Famous 5 'bs-m-6' 0 ltpcccipe This is Cardinal Land - Coldwater, Michi- gan - United States of America. On the pages of this book are a few of the buildings and scenes which complete the life of the com- munity in which this high school is located. Coldwater dates back well over 100 years, with the new high school being completed for occupancy exactly T04 years after the first secondary school was built in the city. The Coldwater State Home and Training School shown here has been located in the area for many years and is one of the better staffed and equipped schools in the state. The court house, fire station and city hall are all important in the conducting of all legislative, business and protective divisions of the community. They are good examples of the close cooperation which each individual part exerts. Seventy years ago excursion boats made trips up and down the Coldwater River from Pilot Knob to the city for the benefit of the people's amusement. Today it carries only the small boat traffic of fishermen and pleasure seekers. Athletics in Coldwater High School were held for years at the Waterworks Park fields. Football and track events are now held at Cardinal Field opposite the high school, and this will be the last year for the team to use the Waterworks baseball diamond because there will be two playing fields available next year near the football stadium. The hospital plays an important part in keeping the citizens healthy and bringing into the world new people for Cardinal Land. It also helps them in time of sickness and accident. Federal-Mogul gives work to many people. It is one of the larger industries that makes the community able to take its place in Cardi- nal Land. Some other places of employment in Coldwater are the Quality Spring Com- pany, Gamble-Skogmo, and Midwest Foundry. The Main theatre, the center of entertain- ment in Coldwater. The movie theater takes people out of their work-a-day world into the land of make-believe. Through the books at the public library many people are also able to leave the every- day world. The books and magazines in the library are free to anyone who enioys re- search work and reading. The homes are the places where Cardinal Land really begins. It is out of these homes that come the people to make up the staffs of the hospital, library, the Federal-Mogul, and the people that supply the personnel to run the theatre. The residents of the com- munity, and ultimately Cardinal Land, are the products of these homes. As the present generations learn and ma- ture in high school, they begin to get the foundations of good citizenship to take their places among other members of the com- mununity. The new Coldwater Senior High School has provided a meeting place for many city groups in addition to being one of the finest schools in the State of Michigan. The school cafeteria has been a lunch room for more than 400 students on each school day throughout the year and has provided a place for many civic groups to hold dinners. The gymnasium has also been the site of many city programs. The home economics department is one of the most spacious and up-to-date in this area. The well-lighted rooms are equipped with va- rious appliances found in many homes today. For the first time the physics and chemistry departments have been separated and in the physics room is found an electrical control panel similar to those found in many colleges. The large machine and agriculture shop found in the school has given students more space and modern equipment which they have never had before. This section of the building has also been used for adult educa- tion classes. 0 if? Page 8 Blll BOYER WORKING IN MOTORCYCLE SHOP ff. 1 42 me ' if Q,-N iii? Also included in this year's proiects was a student handbook and restoration of the hall monitor system. The big money-making event was the variety show, the money from which was used to help furnish the recreation room with various kinds of amusement devices in- cluding ping-pong tables, a iuke box and new records. A student court was started to try student discipline cases and mete out punishment ac- cording to the severity of the offense. The commission sponsored an exchange assembly with Marshall and Albion. The Cardinal Service Club, organized in l946, is known as the working club ot the high school. Having the large parking areas around the building and the hosting of the district basketball tournament by the school added to the duties of the boys as they were responsible for seeing that the people had parking space for their cars. Membership increased to 22 members this year, and a proiection room opposite the rec- reation room was maintained and operated for various groups by the club. Mr. Dennis, club advisor, and the whole group traveled to Pokagon Park tor a picnic as a partial pay- ment for services rendered to the school. The staff felt that a new color was needed for the cover, cmd that photographs inside the front and rear covers would add a great deal to the book. The staff attempted to show how the com- munity of Coldwater works together as a unit, and how each little section is important to the function of the city as a whole. The buildings and scenes portrayed in the pro- duction are an attempt to show the progress of the city both down through the years and at the present time. Both Publications A good community is an informed com- munity, and it is the job of the publications department to keep adults and students alike supplied with the news and activities ofthe community members. Moving into the new high school brought about some organiza- tional changes and o need for better links of communication among the various elements of Cardinal Land. Almost one-tenth at the student body writes For either Cardinal Chatter or The Mirror, and staffs include all grades. The editors of the Chatter group this year began writing a column to inform and stimulate people into taking more interest in the school and its activities. Junior high news was handled by the other building. The newspaper was printed under a new process with the cooperation of Joe Petrosoft, who prints the weekly advertiser for this area. The school purchased a new machine, the Varityper, which composes all copy for the paper. Editors and staff members were linked more closely to the problems of production by carrying out all the steps in compiling a paper except the actual press printing. Back Row, L to R: D. Sager, G. The main theme of the play was the prob- lems that confronted Professor Perry when he tried to fulfill the one requirement for be- coming Dean. That requirement was to get married. With three girls madly in love with him and another bent on making his life miserable, the resulting confusion provided many hilari- ous incidents. The play was cast as follows: Steve Gordon, Kay Nash, Janet Goodholm, Mary Jane Free- man, Nancy Renshaw, Gordon Smith, Jack Larry Skidmore, Doug Miller, Carol Doty, Long, Janet Burlew, Gail Couillard and Neil Robson. This year's debate squad participated in 16 debates in both the Twin-Valley and state leagues. During the season, which ran from November to February, the team won four contests. This year the topic Resolved: That the Fed- eral government should sustain the prices of major agricultural products at not less than 90 per cent of parity was debated by De- lores Knowles and Janet Goodholt, affirma- tive, and Bob Rice and Steve Gordon, nega- tive. Bob Teeter and Jim Spencer served as negative substitutes. Mrs. Judy Dearbaugh, in her first year at Coldwater High School as senior English, de- bate, speech and dramatics teacher, acted as debate coach. Bob Rice practices for debate contest. E17 Page 31 C0 op Plan llas Third Anniversary The third anniversary of the Cooperative Training program was this year, and the plan has increased in size considerably from the original group. There were more than 40 members in the group, all working at such jobs as retail, industrial, and secretarial po- sitions. The main purpose of this plan is to help those students who aren't going to college to adjust from high school to actual working conditions. The firms in the community co- operate with the plan by hiring these stu- dents. Each student is graded on the job. They're rated in these things: appearance, promptness, cooperation, dependability, atti- tude, manner, ability to get along with others and iob performance. Students under this plan attend school half days and work the rest of the day. A C or above is required from the students before they are eligible to receive an achievement certificate at the end of their senior year. Back Row L to R D Gentry D Pask T McBride S Bressler, N. International Relations Club members highlighted the year with a World Fair Display for the community. Seventy-two nations were represented by pictures and literature. The group also participated in the mock United Nations Assembly at Hillsdale College. The Hi-C club carried on several projects for Youth for Christ and sponsored a panel of Bible quizes. The first public performance was held in December as a Christmas Festival and the next performance was in March when three numbers were sung at the Variety Show. Other performances included the Choral Festival which took place in Lansing, Michigan and the Spring Musical Festival. Mrs. Draear changed the method of classes by having two separate re- hearsals and one full rehearsal weekly. In addition to these changes, three new, separate, groups have been added. These are the Four Cards, Terry Eberts, Bill Frankhouser, Gordon Smith, and Doug Miller. They have performed on numerous occasions for the public and students. Another group is the Hi Fi's, cl group often girls that have also made quite a few public appearances. The 1956 varsity squad had the best record since 1948 and at all times showed good sportsmanship typical of Cold- water High School. The team finished third in Twin Valley standings and had an overall five won, three lost record. Every win was a shutout for the Cardinals as they used possession type ball and a strong defense. I The season opened with a 19-O victory over Hillsdale. A rugged Albion team overran the Cards, 32-14, followed by a defeat to a pow- erful Lakeview aggregation, 34-20. Home- coming saw Coach Jack Finn and the Cardi- nals bounce back with a 20-O win over Mar- shall. Three Rivers was beaten 24-0 before East Lansing took the Cardinals, 19-6. Coldwater regained the silver football from Sturgis by the Trojans, 19-O, in the final game, with 16 seniors playing the final high school football games of their careers. Douglas also was honorary co-captain of the all-league team. Gary Brown received honorable mention in the same balloting. Douglas, Brown, Doug Baysinger, LeVon Den- sel, Bill Robinson, Doug Parshall and De- Wayne Cox completed their high school bas- ketball days with the end ofthe season. The Cardinals opened with a 68-53 loss to Three Rivers on the Wildcats home court but bounced back with a 61-57 win over Marshall in Coldwaterfs gym. The next two games were split the same way, with a 69-57 loss to East Lansing away and a victory over Albion at home, 66-51. Following this Sturgis beat Coldwater at Sturgis, 7l-50, and Hillsdale won its first of three victories for the year, 6l-57. The Hornets seemed to have a iinx over the Cards as all three wins were by four point margins with the last one in the District Tournament held in Coldwater. The Ebymen then took their next win over Lakeview in the Cardinal gym, 59-54. Adrian then defeated the Cards, 74-56, Three Rivers repeated the earlies win, 66-59, Marshall turned the tables, 60-44, and Albion won, 72-64. Sturgis again took the Cardinals, 67- 60, and Coldwater won two in a row over Lakeview, 60-46, and Adrian, 55-46. East Lansing rounded out the season by de- feating the locals on their home court, 59-46, with Paul Douglas and Art Brandstatter, the conference's second place scorer, battling each other. The cheerleaders are now chosen on ability by the GAA advisor as coaches choose their players. Another new rule is that each varsity squad member must have had a year's experience on the reserve squad and no senior may be a reserve cheer- leader. The varsity squad for the year included Jackie Berry, Judie Dillon, Delores Knowles, Donna May, Neil Robson, and Yvonne Woods. Reserve cheerleaders were Pat Bennett, Janet Burlew, Linda Iffland, Judy McBride, Gail Quick, Ellen Rittenhouse and Carol Silvers. The squads sold megaphones at basketball games and sponsored a dance to pay for new uniforms. They also made signs before each game to create student enthusiasm. Instead ot giving 50 points for each sport they de- cided to give 40 points, therefore getting a greater amount of girls playing in each sport. The points still had to end up a total of 200 at the end of the year in order for the girls to receive awards. Besides volleyball, basketball, softball, badminton, ping pong, bowling, tennis and ofliiciating, something new was added. The trampoline was introduced for the first time to the GAA. The girls were given a few in- structions and learned to do a few simple tricks. 'fl Page 65 School Board Faces Many Ne The Coldwater Board of Education, with Dr. Harold Weidner as president, Albin Obed as vice-president, Edward Holtz, secretary, and James Snyder, treasurer, faced many in- creasingly large problems this year with the opening of the new high school and work on two new elementary schools. Other board members were Mariette Mooi and Charles Kingsley. Mrs. Wigent was elected by the board to serve as assistant secretary and treasurer. A dedication for the new high school was held last fall by the board. Many people ot the community attended the ceremony and toured the school, a handbook with the pro- gram and a building plan was given to each person who attended. Next fall the two new elementary schools will be opened. ? P24 PF Most of the problems facing the board have at their roots the question of sufficient fi- nances to perform the school services that people want. Landscaping and maintenance of school property is a large problem, but an even larger problem is increased enrollment which means larger faculties. With an enrollment increase from 1,500 students 'IO years ago to 2,500 now, the fac- ulty has been increased from 60 to over 'l0O. Although Longfellow School has been aban- doned and Franklin soon will be, Edison, the new high school, and two other new elemen- tary schools are taking their places. The an- nexing of seven rural districts to the Cold- water City School System in recent years has also increased the size of the board and the number of board members. L to R: James Snyder, W. Seniors First Class From New School This year's graduating class is the first of many to attend classes in the new high school. During the years at Roosevelt, the class worked hard to boost themselves to the po- sition of seniors. As juniors, the class sponsored a paper drive, a Swiss steak supper, and the play, Lost Horizon to raise funds for the Jr.-Sr. Banquet and Prom that they gave in honor of the seniors. Gail Spoon and Jan Weekly represented the class on the homecoming court. After a summer of working in the park concession stand, they entered school, sen- iors at last! Bob Teeter led the school as mayor and Ken Furgason was elected class presi- dent. Jan Weakly, and senior court members, Pat Mooi and Gail Spoon reigned over the homecoming dance. Kay Hodgman and Larry Knight tied for top scholastic spot in the class as co-valedictorians, Bob Rice was salutato- rian. The students and faculty chose Jan Weakly DAR girl and the faculty chose Doug Parshall and Delores Knowles Ideal Boy and Girl. Senior thespians presented Home Sweet Homicide. After their trip to New York and Washing- ton, D. C., the class concluded their high school days with baccalaureate, class day, and commencement.
