SENIORS BUSY YEAR SEEMS VERY SHORT For the past four years, the Class of 6o has been working to attain the title seniors Now that they have reached their goal, they can look back on four exciting but busy years of school life, Revenue to finance such things as the senior trip and the memorial chiefly came from paper drives, leaf-rakes, spon- soring Friday Night dances, and the concession stand. A new spring project was taken into effect in the spring of 1959 when Val Hawkins came up with the idea of a car- nival. This year, Roger Mathews, president, also put this idea into effect. On March 19, the seniors enjoyed a week's trip to New Yorlg and Washington, D. C. This class is the first group to complete their four years of high school in the new building. Four after game dances provided a substantial amount of funds, and paper drives on Saturdays also helped. Other proj- ects included a booth in the Carnival, the annual junior play, and a WOWO record hop. Various other projects, however, depleted the treasury. In the spring, the juniors furnished the Junior-Senior Banquet and the Junior-Senior Prom. Class Advisors Mrs. Josephine Burandt ancl Mr. Bert- rand Sibley. pd-D 473 A... Under the direction of Mrs. Anne Trebilcock and Gerhard Carlson, the class sponsored several evening events. Included in this list were many Friday night hops. One of the most memorable events was the Remember When dance which they held after one of the basketball games. The main objective of the event was to present the top fifty records for the year of 1959. In order to enlarge the class treasury, sopho- mores paid dues of 50 cents at the end of each semester. Class members also participated in the annual carnival. Aside from adjusting to the fast pace of curriculum, they have acquired many memorable experiences in extracurric- ular activities. One of the first projects which they attempted was a Halloween float for the parade. Students dis- covered that working together is a barrel-of-fun even though it is a great deal of work. Although this class is lucky by being financially well-off, they did sponsor a few fund-raising drives. One of the first was the Freshman dance. Perhaps, above all other achievements, the Fresh- men are proudest of their victory over the Seniors in the T.B. Drive this year. They managed to outwit the Seniors in competition to raise money. Class Advisors Mrs. Anne Hayes and Coach David St. Aubin discuss dates for a class dance. Helping Ken, were Mary jane Nichols, clerk, and eight commissioners. This year the commission sponsored a student government day for the first time. Among other activities the commission checked lockers, issued parking stickers, and sponsored a WOWO Record Hop. They also entered a float in the Halloween Parade. As usual, a handhook was printed to be given to each student on the first day of school. They also revised the constitution of Coldwater High School. A new project for the commission was a laminating machine. This was a money-making project. Jane Nich- 63 Editor Gordon, Hinckley Hustle! Hustle! Hustle! Out of Breath? And so little time! Cardinal Staff members could be seen running back and forth in an attempt to meet page deadlines. This was the scene during the months of December, January, and February in the library workroom of Mrs. Della Mitchell. After moving from the English Department into their new quarters, the staff, under the editorship of Gordon Hinckley, dug into the long hard task of putting together a yearbook by a new and different method. A realm of activity' from dawn 'till dark was chosen by the group as the theme of the book - as the staff soon learned that there is always something going on at the high school be it day or dark. Under editor Ann Dally and assistant edi- tor Joyce Noblit, a new system was brought into effect. The paper was issued every other week and concentrated on feature stories, good pictures, and attractive style. A sports personality feature also added color to the page. To inform the student body of Coldwater High School concerning school and local events has been one of the main objectives of The Mirror staff. As in the past, the staff continued to compile the issues them- selves, sixteen times during the year, doing all but the actual press printing. Page editors met bi-weekly to design page layout and plan the stories. Stories of a specific number of words were then assigned to the various re- porters. The paper was financed entirely by group dues payments. In the past, editors were selected from journalism classes. During second semester, however, Geva Burkovskis served as editor while the journalism class members alternated as assistant editor. Geva Burkovskis, Sharon Carver, and Sharon Fuller, editors of The Mir- ror, and Mrs. Nancy Goodreau discuss page layout and style for an issue of the school paper. To play chess and learn more about the skills of the game has been the ultimate goal of the members of the Chess Club. Organized by Mr. Carlson this past year, the club offered an opportunity for chess fans to meet others interested in the hobby. The organization alternated its evening and afternoon games having one of each every other week. Members participated in a tournament within the club to determine the most skillful player. The opponents were paired in twos, and played two out of three games. Winners then competed against themselves until all but one was eliminated. This competitor received the honor of champion. Although the club offered new horizons for chess enthusiasts, it made no attempt to function as a typical high school organization. CHESS ENTHUSIASTS INAUGURATE NEW CLUB SEATED: S. Herman, L. After the exciting, yet heart-breaking game, Dorothy and her court reigned over the homecoming dance. The decorations were few due to the new fire laws. However, the queen and court were seated on the decorated stage where their chairs were elaborately decorated and surrounded with palms. This question was answered in the junior play under the direction of Miss Phyllis Coscarelly and student director Sue Castleberry. Cecil B. Gilford's mystery-comedy entitled Whodunnit was presented by the juniors on March 31 and April 1. The murder mystery evolved around Alexander Arlington, a famous, aging, well-to-do suspense writer, played by john Long. Alex finds himself in Heaven at the start of the production and discovers that he has been stabbed in the back. Well, being a mystery writer, he insists that he must know who murdered him or he'll never be happy in Heaven. Michael the archangel, portrayed by Greg Miller, assisted by two angels, Muriel and Isabelle, characterized by Bonnie Paddock and Judy From respectively, decides to let the miserable mortal man relive his last day on earth to discover his murderer. , Returning to civilization, Alex has one advantage, foresight. Trying to uncover a clue which would lead to the knowledge of his assailant, the author discovers everyone except Annie his housekeeper, played by Marcia Bailey. Through a conversation with gangster's moll Flo Baker, Janice Berry in disguise, Alex is confronted with the fact that his nephew Andrew, played by Ted Tompkins owes a huge gambling debt and could use the money he would receive as an only living relative. Former criminal Harry, now a gardener for the author, was the role of Bob Long. Harry is afraid Alex will squeal. Miss jenkins, the secretary, played by Sandy Graham, wants Alex out of the way so she can continue to write books under his pen name. Finally, his fiancee Vivian-twice his junior-played by Geva Burkovskis and athlete George Brewster, the role of Mike Brayton, wish to see the writer dead to inherit half of his money which he left to his future wife. Unfortunately though, Alex is murdered again in the same fashion as before and is still unaware of his murderer until the archangel 'enlightens him. ii N Y. 3552 Sr Q H gi x il l' 1' el-1, Sz . wwf, ll l 5 auxin 5? CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM FIRST IN RACES BUT LOSES MEETS arrier Craig Curtiss takes second place in state. IIO Although Coach Mitchell's cross country squad managed to take first place in every event, they failed to come up with a team victory. Runner Craig Curtiss sparked the team by placing in the number one spot of all regular meets. Running with teammate Jim Green- ich in the regionals held at Lansing, Curtiss placed second out of 120 runners while Greenich took the 30 spot. Later Curtiss repeated his performance by taking second in the state meet. SCHEDULE Coldwater at Charlotte Coldwater at Camden Coldwater at Adrian ATHLETIC DIRECTOR COMPLETES 17th YEAR Athletic Director Floyd Eby has this year complet- ed his 17th season at Coldwater High School. Now coaching the varsity basketball team, he first came as athletic director, football, basketball, and baseball coach. As a teenager, he graduated from Constantine High School and attended Michigan State, Harvard Uni- versity, and Princeton for his degrees. During his coaching career at CHS, Coach Eby has had one championship football team, two baseball championships, two state basketball championships, and many league, regional and district basketball championships. 1 Coach Floyd Eby MEET THE BASKETBALL STAFF l GLEN? Finishing a 16 game season with only 5 losses, Coldwater Varsity Cagers finished the best season in years with a 9-5 record in conference games. Coldwater lost its first ball game to a sharp-shooting East Lansing team on our home court. Winning the next four in a row, Coldwater was finally upset by the fired-up Adrian team. The team went on to win a three-way tie for second place in the Twin Valley League. Perhaps at no time in the history of Michigan basketball has a team lost so many games by such big margins as Coldwater did last year, and yet come back to a winning season the next year. With hopes hinging on five returning lettermen, three of whom are in the starting five, Coach Eby can hope for a winning season again next year. Final league statistics revealed Ron Paradine as top re- bound man with a total of 209 rebounds. Tom Smith lead in total assists with 84 to his credit. Downs, Coach Frank Lowe Under the expert coaching of Pat Lowe, the varsity team made an excellent record for Coldwater High. Eight varsity lettermen plus one varsity transfer student returned this year to form a good nucleus. Last year's men carried a 11-4 record and were second in the Twin Valley League with a 5-2 record. Most of the boys were members of the summer Connie Mack team which won the Michigan State Connie Mack Championship with 23 con- secutive victories. The team this year played the longest schedule in the history of the school consisting of approximately 22 games. One of the highlights of the baseball seas-on was a three-day trip to Kalamazoo dur- ing spring vacation in which the team played five games with other schools in the Kala- mazoo area. The pitching staff was built around three-year letter winner Bruce Buys. His record last year was 8 wins 2 losses. The pitching staff will include seniors Gordon Archer, Ben Henson, Duane Belote, a south-paw junior, and sophomore Danny Speaker. Lead- ing hitters of the team were catcher Tom Smith, a three-year veteran, infielders Ron Paradine and Glen Pearce, and outfielder Roger Mathews. FIRST ROW: D. johnson, R. Barnes, T. Fisk, R.
