One of the highlights of the year for the Future Nurses Club was the Halloween Pa- rade when the girls copped first prize for their float. The Commission and Cardinal Serv- ice Club followed close behind, taking second and third spots, respectively. Club meetings took up many nights of the year. All organizations met fairly regularly either for a business meeting or to listen to some educational program. Square dancing was prevalent at most of the special dances, besides the formal ones, and almost everyone attending took a whirl at the curtsying and skipping. BYRON THOMAS Superintendent School Leaders lla Three men, assisted by the board of educa- tion, have the responsibility of seeing that CHS operates smoothly. Superintendent E. Byron Thomas, with 10 years as administrative leader, was high school principal for four years here after com- ing trom Vicksburg, Michigan. He holds an BA from Albion College and an MA from Northwestern. Axner Olson, appointed business manager last year, has been in the Coldwater system for 14 years. Prior to his present position he was junior high principal. His degrees include a BA and an MA from Western Michigan. Since l948, Kermit Dennis has served as CHS principal, advancing from the iunior high principalship, Adrian was his college for an AB, and he received his MA from University of Michigan. ir Page 'IS KERMIT DENNIS AXNER OLSON Principal Business Manager t Work . . . Add Inlprovements The Coldwater Board of Education, consist- ing of Dr. Harold Weidner, president, Dr. Albert Long, vice-president, Edward Holtz, secretary, James Snyder, treasurer, and the trustees, Marriette Mooi, Dr. James Nash and Charles Kingsley, has added several improve- ments to the school system of the city during i957-58. Their main problem has been getting enough money to cover school expenses. After shifting their budget around several times, the board managed to get enough money to build two new elementary schools to take the place of Longfellow, which has not been used for several years, and Franklin, which was closed this fall. They also paved the circle drive in front of the new high school, bought a new seventy- two passenger bus and have started develop- ing the southwest corner of the lot next to the Cardinal 'Football field into a baseball dia- mond with a grass infield. Also, o committee was chosen to investi- gate the possibilities of a iunior college in Coldwater, and a decision is still endin . The con- cession stand at Waterworks Park operated continuously during the summer to swell the coFFers of the class. Football season brought out all the 'Fans and necessitated another concession stand, the Cardinal Field one. This was one of the class' most profitable night time projects. Evenings also were spent studying in many cases. Last year's scholastic standings had been dominated by boys. This year nine out of the top ten grads were ot the feminine va- riety. Janet Euans topped the group to reign as valedictorian, and Althea Krisov came in a close second to become salutatorian. Sue Davis won the DAR award as the out- 'utu1'e, End Ili h School Days standing girl citizen of the class, and then added Iaurels to that when the faculty chose her as the ideal student of the group. Reggie Ivey rated as the ideal boy pupil. An active group of class oFFicers led the activities of the class. Doug Miller, president, Tedd Houck, vice-president, Pat Holben, sec- retary, and Hal Kemp, treasurer, handled most ot the aftairs. This year's annual trip was in March instead of the usual end of May. Forty-six people who made the excursion were hailed in sev- eral spots as the best mannered group of students to be on a trip in many a day. To round out the year, the group decided to help the school by leaving several books to the library as a memorial from the Class of 1958. Senior class officers Hal Kemp, treasurer, Doug Miller, president, Tedd Houck, vice-president, and Pat Holben, secretary, discuss financial affairs. The some historic and scenic spots appeared be- fore their eyes, and they posed with Congress- man August Johansen on the lawn of the Capitol building so that they could have a photo to remind them of that wonderful trip taken in the last year of high school. As a porting gift to the school, so that fu- ture classes will remember them, this year's graduates left behind them a number of books to be placed in the library. It was hoped by the group that these books would ease the burden of finding good reading ma- terial for pleasure and for research work on term papers for the English department. 'iff Seniors Chuck Young, sitting, and Tedd Houck examine books which class left to school library as memorial. . f Seniors who journeyed on the annual trip in early March pose on the Capitol grounds with advisers and Michigan Senator, August Johansen. if Page 37 U A. 1b, ' ,, vm, ,QM ,. The main accomplishment was acquiring money for the tiling ot the recreation floor. Money derived from dances, record hops and the Variety Show went for this fund and also cheerleader uniforms for next year. ln its second year, the parent-teacher- student association continued to discuss school problems and bring the three groups together. Inspecting lockers for neatness is one task the group performed to maintain a smoothly running school. Books were supposed to be on the top two shelves while the bottom was available for boots and the like. Dancing dates were assigned to clubs as they were requested. Open nights were divid- ed among remaining organizations. Another iob performed was that of choos- ing the members of the citizenship committee. Each class commissioner, according to plan, picked out names of good students. Of these, four were chosen as the members for the committee. Girls llperate Hospital Service Cart Back row, L to R: A. During home room periods and any other possible time, the girls sold red felt pennants topped with a white C . They also started a service cart at the Branch County Hospital which furnished incidentals for the patients to buy. Basketball fans could check their coats with the girls during ball games. The club also held two regular dances and co-sponsored the Valentine Formal. Editor and assistant editor of yearbook, Diana Obed and Keith Tice, discuss handling of senior pictures, The Cardinal staff, headed by Diana Obed, editor, and Keith Tice, assistant, set out this year to bring a new type theme to the annual. Going along with the space ideas which popped up with the Russian Sputnik, the staFF decided to design a cover which would por- tray the heavens by means of a comet, which symbolizes how rapidly the high school days of students come to an end, and how quickly night-time activities race by. The theme, night and day, originated be- cause it was felt that all things emanating from the school ore actually a part of the curricular program, and that the maiority of pupils participate in some activity after dark. Thus, CHS during the day is no more active than it is in the evening. New and original poses and action shots became the goal of the staff in the desire to produce the best annual which the high school has ever produced. Adviser William Booth said, We hope that all of the students like the book. We try to please everyone. The Saturday night page, Cardinal Chatter, grew in amount of cover- age as new and more pictures were added to add to the appearance of the page. The newspaper, headed by Kay Nash, first semester editor, and Karen Faller and Sue Davis, second semester co-editors, blossomed out with a variety of new ideas and pictures, which had been lacking, to some degree, in the past. Margie Wirt and Vonnie Woods, Chatter editors, developed a stronger statif and held to certain fundamental rules which enabled them to make every deadline on time this year. Much credit 'for the success of the high school publications, according to William Booth, advisor, must be given to i3 students who attended the eighth hour workshop class in room i20. During the year their duties consisted of collecting group dues at games, supervising the parking lot, operating movie proiectors for various classes and assemblies, playing handy-man for class plays and doing other numerous ocld jobs around the school. Election of new members was held after a one semester probation during the spring, and the group attended a hockey game in Detroit in the early part of the second semes- ter. These students worked in three different fields: retail, ofliice and trade-industrial. Their employers were all local businessmen who cooperated with John Bachman, advisor, in rating and grading the students every marking period. At this time, the employers were sent rating sheets, and requested to till them in, giving such information as punctu- ality, personal neatness, ability, cooperation, dependability, attitude, ability to get along with others and job performance. The student-employees worked at their jobs half of the school day and attended classes the remainder of the day, taking subiects which related to their iob. Constructing a halloween float, furnishing soft drinks for officials and visiting teams after games, purchasing a movie proiector to view football plays and displaying a huge track record board in the rear lobby of the high school were a few of the services the club performed. This year, the proiect of sponsoring a schol- arship for a senior member was initiated. Va- rious fund-raising ideas were developed in order to provide for this citation, such as sell- ing basketball programs, school stationery and CHS pins. Several of the members were given the op- portunity to guide younger students while the remainder of the class was taking tests. This not only assisted the teachers but also, in many cases, helped the club members to de- termine their minds about their future pro- fessions. Devoted Orpha arranged for Ruthy to meet millionaire Robert Hanley CDave Pettyb. Ruthie was disappointed, for Hanley turned out to be a hypochondriac. ln the end, Pilone had helped bring to- gether all the couples in the play, and the angels completed their mission. When the nation-wide Asian Flu epidemic struck Cold- water, the affair was postponed, and finally cancelled due to bod weather. In February, 30 band members from both junior and senior high traveled to Kalamazoo to participate in the annual South- western Michigan Solo and Ensemble Festival, held on the campuses of Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo Col- lege, and also at the Methodist Church of Kalamazoo. Doug Miller and Royden Swaltield each received two awards. The other six musicians to receive a first rating were Glenn Barlow, Jim Peifler, Paul Herman, Tom English, Marian Dove, and Jean Macklin. February 29 found the band at the District Band Contest at Portage, where it received a superior rating in sight read- ing, and a final rating of excellent, or second, based upon sight reading and concert performance. The hope was that the club would grow and become an active part of the evening activity of the school. Several boys joined the group this year and spent many hours dis- cussing and building things related to science. Many others expressed interest and probably will increase the rolls next year. Spanish Club members climaxed the year with a iourney to a language day at Western Michigan University. Under the direction of Ray Cardenas the group sold programs at the football games in the fall. Oscar Renshaw headed the International Relations Club again this year, and the mem- bers again participated in the United Nations mock assembly at Hillsdale College. Horizon Club members met mostly at the homes of members and held their meetings there. Mrs. Anne Trebilcock was the advisor. Although the Coldwater reserve football team was able to win only one game during the season, the squad developed in potential. After an opening loss to Sturgis, Coach Pat Lowe's group reached their peak when they beat Marshall. Hard-fighting Albion then de- feated the iunior Cards, and Lakeview topped them while the squad was weakened by a flu epidemic. Coldwater Coldwater The season finale found the reserves lead- Coldwater ing Albion by six at the end of the third Coldwater quarter, but a two touchdown fourth period Coldwater sparked the Wildcats to victory. Hard Luck Ili Although Coach Floyd Eby's varsity cagers maanged to win only tive games of 17 dur- ing the 1958 season, several contests were decided by small margins, and with a little more luck the Cardinals would have had a much improved record. Victories came at the expense of Sturgis, whom the Cards defeated twice, Lakeview, Albion and Adrian. Marshall, East Lansing and Three Rivers capped double wins over Coldwater in conference play. Two contests played outside the Twin Val- ley with Hillsdale were losing ones for the Ebymen, and the regular season record stood at 5-l l. Back row, L to R: D. Miller, R. Paradine, B. Baseball aspirants swarmed to the gym in early March to try out for the varsity nine, under the leadership of Frank Lowe, head coach, and Gerald Weaver, assistant. Only one senior was on the squad this sea- son, and nine underclassmen returned from the squad which tied for the Twin Valley championship with Marshall in 1957. Returning lettermen included Bruce Buys, Jerry Brown, .lon Brayton, Keith Balcom, Ron Wilcox, Chuck Harvey, Jerry Dean and Dick Knight. Dean was the only senior, and Buys was a sophomore. The year began with a l4-game schedule, only seven of which were conference games. Seven or eight other boys were held as likely prospects to make the team, but at the time of this writing, no decision had been made. Coach Weaver handled a reserve squad as in past years, besides assisting with the varsity. Coach Wayne Kellogg's club swingers re- turned to the links this spring with three let- termen from last year's squad which finished fourth in Twin Valley competition. Hopes were high for a stronger finish this season with golfers Dave Petty and Tom Adams, seniors, and sophomores Sherman Stanley leading the woy. Adams and Petty both won letters in l957. Country club links were aagin used for both practice and meet competition. The members of the squad and the coach could be seen playing practice rounds until late in the evening after sessions started on Mon- day, April 4. Seniors Chuck Young and Bob Weaver, and iuniors Dave Ray and Brad White vied with Stanley for the two positions along side Petty and Adams to see who would make up the varsity foursome. Leading the ten-man roster this season were Chuck Young, Bob Weaver, Rolly Scheidler and Gordon Hinckley. The first three were seniors, cmd Hinckley was a sophomore. A bad day on the part of the squad mem- bers pushed the team into fitth place in the Twin Valley meet last year. This meet was held at East Lansing this spring, and the state regionals were in Kalamazoo. Regularly scheduled meets were held with Albion, Three Rivers, Lakeview and Sturgis on a home and home basis. One each was held with Marshall and Hillsdale. Coach Wayne Kellogg's grapplers under- went a rebuilding season this year and were rather unsuccessful in winnnig their matches, copping only three of nine meets. One man, Harry Miller, won his first round bout during the state event, but he then lost two in succession to drop out of contention. Other participants were eliminated in the first round. Injuries plagued some of the squad early in the year, and two or three members did not live up to expectations from the preced- ing year, thus contributing to the poor show- mg. Several underclassmen on the team give Coach Kellogg an opportunity to see better things in store for the matmen next season. Wins this year were over Portage twice and Howe Military Academy once. Eleven returning lettermen, bolstered by several reserve award winners, two transfer students and o 'few new prospects, carried hopes for a winning season. Larry Buys, Forrest Snow and Tony Huf- nagle were back at the pole vault pit again, Jim Curtis threw the shot, Dave Lockwood re- turned for the 440, and Dean Parks was available for the sprints. Bill Timm and Bill Salisbury, transfer stu- dents who won letters at their respective schools last season, were on hand forthe shot, and Craig Curtiss came from a successful cross country season to run in the distances. Roger Curtiss, half-miler from last year, was also back for this event. Reserves of 1957, who were counted on for many points were Hal Kemp, hurdles, Doug Miller, high iump, and Jim Mollenkopf, broad iump. Under the leadership of Joyce Downey, president, Mary McConnell, vice-president, Sally Olson, secretary, Sonet Eby, treasurer, 94 girls, an increase over last year, partici- pated in the many sports offered. Mrs. Letot taught the girls how to play speedball, how to use the bow and arrow and also took a group to Battle Creek on several occasions to use the swimming facilities there. Regular tournament games were held in basketball and volleyball, and the winning basketball team met the faculty women in a game after GAA season was terminated. The faculty women won the contest. An earlier game, pitting a picked group of GAA girls against the faculty, was won by the high school girls. Co- captains were chosen for the varsity squad, who were Jackie Berry and Yvonne Woods, both seniors. Judy McBride led the reserves. The varsity squad, in order to create stu- dent enthusiasm, rnade huge signs before each game and gave a number of pep assem- blys throughout the year. Initiating new cheers was a goal for both teams and they invented both the cheers and motions. In order to raise money for uniforms, ma- terials, and other necessities the cheerleaders sponsored a dance and sold basketball pins.
