Cruising Down The R iver The ship of life ls selling on we must leave school alas! But we'1l always remember Pleasures of the past We little cared our freshmen year, But now we've passed that stage We know that we can conquer life, Or lt can make ue slaves Launched but not yet anchored, Is our motto one and all Striving we must, in God we trust, And try not to fall Ne're launching out together, But soon we'll break away, Each for his own harbor, Each one sailing where he may Sailing, sailing through the seas of life, We'll meet no more, Let each of us do all we can to better This old world for, We're launched in life together, But different seas we sail, Hiding waves and blllowe, And never shall we fall l ' a O We have a whole future before us. . . I, I I Class History A On September 3, 1946, fifty-seven prospecting Freshmen boarded the caravan blazing a trail towards the new frontier, Commencement. The wagon train elected Hrs. Buhl as teamster and the following pioneers were given stations: Duane Acker, Presldentg Kathleen Lewis, Vice-president, Jim Clarke, TreasurergLeona Todd, Secretary. One of our most frightening experiences was the Freshman initiation. We found that some of our class were very musically talented, and some looked wond- erful ln dlsgulse. The following pioneers left the caravan in fear of future perils. Richard Bolce, Hugh O'Del1, Don Wheeler, Barbara Brotherton, Norman Bently, Lorraine Yates, Raymond Wilkie, Donald Render, and Duane Acker. At last we had made the first quarter of the trip. We now were ln sight of the trail we must follow over the Sophomore Plains. We were Joined by the following pioneers: Faye Johnston, Jerry Jones,James McDonald, Ronald Porter, Della Ware, Bill Geeck and Dale Winter Starting on the new trail, we elected Mrs Cooley as our head driver The following people were given stations President, Lucille Paxton, Vice president, Dick McCoy, Secretary, Kathleen Lewis, Treasurer, Jim Clarke This Part of the Journey went smoothly A few of us were given the honor of serving at a get to gether of two caravans that were traveling ahead of ue On this part of the trip a few more pioneers became discouraged and turned back Arlene Marshall, Donna Saline, Ilton Thorne, Della Ware, Faye Johnston, Lorraine Yates, Harvllla Smith, Anita Bolce,Dor1s Curtis, Jack Huss,Jerry Jones, and Dessle Roberson Now we are going to cross the Junior Mountains, with Hr Long as our head teamster The following people were given stations Ruth Gordon, Presl dent, Joan Warner, Vice president, Lucille Paxton, Secretary, and Jim Clarke Treasurer The following people Joined us on our trlp across the mountains David Gross, Joyce Winn, William Arthur, Joan Hutchinson and Howard Griswold and Don O'Dell This year proved to be a great success We were given the opportunity of presenting to cur fellow pioneers and surrounding settlements a play called, 'Ky Hearts In High' In 'Apple Blossom Time' we honored the Caravan of 1948 at a banquet and dance We received many compliments on the orchestra we selected, also on the originality of the decorations With the help of our mothers, the dinner was areal success Activities of the year included a Penny Supper which proved very popular and helped our financial status We are now just a few sunsets from the land of Commencement As we sit in a circle around the campfire we think over our many hours of toll and pleasures we have enJoyed together For this last section of the trip we chose lr Nelson as head teamster The stations were fllled by Robert Ullom,Pres1dent,Joan Warner, Vice president, Joyce Winn, Secretary, Jim Clarke, Treasurer Colene Bloomqulst ls our new pioneer Our days are filled with prepara tion for our destination is drawing nearer The Pony Express has gathered our mall which consists of invitations to our friends and relatives In the month of October, we had our pictures taken by H A Powell, the traveling photographer The proofs were very satisfactory for most of us In December of 1948, we presented another stage production called 'The High School Mystery' land a real mystery too J The play proved very successful Other activities on our last year included also a play given at the college in Mt Pleasant, 'Rich Han, Poor Han' Our three plays were very ably directed by Hrs High To her we give credit for her never tiring efforts to aid us in all we undertook In March another Penny Supper was put on, along with various bake On the night of Hay 6, 1949, we were the honored guests of the members f the Junior Class at a banquet and dance Clayton Burns, D ean Thering and Eugene Rilett chose to depart from our car- avan durlng the last few short miles before we reached our destination T he journey has been successful, out numbering the hardships and our diffl cultles were the enJoyments we had of being together, to meet the goal of gradu ation We are now setting an even higher goal, to participate ln a much largerg caravan, where we are certain to have a 8360688 as we have at last reached the land of Commencement Forty two grateful senior graduates of Coleman High School I I O O . . . , - 0 O O I e 3 O 2 0 U 0 , S O 0 1 , 5 . . I ' ' E - Class Alphabet We're the class of 1949 Our class numbers 42 Without the aid of teachers and parents We never could have pulled through This poem ls called the alphabet We've worked with all our might To connect the letters with the names And make them sound all right To like this poem, we hope you'll tr When mistakes are noticed, just pass them by A is for Allison, Jerry we mean We know a girl who thinks he's real keen Also for Arthur whose troubles are famous With him ln our class lt takes patience to tame us B is for Badgley, of course, Bower too, To one another they'l1 always be true We mustn't forget Bloomqulst who is new here this year, And Burton whose voice we constantly hear Cadman and Chaffee, the next on the list Chupp, these three we would miss there ls Clarke, our Jokestsr, you know ln our class, Just hear us all crow Also for And then With him D stands for doubtful, which none of us are We know in this world we'll all go far E gives us Eagly, the next ln our class, With his cutting up, 1t's a wonder he passed This brings us to Farrlson a gal kind and true we'll look a long time to find another like you Which gives us exactly one fifth of twenty Griswold and Geeck are two of a kind, They never say much but have lots on their mind Gross ln our hero, captain of the team Everyone thinks he is really on the beam Can't forget Gordon, her hair is so red We wonder lf she's as nice as Kenneth has said We mustn't omlt H, of it we have three Without these classmates where would we be? Hall who ls tall and always ready to clown, His fooling in class has made all teachers frown Hopkins, who studies and seldom goes out, When test time comes 'round she'll know what 1t's about Last comes Hasenfratz who seems quite shy We wonder lf she stays so when out with a guy I for initiative which no '49' Senior lacks Going out ln the world, we'll be on the rlght tracks J ls for Justice, which we usually received, And when we dldn't we really were peevsd Keller and Kerr who both like to giggle Watch out now girls' It might keep you single' In writing of Knapp, we've not much to With his solemn thinking, while young, say he'11 turn L presents Lewis who here stands alone But she's not by herself when Gordon comes home A girl in our class whom we love and adore, But we know this guy loves her still more BPH? I Y, D 0 And now G is here, of these we have plenty, I D I , . I CLASS ALPHABET Cont'd. Here we write of Marshall, who is everybody's pal She's liked by all her classmates and ls an all around good gal. McCoy has many girl friends, kept ln a far away town. We don't see how he snags 'em, but he sure does get around. McDonald drives a shiny Dodge, in which he takes great pride. He says there is no certain girl to ride in it by his side. M also gives us a Senior fellow who likes to be real mean. It's Mester we're writing of, he's a certain Jun1or's dream. Of N's this class can boast of one, and this is Donald Nobbs. Everyone wonders if he has any heart throbs. O'Dell comes next in this alphabet of ours: If given a chance he has great mental powers. Paxton's no 'lone wolfu as we all can plainly see. When Vernell's around she is as busy as a bee. Instead of schoolwork he always comes first, Without him poor Lou's heart would probably burst. We mustn't forget Penney who tells many wild tales You can't find many that aren't about males. Porter and Potter whose names are often confusedg We know of many times when they were misused. Q is for Quality, no better can be found Our class is the best, and for higher places bound R for Render who used to skip school But having been caught, he now obeys this rule Then St John who is loved by a guy called Bob We wonder if housekeeping will be her steady Job Truthful for T which we've alw ys tried to be It has been a great help in reaching this destiny In writing of Ullom, we won't take long But without him ln our midst, we might have gone wrong An essential on the team, is Urbaniak we all agree Will they win games without him? We'll have to walt and see An now here is Vought What shall we say? h, we know He was the hero of our Senior Play An up comes W of which we have four We surely are grateful we haven't any more We'll start off with Warner who has had many a love affair She goes from one to another and doesn't seem to care Her opposite is Watson who doesn't date so much, She'd rather do more profitable things like studying and such We have a pretty and witty girl who goes by the name of Joyce We wonder who will change her name from Winn to their own choice Winter ls a quiet guy and better known as Dale, We know in all the things he does, he will never fail XY and Z will end our alphabet These letters we are going to use, all in a set 2 for Xcellent, Z for Zest, Y for Youth which we all loved the best We have written of each person within our class Here's hoping we've left out neither laddle nor lass bfi.-gil! d . o ---- . d . 4 uv. 1 6 li' 'I' e eg. wx' :EJ 1 . ,XXV Senior Prophecy Whlle ln Arabia, the last round-the-world trlp that we took, a very wlse gypsy presented us with a crystal ball. Oh yes! Now it is cloudlng up. We are wondering about the class of 1949, but everything ls still cloudy. Oh, we1l,the class was always ln a mist anyway. But walt, I think it will work. Yes! There ls a bright spot in the ball--in the form of He's really, in the carnival buslness now, rlght ln the cage of the top performers, those cute little beasts called monkeys. We knew lt would happen sooner or later. We can 't seem to move away from the carnival scene. Wonder why? Oh there's the answer. Qgggy ,Alllsgn's shyness must have disappeared because he's the huckster for the Chorus Cuties. Nlce work, lf you can get it. Now we seem to be circulating around a bit. This is really an odd scene. It looks like an operating room. Isn't that ' drawing pretty pictures for a handsome doctor? We knew she would be successful in art of some sort. But who is the patient? Why lt's Amy,Lgl1gg!l Are you finally 1 E f 51 ,. X . R1- 5-. w in -w :-I ,WZ 5 . 5:5 6 ' 6 ri ,. .1 2, getting y that head taken care of? Rather suspected you'd be in a straight Jacket by now. Pl We knew Keller would pick a handsome doctor. 2 Now the mist is appearing again. we are in a large city. Someone is doing QQ some modeling. It's Life must have gotten 'tedious' on the fsrm.iQ There is a name on the window of this modeling agency that appears to be -Dick ii ,!gQQy, He must have taken his 'corn' to the city, no demand for it in Coleman. ,A Now we are going out on Maine Street. It looks like 's small V town experience with selling fruit has helped him ln a big way. He is now head if of the U. S. Fruit Exchange, and by the way, the biggest supporter of the Night ,f Clubs here. As we gaze into the mist, a figure appears before us. Alas!! it is if R the multi-millionalress who made her fortune by her ideas on 3 stretching things to a world wide rubber band company. L Qon obbs seems to have done alright too. His name appears on the largest if of the Wall Street banks. The head cashier is none other than,Qh3gk-Hggjgg, tHe ?1 always did belong behind barsl. g 5 Now we are going in a larger section of town. An opera house comes into SQ view. The star of the nights performance ls none other than our own -Bgghggg- K -Wgjggg, As we go inside fat our own riskl we are shown to our seats by a pretty Qi strawberry blond who says her name used to be Her husband owns N' the opera house and she ls working part time as an usherette. As the time nears 1 for the opera to begin, out steps the thin, meek, little gentleman, Drlgghggg Q 233193, carrying supplies to the orchestra players. Among these we recognize if E.us9.s.9..39.naaz:. tenor ears L bass viol and piano-They 3' always did like to make a mess out of music. This scene fades from v1ew,but soon ,J another appears. We find ourselves on the green campus of Sweet Brlor College. Kd To our surprise we see as Professor of Chemistry. He informs us 55 that ls the president of a near-by reform school. Wonder if his ,t face still gets red everytime one looks at him? We also find out that J. Lggr ls the Dean of Women at Sweet Brlor. She must have changed quite a bit 5' through the years. Dgn-QLDg11,1s the publisher of the 'Wild Wooley West Pocket We Edition' books ln this same town. He did get something out of those westerns QQ after all. gi We seem to be peering into the country slde of life now. Farm life--that's I the thing. Well, there's upholding the song, 'Old McDonald had a f' Farm'. ere comes someone down the lane on a horse. did you fin- L ally take the hint and get rid of that Ford? Farther down the line someone fy seems to be working around chickens. The former I We wonder- gf ed why you saw 'The Egg and I' so many times. Someone strolling very slowly ,J around in the woods near by turns out to be . If she was an accl FQ dent going someplace to happen, there sure wouldn t be many accidents. Life on Eg the farm ls pretty popular among our old classmates is running a is turkey farm. Say El, do you have to shoot turkeys when they fall and break a Q1 leg? That means 'Turkey Every Sunday!. is in the scene too, as per WW usual, working mathematlc problems. he is counting all the turkey legs and dl- if viding by two to see how many turkeys there are. Leave lt up to him to flndthe Qi hardest way around a problem. ye Down the road and into another city we whirl. A hospital comes into view. 5. Head nurse is J We somehow thought she'd get into a eanitarium ,g but not as a nurse. n this same hospital is head of the E Cooking Department. KAnd they expect the patient to get better, too.7 gf Now we see three images appearing. One is strumming a guitar and all threegf are singing.
