The Value of an Education Although virtue receives some of its excellence from nature, yet it is perfected by education. EACH DAY IN HIGH SCHOOL IS WORTH 545.00. Could you drop out of school and secure a position paying 550 per day? Lack of interest or the attraction of earning money is the cause of many dropping out of school. During the rest of your lifetime you will earn 533,000 more than you would have earned. The earnings of a high school gradu- ate during an average lifetime is 578,000, while that of the person who quits school at the end of the eighth grade is only 545,000. 533,000 divided by 720, the number of days that you spend in school, will give a trifle more than 545 per day. If you go on to college you will be still farther benefited. The average earning of a college graduate is 5150,000, or about 5100 for every day spent in college. Thus it is clear that the farther you go up the educa- tional ladder, the more your school days are worth. Education certainly pays. Colfax High School offers every opportunity that is offered in any high school. The commercial department offers, to both boys and girls, such training as fits them to go into office work or some other line of business. Shorthand, typewriting, filing and bookkeeping are a few subjects of this department. Four years of English, which includes both literature and composition as is required by universities and colleges, are offered here. Then there is Latin for those who wish to secure a language credit before entering college. Two years of History and one year of Citizenship are also offered. Public speaking, declamatory work and dramarics offer new opportunities to many high school pupils who are interested in this line of work. Colfax has been a winner in both the league declamatory and oratorical contests for a number of years. In the lines of mathematics and science, Algebra, Geometry, General Science, Chemistry, Home Economics and Biology are offered. Music is not only a necessity, but a pleasure in education. During the Past year, in ad- dition to the regular subject which is offered in music, we have definite periods set aside in which all who have the interest and ability of learning any musical instrument are instructed. A band class also meets regularly every day. We need training physically as well as mentally, therefore physical education is a part of our schedule. Both girls and boys have basketball hours. Football is offered in the fall and baseball in the spring. Colfax has been a prominent participant in the River Falls tournament for the past two years. The agricultural course aids in solving farm problems, and it tends to interest one more in home work. Colfax ranks high in scholarship. For two years we have been the best spellers in Dunn County. We End the town library a great boon in helping the students to prepare their daily assignments. This library has been classed with Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls libraries by the state inspector.
