I948 - HILLTOPPER - 1948 TO THE GRADUATES OF THE COLE TRADE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1948 You are about to receive the reward for the investment you have each made in yourselves. You have come to the end of an important stage in your education: that in itself is worthy of the warmest congratulations. Your education has been a preparation to fit each of you for your vocation as a member of society and as a citizen of your community, of your country, of the world. Your school has stressed those facts, those abilities, those attitudes that have to be developed in order to make each of you effective citizens. You have been taught the lessons of life itself to better equip you to step forward into a world still fever- ishly groping for the ways and means of a lasting peace: to respect the worth of the individual, to work together for common purposes, to apply an intelligent method in the solution of the difficulties that must be faced in living together, to control our increasing scientific and mechanical inventions and discover- ies only for the welfare of mankind. Your next step is to assume your respective places in your community according to your chosen fields of endeavor. Your community now expects a return from the investment it has made in each of you in providing you with the facilities to acquire the training of your choice. You will continue to illustrate the principles of good workmanship and of good design in every aspect of your lives. Be proud of your achievement: it was Gladstone who said, Technical education is the exaltation of manual labour, bringing it up to the highest excellence of which it is susceptible. Your school is proud to have participated in your formationg and, in so far as you carry out those aims and purposes of the school itself, so too your community will be proud of you. WILLIAM L.
