OOLDWATER HIGH 1946 FOOTBALL SEASON Coldwater 0 Fort Wayne Central Catholic For the second straight year the Cavaliers lost to a strong Central Catholic team by the identical score of 12 O Fort layne's big tough line and hard running backfield proved a combination hard to combat Bob lanney, Ccldwater's fullback, sprained his ankle on the opening kick off and was of no use the rest of the evening Coldwater 3 Portland 12 The Cavaliers experimented with a new backfield in this game and the expert ment almosf proved disastrous Kanney was still injured and failed to dress Portland completed two passes for touchdowns 'Ab' scored on a fifty yard run and still later on a goal line pass 'Eddie' Giere saved the day by kicking the extra poin Coldwater 6 St Marys 13 Fumbles and poor defensive play handed this game to the Rough Riders Ab Buening tossed one pass for a touchdown and against a weak Bt Marys' pass defense, might have tossed more The habit of handing the ball to the Rough Riders via the fumble route deep in Cavalier territory was too much of a handicap to overcome Kanney still operated on a wobbly ankle Coldwater 9 Lima Shawnee 14 The Cavaliers oouldn't get going in this game and went in at the half, down After a little elocution, they poured over two touchdowns in the third quarter to lead 19 7 A pass in the flat in the final period intercepted by Shawnee for a touchdown made a close ball game out of a comparatively easy victory Coldwater 8 Paulding 13 Coldwater lost the Little Buckeye Conference trophy to Paulding in this game This contest definitely belonged to the Cavaliers as they outgained the Tigers made 12 first downs to 9 and generally were a better ball club However four passing attack combined to defeat the local lads Coldwater 20 Rockford O Rockford's lone effort to score occurred in the second quarter after Cold water had dominated play in the first period However, the Cavaliers' efforts were nullified by fumbles The second half saw the tide definitely turn in favor of the Cavaliers as they ran at will through a badly beaten Rockford line Cold water and Rockford each had one leg on the new Coldwater Rockford trophy Coldwater 5 B John O St John helped celebrate New Idea light and proved tc be a stubborn oppo- nent while doing it The locals had their minds on the work a week hence and fail ed to show impressively Everyone but the water boy saw action in the final stanza with St John having the ball on the Cavalier five yard line as the game ended The reserves, however, managed to score a last period touchdown against St John's best Straight football prevailed Coldwater 12 Celina 7 This game highlighted the season for the Cavaliers Icrtunately into the game the underdogs, but the manner in which they proceeded Cel1na's five man line certainly gave the lie to that thought Coldwater each of the first two quarters on goal line plunges by Buckley but convert in each instance Celina scored in the final stanza on a thirty TDBY went to riddle scored in failed to five yard only note Pass To show how completely the Cavaliers dominated the play one need that Coldwater ran 53 offensive plays from scrimmage as compared to Cel The football used in the game now resides in the Coldwater trophy case lD8'8 22 Coldwater 7 Versailles 3 Fumbl s again cost the Cavaliers in this game Versailles proved to be a hard running cltfit that capitalised on every break Two fumbles in the first half led directly to two Versailles touchdowns and Coldwater went in at the half, down 13 O The second half Coldwater completely ran the show but one touchdown was all that was forthcoming Bob Kanney's appendix kept him sidelined - - 12 - 1 - - . - .
