ekeren, Amy Seieroe. Kim Muta. VICTORY IS IN THE At the beginning of the fall of 1982, there was a rock music group by the name of Sur- vivor that produced a hit song The Eye of the Tiger. The song described a tough, rugged fighter who had the determination and never- say-die attitude that helped him prevail as a winner. This was the theme song of the ’82 Tiger football team, and it signified what the Colfax team was all about. They played hard, they played with determination, and they were winners. Four times during the '82 season the Tigers battled back after being behind, to overcome their opponents, and take the eventual victory! It possibly was this desire to win, and determination to carry home the victory that led the team to a fine 8 win, 1 loss record. The games we played were harmless, skinned knees and bruises caused the tears Those times are lost forever and with them flew the years. We’ve finally made it through the storm Friends forever, tried and true, We’ll always cherish the memories. Though our time together is almost through The time we gave support or just smiled and needed smiles When a friend was down and hurting We went that extra mile. We’ll always have the good times When our hearts yearned to fly, Our spirits ever soaring seemed to reach the sky. The years have taught us much for now the games are real We’ve learned to play with fairness and the victory we now shall feel. The rain has fallen softly, and so onward may we go. May sunlight always find us to color our own rainbow. Jackie VanEkeren Can You Remember.. . Walk back to the day you started school, can you remember if you cried? Mom left you in a whole new world of learning, friends, and “Whys?” After that first year, you knew you were a pro, and now you keep on pushing, and grow and grow and grow. Through addition, subtraction, the alphabet, you think, How much farther can I get?” But years go on and you soon find out they keep feeding you more without a doubt. Next thing you know, you’re on the top, 6th grade’s done—we're movin’ on without a stop, Jr. High and changing scenes you're growing up—whatever that means. High school comes and you can see the end, things get harder and you rely on friends. You can find no time to get things done, just pass the class and have some fun. Graduation comes and now you're gone, do you really remember what went on? Think of those buildings in which you learned and the memories of each grade in turn. Save a spot in your heart for these two places, the buildings, the memories and faces. v Merri Chamberlin Scott R. Although the Tigers man- aged a fairly respectable season during '82-83, they had quite a struggle in doing so. The team suffered from in- juries as several key wrestlers missed part of the year. In ad- dition, the hard work and “real” dedication needed to produce a consistent “team ef- fort” was lacking during much of the season. Statistically, the team finish- ed 3-3 in the DMRC, 4-6 overall, but couldn't do better than a fifth place in tourna- ment action. Individually, six of the eleven regulars on varsi- ty posted winning records. The Tigers also had twelve finalists in various tournaments during the year. In addition, Marti McLain was designated “Most Improv- ed” Wrestler and Sean Callahan was named Outstan- ding Wrestler” for the season. Wipe that smirk from your face. Mr. Edgar. Ready? Set? GO! JV BOYS SINK VICTORIES J.V. BOYS SINK VICTORIES! Posting an 8-6 season record, the young Tigers played inconsistently all year, which is typical for a young squad. Starting off the season with an overtime victory against Bondurant- Farrar, the Tigers played exceptional- ly well for a first game, but lapses throughout the year led to inconsisten- cy. Leading scorers for the year were Jim Earles (fr.) with a 13.3 average, followed by Tim Forck (fr.) at 8.3, Brad Fox (fr.) at 7.5 and Sean Blue (fr.) at 7.4. Earles. Forck, Mike Wharff (so.) and Eric Soutter (so.) were the leading rebounders. Sean Blue provided much excitement being the leading 3-point shooter on the team, while freshman Brad Fox provided needed floor leader- ship. Tim Wilson, the best sophomore prospect, played in only two games for the fr.-soph. team as he was spending most of his time in varsity duties. Wilson averaged 27 points a game in the two games he played. Other people who showed some hope for the future were sophomores Rich Reed. Eric Gan- non and Jeff Berg. While the Carpenter brothers (Brad and Phil), Jobber Stoaks. Tim Titus. Rob Beeler and (Magic) Joey Meyers filled out the roster. BOYS J.V. BASKETBALL SQUAD First Row: E. Gannon. J. Berg. R. Reed. J. Brenda Perry and Kim Muta were very convincing in their roles as the head counselors of Camp Pocahontas. Bob Mann did a fine job as Adam Apple, worried head counselor at Camp John Smith, who con- nived to get his camp OK'd by the state inspector Hector Doyle played by Brian Townsend who convinced us he was a lst-class nerd Marti McLain impressed everyone with his role as Adam's temperamental side kick. Missy Buehrer drew the best laughs as Theodora, a compulsive eater. Freshman Darcy Collister showed her promising dramatic career as snobby Vivian and nobly took a cream pie in the face. Veteran actress, Michele Walters, displayed her ability well as European counselor Hildegard, who’s favorite line was ve jog. Kristi VanEkeren kept everyone wondering what was going on as she slithered under cots and sought places to hide throughout the play in her role as runaway, Kate. Senior Natalie Milbourn, finished her high school acting career up as lovely Linda Biddle. Mike Jones and Jim Sprouse kept everyone chuckling with their roles as Officer Dumm and Mr. Terwilliter. Pam Shepley ably played Nurse Smudge. Sean Callahan made his acting debut with his role as “Ivan the Terrible’’. Elmer and Cleopatra (Winston Snyder and Lois Oliver) were enjoyed by all as were Dixie and Clams (Leona McCuen and Sean Blue) who made “cute gangsters. Senior Joan Gannon did a fine job playing Mrs. Thislemist. Campers Christy Daft, Kelli Meckley, Nate Snyder, Justin Jenkins, and Sean Padgett added much to the scenes with their chatter and colorful summer clothes. Brenda Parvi and Brenda Hysell played Gloria and Jenny well and finished out the cast. Kamp COME SAIL Prom Servers: First Row: D. Wright, D. Rawlins. B. Edwards. B. VanZee. Second Row: M. McLain. T. The team will lose two seniors: Marlene Berg, who holds the school records in the 400-meter dash, the A00-meter hurdlers, the high jump, and in several relays, and Sara Davis, a strong addition to the team. The Colfax Boys' Track team had a very fine season, highlighted by team victories at the DMHC championships and the Newton Cardinal Relays. It had been since 1969 that the Colfax Boys had won either of those crowns. The Tigers finished first at four invita- tional meets and never finished below second at any regular season meet. While the boys were enjoying one of their most successful seasons in recent history, it could not have been done without the excellent team balance that was displayed throughout the year. Seniors Todd Brown. Jeff Borts. Mike Jones. Tom and Tim Schantz of- fered excellent team leadership throughout the year. Junior Todd Haack was the leading point earner during the season. While some scored more points than others, the 1983 season could not have been the success it was without the contributions made by everyone. Four school records were broken during the season. The team of Jeff Borts. Todd Wilson. Tom Schantz. Craig W'olf broke the school record in the 4 x 100 Relays with a time of 48.85. Todd Wilson. Brian Wilson. Craig Wolf. Todd Haack set the school record in the 4 x 200 M Relay at 1.35:0 seconds. Randy Mindham. Tim Pep- per, Jeff Borts. Todd Haack set the school record in the 4 x 400 M Relay time of 3:35.42 seconds. Tom Schantz set the school record in the 400 M Low Hurdles with a time of 57.24 seconds. To cup the season off. the Tigers qualified two people to the State track meet. She missed qualify- ing for the district meet by two shots. Jodi will be greatly missed next year. Senior, Joan Gannon, out for golf for her first year showed steady improvement the entire year. The two sophomore Beckys , (Boyd) and Edwards), both seemed to get better with every meet. The two freshmen on the team, Leslie Sufficool and Annette Warrick, are also going to be counted on next year. Sink Their Putts! First Row: S. Blue, B. Stoaks, B. Fox, M. Wade, R. Mann, K. Warner. Senior, Kelly Warner, had several low rounds and was medalist for Colfax in two meets. Freshmen Brad Carpen- ter, Phil Carpenter, and Sean Blue all played an important role in the Colfax success. Junior, Rick Mann, led the Tigers in one meet but missed several meets due to his job. Junior, Brian Townsend, could also make some waves if he would continue to practice steadily. Awards ’ The annual Awards’ Day is a time for faculty to express their pride in the achievements accomplished by the students. WITH CLASS COUNTY FAIR Colfax is a town of many facets. Although located near Des Moines. Colfax keeps its small town qualities with such things as the county fair. This annual event brings the whole county together with a kind of com- munity spirit that lasts throughout the year. It gives people a way to escape the everyday big city pressures and enjoy the simple life. This is an important part of Colfax. A FINAL TRIBUTE Kathryn Slatkoski came to Colfax to teach in the fall of 1942. She had just graduated from Parsons College in Fair- field, Iowa, with a degree in business education. What her students and fellow faculty members noticed immediately was her competence on the job and her friendliness toward everyone. With the exception of one year when she went to Ottumwa to teach and a brief period when she worked as a secretary at the Monroe Company, this was the beginning of a long teaching career at Colfax High School. Until her death September 13, 1982, she was head of the business education department and advisor to the high school annual staff. When it came to her students, Mrs. Slatkoski's main concern was that they attain a high degree of proficiency in the sub- jects which they took from her. As the years went by, she never lowered her standards, and she always felt a keen sense of responsibility for her students' performance as they moved out into the business world. Teachers who worked with Mrs. Slatkoski through the years loved her and respected her. They were aware of how conscien- tious she was about her teaching and how reliable she was in performing her extra duties. Yet, she was not all serious. She had a sense of humor that was unique; and when things got a trifle heavy, that humor popped out at the most unexpected times. She is missed by both the students and the faculty. And what can unanimously be said of her is that she was a “Profes- sional” in every sense of the word. It was a year to be proud of our school and everyone in it. A lot of people have worked hard to help you remember what a special time this was. We’d like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Mast and Mrs. Van Elsen for work above and beyond the call of duty. They put in a lot of ex- tra hours doing darkroom work and proof- reading. The staff deserves a lot of gratitude for putting up with our yelling, and working hard to make deadlines. A special thanks to our advertisers for supporting the annual in such difficult economic times. Thanks to their terrific support we were able to try some new things to make this book something we hope everyone is very proud of.
