Activities outside the classroom would improve the student-teacher relationship such as Faculty-Varsity athletic events.” Irene Grimes Bill Johnson Seeing kids accused of something they are trying is amusing at times.” “More spirit at C.H.S. is needed. For the second year in a row, CHS experienced the thrill of Spirit Week. Monday, February 23 started the festivities with Clash Day. Everything from plaids and stripes to a variety of colored polka dots was seen. Tuesday was a rare occasion — Dress-Up day, which was followed by Wednesday’s successful Western Day. Teachers as well as students par- ticipated in T-Shirt Day on Thursday, and Friday ended this spectacular week with Red and White day, Hat Day, Albion exchange, and the Miss Twin Valley Contest. The judges had a difficult time judging the eight beauties entered in the pageant, but Miss Coldwater reigned victorious in the end. The Albion- Coldwater Basketball Game was the finale for an exciting Friday, and even though we lost the game, we didn’t lose our spirit. Spirit Week” is certainly looking at a successful future here at CHS! 43 Graduation . .. Led by a strong line and talented backs, C.H.S. gained the reputation as a team not to be overlooked. One game that stood out as the team’s best performance was the Hastings game. The “Big Red” utilized a ground control of- fense to conquer the Saxons. Evident from the hard work as the year wore on was the rapid progression in improvement as a team. Eight players receiving All-Conference recognition were: Shannon McCavit, Neal Newton, Lynn Lyman, Scott Senese, Chuck Neutz, Shaun McCavit, Mike Welke and Jo Wilkins. 1. Stahly, Coach Shook. This year’s Jayvees were talented and determined. When questioned on the year's highlights, Coach Sweitzer replied, the Dowagiac game, it was the first game of the season. We were down by 20 points and then we came back!” Another all-out team effort was against Harper Creek. Harper had beaten Coldwater the year before. Standout performances were recorded by Mike Stahly, who rushed for 261 against Hastings, and Lance Marteen, who completed 11 22 against the Saxons and passed for 5 touchdowns on the year. On defense, Adam Smith averaged 9.4 tackles a game. Sweitzer also recognized: Kip Albright, Jeff Rubley, Craig Simmerman, and John Smith for their offensive contributions. The Jayvees were led by team cap- tains Adam Smith and Mike Stahly. Coach Sweitzer commented on the future class as having a lack of size, but not ability. With this group of athletes, the football program looks to be in a positive swing toward the future! ri J.V. FOOTBALL ROW I. G. Pothoof, D. J. Miller, L. Marteen, B. Crotty, S. Wendorf, L. Hill, B. When asked about his '80-81 team last year, Coach Bilsborrow was optimistic. This year's milestones prove his optimism well-founded. On Sept. 26, 1980, Coldwater played host to Branch County's first cross-country championship meet. Besides winning the team title, Bret Norton ran a school record time of 16:32.7 for CHS. He became the first Branch County cross-country Champ. Other track honors were: Team Runner-up honors at the Union City Invitational as well as win- ning the Junior Class division Championship. Personal bests were experienced by Nate Walker and Ron Bercaw; they ran under the 18:00 minute mark on the home course. Bret Norton made first-team All-Conference. C.H.S. hasn't had a runner with this honor since 1973. The team was made up of only 3 Seniors: Barry York, Brent Yager, and Marshall Stine. The Co- Captains Bret Norton and Ron Bercaw will be back next year to lead the tracksters. If next year's team is anything compared to this fall's team, C.H.S. has a lot to look forward to! C.H.S. Two of the teams C.H.S. competed against played in the Class A and C State Finals. Although the girls were not always victorious, some games stood out from others: the first win over Sturgis, the second win over Albion and the loss to Marshall in the Districts. While there were no major team milestones reached, individual goals were accomplished. Senior Co-captains Cathy Page and Karla Harding were named All-Conference, and First Team All-Area. Page led the conference in free throw percentage, finished second in the area in scoring and was voted Most Valuable and Best Offensive” player. Harding finished eighth in the area in scoring, led the team in field goal percentage and was voted Best Defensive player. There were four seniors and nine underclassmen on the 1980-81 team. Coach Fuller stressed the importance of hard work and the desire to excel. With this in mind, the program looks promising for next fall. They finish- ed the season in 2nd place behind Sturgis, the league champs. Seniors Matt Waterbury and Darrell Graver made All- Conference. This is a great honor since only five members are picked out of eight teams. This was Matt's 2nd year on the All-Conference team. Matt averaged 4.33 per hole in T-V play, while Darrell averaged 5.33. The Varsity team was made up of three seniors and two juniors. With three seniors graduating, the underclassmen have a lot to make up for next fall, but should be able to rise to the occasion. Several things were accomplished during his first year. Three players received All-Conference honors: Karla Harding, first team; Denise Orris and Lisa Kellogg. Honorable Mention. Co-captains Harding and Orris were also honored by being picked All-Tourney in the season. Several underclassmen who proved irreplaceable were Vicki Wagoner. Kathi Miller, and Amy Ewers. Without any Juniors or Seniors the future looks even brighter! The future looks especially bright for Sophomore sensation Becky Howe. Becky’s second varsity season saw her extend her dual meet All-Around unbeaten streak and she managed to be beaten in only two individual events all year! Her school record 9.2 on Bars in the state meet helped her in winning Fourth All-Around in the state. At Regionals she was devastating coming in First out of eighty girls! Becky's finest achievement to date though is her 1981 appointment to the United States All-American Gymnastics team! She is the first Coldwater athlete to be given such an honor! Becky was not the only dimension however to a well balanced team coached by Chuck Beatty. One of the other stand- outs on his squad was Julia Stroble whose unfortunate injury towards the end of the season was not enough to overshadow her great season. Another asset was Freshman Kim Grady whose enthusiasm alone was a big help to all the girls let alone her consistent high scores in all the events! Angela Van Buskirk and Diane Brannon along with all the other team members also did a tremendous job for Coach Beatty and Coldwater High School. We will all look forward to seeing them return wearing the Cardinal winning attitude. Varsity Baseball: every time at bat, hits home with us! ROW I: Rob Hoard, Lance Marteen, Joe Dieter, Jon Stephenson, Jim Ewers, Dave Newhard, Steve Godfrey, Coach Pat Lowe. ROW II: Coach Doug Johnson, Rob Shook, Jim Miller, Derek Rohloff, Mike Murdock, Barry York, Rich Hruska, Curt Leohr, Lynn Lyman. The Baseball team started out the season right by taking spring training at Myrtle Beach in North Carolina. Besides meeting America's southern beauties, the team managed to get ready for the upcoming season. Seniors Rob Shook. Curt Loehr. Jim Ewers. Barry York, Lynn Lyman, and Jim Miller saw action for the last time in C.H.S. uniforms. Coach Lowe and Assistant Coach Johnson received talented ef- forts from several underclassmen. Lance Marteen a freshman, pit- ched for experience. Rich Hruska provided hits when needed, and Brian Yope and Rob Hoard also contributed. Rob Shook was a unanimous selection as an All-Conference 1st Baseman, batting .437 with 6 home runs and 36 RBI's. Lynn Lyman, a gloveman at short, was also named all Twin Valley along with Rob Hoard. Lyman batted .301 with 1 home run and 10 doubles. Hoard was named all Twin Valley as an outfielder, but saw some mound duty as well. Curt Loehr made Honorable Men- tion with his scrappy play as catcher. A special thanks and farewell goes to Coach Lowe as this is the last year he will don the red and white, ending a long and successful career at the helm of the Cards. 95 96 97 ROW I: Chris Donbrock, Randy Burke, Brien Kelly, Marc Siler, Tom Hartnagel, Jack Sheppard, Nick Krzeminski, Derek Graver, Pat George. ROW 3: Coach Mullaly, Joanna Bartlett, Julie Bettinger, Kim Eberts, Christy Hobart, Amy Vandewalker. 1981 proved to be an exciting year for Coaches Lopez and Mullally. They saw four school records fall, an improved team standing and several CHS tracksters at the top of the local honor roll. Senior Cathy Page broke her own school record in the 400m, running to a first place finish at the conference meet. Otsego transfer Kathi Miller, broke both hurdling records within three days. Lisa Kellogg started out her track season breaking her long jump record leaping a sensational 16'9.5 , almost 3 inches bet- ter than her old record. As a team the spirit was tremendous, with dedication and desire surpassing the usual standard. The team received further honor by placing two girls on the Battle Creek Enquirer Track Honor Roll. Because Page and Miller were listed in the top six in their events, they were invited to the annual Battle Creek En- quirer Area Best Meet. With Cheryl Paul coming back to lead the distance runners, the future looks promising for the Red and White. 100 101 Boys Track: on the run again! ROW I: C. Daniels, G. Herlam, J. Puorro, B. He was faced with a shortage of sprinters, but this did not hamper the overall standing of the team. Chuck Neutz continued his dominance in the pole vault. Chuck was the only Cardinal trackster to qualify for the State Meet at Regionals. He placed second after experien- cing an accident on an attempted vault. Bret Norton picked up valuable points throughout the season and missed breaking the mile record by .2 seconds. Bret finished second in the conference mile. Chris Newman, a senior quarter miler, finished the season with conference honors while he captured second place. He ran a 51.7 for a personal career best. Chris rated first in the All-Area Honor Roll as did Neutz and Norton. Rick Rurka, Mark Whitesides, Eric Yearling, Kelly Boothby, Josh Spaulding were Seniors with Rurka and Whitesides dominating the Area Long Jump and High Hurdles respectively. With several underclassmen returning in events such as the shot put, discus, 440m, and distance events, Coach Bilsborrow has much to look forward to. 102 103 ROW I: Brian Hodson, Sonjay Reddy, Ted Douglas, Dave Youtsey, Chris Watson, Bill Paarlberg, Kurt Piter. The Varsity Club at CHS functions to promote athletics in any way it can. Over the years the group has raised money to provide scoreboards, wrestling mats, hurdles for the track teams, and other items of equipment that the school board or the athletic department could not afford to purchase. In addition, the C-Club provides scholarships to two of its members annually in the amount of approximately $250.00 per recipient. Over the past five years, several of our graduates have benefited from this endeavor. For the individal member, the club provides the opportunity to work together with others who share his or her love of sports to promote the general welfare of athletics here at CHS. The members also enjoy activities such as lock-ins at the Battle Creek Y Center, swimming parties, and an annual picnic at the end of each school year. Furthermore, the experience the leaders and members gain in conducting their business meetings through adherence to Roberts’ Rules of Order carries over into their later life, when they serve as committee chairmen or members of various organizations where order and direction is needed to accomplish some task. Most of all, the Varsity C-Club members develop friendships with each other that they might not otherwise be able to share, had they not all come together in the club. It has been a part of the history of CHS and the community for the past 44 years. Yet, those staff members who have worked long hours after school, learning the process of designing a book to preserve each function, each class, each moment as it became a memory, are to be given special credit. The 1981 CARDINAL was produced by the following staff members, without whose outstanding work and dedication, no book would have been possible: Editor — Scott Tyson Assistant Editor — Mindy Steider Business Manager and Photographer — Michele Simmerman Advertising Coordinators — Gerald Rubley, Mindy Steider and Jamie Walkup Photography Staff — Jon Hart, Kris Kennedy and Julie Post Art Department — Bob Henning and Kris Kennedy Departmental Personnel — Liz Brown, Dawn Chesher, Kathy Clark, Kim Dearing, Kristie Denbrock, Anita Gentry, Tim Gibbs, Cathy Page, Cheryl Paul, Pam Philbrick, Aileen Ross, Jim Rzepka and Brenda Stine. You just call out my name and soon I will be there cause you know wherever I am I'll come running, to see you again. Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall all you have to do is call and I'll be there, You've got a friend! If the sky above you grows dark and full of clouds and that old north wind begins to blow, keep your head together, and call my name out loud, soon you'll hear me knocking at your door. Now ain’t it good to know that you've got a friend when people can be so cold, they'll hurt you and desert you and take your soul if you let them, Oh, but don't you let them! You’ve got a friend ... Thank you, Geddy Lee and Carole King. To the Class of '81 “We've Only Just Begun June 11, 1981 Why try, I know why this feeling inside me says it’s time I was gone. Clear head, new life ahead I want to be King now not just one more pawn! Fly by night away from here change my life again. Fly by night, Good-bye my dear Our ship has just come in and it’s time to begin!!! Moon rise and thoughtful eyes staring out at me from the world outside. No fright or hindsight I’m leaving behind that empty feeling inside. Start a new chapter to find what I’m after, it’s changing every day. The changing of seasons is enough of a reason To want to get away! It’ll be quiet and pensive With my thoughts apprehensive The hours will drift away. I’m leaving my homeland, Playing a lonehand OUR LIVES BEGAN TODAY!!! 178 You have almost reached the end of your 1981 CARDINAL, a book of which we, the staff, are very proud, and a book we hope you have enjoyed as thoroughly as we enjoyed designing it. Two things must be present in order to continue producing a yearbook each year: subscribers and advertisers. These are Coldwater High's sole sources of funding and must be sought prior to the completion of each book. Although we are in- debted to all who supported us in the production of this book, we wish to add a special thank-you to those of you who pur- chased a copy on faith alone. We realize that $13.00 in any economy is precious and we hope that you have found this a worthwhile investment, one which will appreciate in value and one which you will treasure in the years to come. We also wish to give special thanks to our advertisers. Their moral and financial support provided the basis of this book. Again, we realize that the state of the economy played an integral part for the advertising community in deciding what size ad to purchase, and indeed, whether to purchase one at all. Advertising in a yearbook is, we believe, a viable medium. We hope, as you have persued this book, that you have taken the time to study the Advertising Section. In it, you will find businesses offering a variety of services and items for sale. Our business community takes pride in its merchandise and service, and we take pride in them. In addition to their financial support, the advertisers deserve an extra thank-you from those of us concerned with the development of young people. It can be unnerving to solicit advertising if one has never attempted it. Your acceptance of those staff members in your place of business and your mature example in dealing with them, one-to-one, is appreciated and has shown them alternative ways of handling situations in the adult” world. Thank you for supporting your 1981 CARDINAL. We hope we may continue to serve you in 1982. THE SENIOR CLASS 1981 181 CLOSING 182 Another year is at an end, with new roads to travel, unseen horizons to explore.. May the journey into your future be filled with hope; May your every dream be fulfilled. The CARDINAL yearbook staff wishes to express its gratitude to ail those who contributed their time, effort, artwork photography, advertising and advice to help us produce the 1981 CARDINAL, a book of which we are extremely proud. Some of those to whom we are deeply indebted: Bob Conway and staff of Skylight Studio; Lee Zimmerman, Taylor Publishing Company, Dallas, Texas; Richard Fostei Craig Gunn; Advertisers; high school faculty and staff; students; community members; 1981 CARDINAL staff. 184 Diane M.
