HUDSON In the first home game of the season, Colfax was defeated by the Hudson Blue Raiders by a score of 12-6. BASKETBALL About twenty-five boys reported to Coach Ford for practice at the beginning of the season, after the first week, the squad was cut to fifteen. The squad opened the season with practice games at Prairie Farm and Boyceville, winning both easily. After these two games the Norgs won two conference tilts, the Hrs: from Ellsworth and the second from River Falls. Then came their first defeat at the hands of Menomonie, who won by a single point. Coming back after the Christmas holidays, the team seemed to have difficulty in getting into high gear, but did manage to edge out Spring Valley in the first game of the new year. Following this, the Norgs took a severe trouncing from Ellsworth, Colfax was definitely off form playing a very ragged, rough game. After this beating, the team came out of the slump to defeat Elk Mound in a non-con- ference tilt and go on to edge out New Richmond. At this period came a break in the regular routine which was hard for the team to become accustom- ed to. Mr. Ford took a job in the new Model High School in La Crosse, so Colfax had to get a new coach. The selection fell to Mr. McGuire, Stevens Point, who proved to be a most able replacementg however, the team lost a game to River Falls during the change of coaches. The team soon responded to the new tutorship and edged out Hudson by two points and New Rich- mond by one to take over second place in the conference standing. The Norgs then won another non-conference game by tipping Elk Mound in a double overtime. Next, the team overran Spring Valley forty-nine to hfteen. Now came a week of playing that brought disaster to the team. Games had been scheduled with Hudson and Menomonie for this week, and then came the announcement that Colfax had to play an elimination game with Mondovi in order to get into the tournament. The first game, with Hudson, was dropped by a narrow margin. The next night the team had to play Mondovi, but being tired from the Hudson game, they could not match the speed of Mondovi, so the tournament hopes of Colfax were lost. The last game of the season played at Menomonie was won by the Indians in an overtime. This left a season's record of eleven victories against six defeats. Next year the team will be weakened by the graduation of six seniors: Captain Jimmy Anderson, David Prince, Gene Link, Lawrence Erpenback, Dale O,Flanagan, and Malcolm Mickelson. Captain Anderson and Link, both reliable defense men, will be missed at the guard positions, Erpenbaclc, whose height enabled him to control rebounds, will be lacking at center, and Prince, O'Flanagan, and Mickel- son, fast and accurate ball handlers, will be gone from the forward positions. i401 I' 1 5 s I Ll Aniyrsgn, Ueel'4u.l:Hu 1 Aickelsom C ar-l-. BASEBALL The 1940 baseball season got under way about the middle of April, with quite a large squad reporting for practice. Most of the members of last year's team are back again this spring, so the prospects of a good team and a successful season are quite favorable. Games have been scheduled with Eau Claire, Bloomer, Menomonie, Spring Valley, Amery, Chippewa Falls, and New Auburn. Plans have also been made for a tournament to be held in Colfax with Amery, Chippewa Falls, New Auburn, and Colfax participating. BACK ROW-T. Teppen, E. Thompson, O. Mar- tinson, R. Stewart, R. Two games were played: one with the seniors, made up of fourteen of the lettermen, the other with Barron High School, April 30. The boys worked very hard to build a mighty team for the fall. There are eight lettermen who will be back next fall, namely: Virgil Martinson, Franlc Handorf, Billy Beckwith, Freddie Randall, Ervin Thompson, Grant Lynch, Roger Hones and Lloyd Hart. Other boys who appear promising this spring are Torgrim Teppen, Gordon Gilberts, Donald Peterson, Ralph Frisle, Orville Martinson, Donald Iverson, and Leighton Waterhouse. l43I BACK ROW-Anita Bronlcen, Elaine Anderson, Lucille Krause, Agnes johnson, Elaine Winger, Eldrid Madison, Carol Pietz, Alvina Frogner, Evelyn Christianson, Marion Prince, Miss Wangensteen, Coach. GIRLS' BASKETBALL On Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:15 girls can be seen hurrying towards the gym, for this is the period for girls' basketball. Bus students and others who are free at this time have an opportunity to partake in good healthful exercise in the form of strenuous basketball games. Sometimes juniors and seniors play against freshmen and sophomores, while other times town girls play the bus girls. Much enthusiasm and excitement are shown every Monday evening when town students play volley- ball and basketball with alumnae. After warmer weather comes, the interests change to lcittenball and tennis which continue until the end of the school term. KEY TO PAGE 24 KEY TO PAGE 45 1, 'Four daughters' 1. Little Miss Stone 2. The purpose of this organization is to give each member a chance to develop the ability to sight-read in four or eight part singing. In addition, each member is given an opportunity to develop a sense of appreciation of the best type of choral music. Election of officers took place at the beginning of the year. The following were elected: Elaine Winger, president, Elaine Anderson, vice president, Greta Toycen, secretary-treasurer, Warren Madison, sergeant- at-arms. One of the important features of the year was the purchase of new robes for the chorus. The work of preparing and selling the sandwiches and coffee was ably taken care of by com- mittees appointed for that purpose. The coffee and hot dogs were much in demand and greatly enjoyed by the spectators on chilly days. This venture proved to be quite successful financially. 1' ff 'l l54l FOOTBALL BACK ROW-Gregory, Israels, E. Peterson, C. To win a letter is the ambition of every athlete, not because of the letter itself, but because of what it means. There is one large club composed of all the girls who take home economics. The project of this group is the making of curtains for the music room. Due to the fact that the membership in the club is so large, smaller groups have been organized. The freshmen group has for a project the producing of a play for the style showg the sophomore group is making aprons to sellg the seniors are working on a handicraft project. The Home Economics III class will take a field trip to Minneapolis. The girls who are privileged to go on this trip are those who have shown three years of good work in the club. DECLAMATORY In our forensic activities, declamatory plays an important part. About forty students, coached by high school teachers, took part this year. Aiding the students to gain self-confidence and poise, forensics enables them to express their thoughts vividly and clearly. After the first elimination the following tool: part in the second contest: SERIOUS HUMOROUS Arlene Anderson Shirley Mae Bird Marcella Buchner Phyllis Grimsrud Ardys Olson Jack Koenig Leona Olson Rachel Noer Lloyd Prochnow Virginia O'Donnell Elaine Sparby Verna Peterson Joan Thompson Dorothy Pitzriclc Of these, eight were chosen for the final contest held on March 29. No picture: Byron Friberg. ORATORY Appropriateness was the outstanding feature for this year's orations. They ridiculed the dictators, the war, the munitions makers at the bottom of all wars, and they clearly brought out the blessings and privileges of the American citizen. The five who participated in the elimination contest were: Royce Rolstad, Leslie Nelson, Earl Rose- land, Arnold Gregerson, and Byron Friberg. The following two were chosen to compete in the finals: - Earl Roseland ---- The Cry of Youth Leslie Nelson - Hands ' TIME I waste my time, time never to be returnedg I say, What's the use of always being busy. It isn't worth whilef' Time slips by just as fast with nothing earned, nothing done, But yet when those last moments show what I could, have accom- plishecl, I bow my head in regret, that I, a poor mortal, was Ignorant to think He would give me those last moments again. Time well earned is time used for better purposes and accomplish- ments, If I were granted those lost moments again before I die, I'm sure they would be used unto the utmost of my labourg But still, who can say but what we poor mortals would Repeat the same thing over again, nothing accomplished, nothing clone. E651 S . P L A Y P F O I 0 S R H E661 THE POOR FISH The Poor Fish, a comedy in three acts, was present- ed by the senior class on February 16, at the auditorium and was very successful. Superstitious Sylvester Fish discovers that his wedding day is Friday, the thirteenth, and sends his prospective bride, Francine Payton, a note postponing the wedding. He and his best man, Aubrey Nutt, go to a mountain house, closed for many years, which has been promised to him by his uncle. He is amazed to find it occupied by Miss Florence Arlington, who has rented it from a real estate man and converted it into a rest cure sanitarium. Sue Bickford claims the house also. Francine, upset by Sylvester's note, drives into the mountains and has a breakdown near the sanitarium. She claims that Margaret Matters has been sent there by Sylvester, but he denies ever having seen her. His uncomfortable situation is intensified when an- other woman rushes in, throws her arms around him, and calls him her husband, and also by the arrival of Mrs. Sylvester Fish, who turns out to be the wife of Fish, Sr., his uncle. From then on, matters are hastily cleared 3 up for Sylvester, Jr., who has found a firm friend in Sue, while Francine has undergone a change of affec- tions, now preferring Aubrey Nutt. I On November 22, 1939, the annual school carnival was held in the high school. Because of its immensity, no- body even dared to estimate the number present but every- body agreed that it was perhaps the greatest number of human bodies ever squeezed into the Colfax High School. The grade show started off a hilarious evening. Aca- pacity crowd filled the gym to witness the presentation, The Story Book. The sophomores and juniors put on a comedy in the main room entitled The Hick Honeymoon. The seniors very ably presented Bachelor's Reveriesf' which was en- joyed by the large number of entertainment seekers who attended this show. Lunches were served in the home economics roomy pop, candy, and ice cream were sold in the mathematics room. It's a fact that all dusty tonsils and empty stomachs were taken care of. Miss Fritz's Kindergarten, written by freshman tal- ent, was presented twice during the evening. Its origin- ality was enjoyed by all. The last feature, a minstrel show given by the music department, topped off a grand evening. Five very lucky people went home with valuable prizes as a result of the raflies sponsored by the different classes. As midnight approached, the carnival came to an end, The activity fund of the high school was substantially boosted by the carnival which was made possible only by the hard work and fine cooperation by the faculty and students. i681 ANNUAL ST AFF June Hones, Editor-in-chief-Donald Olson, Assistant Mary Conway, Senior Editor--Anita Bronlcen, Business Editor-in-chief.
