For weeks I racked my brain trying to think of some deiinite feature to apply to the faculty - to no avail! Finally, I got together a conglomeration of corny ideas and started to write. So if you find these pages kind of njumbled and jivey , you'll know the reason why? From a very reliable source ta la grapevinel, I have learned that several members of the faculty have great literary talent, and during the past year have written some interesting HJ works. O MR. POULOS has turned capitalistic on us and has burst forth with his latest volume HOW TO GET RICH QUICK! MR. OLSEN not long ago published his Csighj autobiography FOR WHOM THE 'BELLES' TOIL thow truelj. Swede likes to read it! O MR. GREEN has turned romanticist on us and has written a stirring story THE LOVE TRIANGLE . Mr. Green does admit, however, that he has lifted out several ANGLES which should have been woven into the plot. The moral of the story is A good line is the shortest distance between two dates . I From the English department in Junior High I received the following anecdote: 'TO BE OR NOT TO BE' is the most recent article by MRS. HUDSON. It deals with the correct grammatical construction of infmitives - a truly stirring piece of work! a MR. SIBLEY'S best seller of the year was a na- ture story, THE HUNT . This book treats of his own experiences throughout the years, and his es- capes from chemistry HOUNDS . A pretty FOXY bit of work! I MRS. FRIZZO'S literary accomplishment was along the same line as Mr. Sibley's. Her's was an autobiog- raphy, titled THE LION TAMER ! I have stated above that this column will be found in a turmoil to the end. That which follows is some miscellaneous information I have gathered about the teachers! 12 MR. RENSHAW has been making some very inten- sive research on the subject of narcotics and other sleep-producing drugs. He says he doesn't mind his students sleeping, but snoring is just a trifle more than he can take! MRS. MacFARLANE is really a slick chick , hep to the jive , et all She's been COOKING on the fron burner all year! MR. VVEEKS not long ago took a special corre- spondence course from Warden Duffy of San Quentin to become better acquainted in' the correct procedure of handling the inmates of his institution! MISS EVELYN MOORE may think that her pupils try to bluff a lot. But honest, both seniors and sopho- mores say that they've been trying to get MOORE from Government and World Problems all year! CHS has been terrorized all year by the subversive activities of the Gestopo fof the subversive activities of the students!J better known as MR. DENNIS. That's O.K. Mr. Dennis. We know it's your bounden duty - we keep telling ourselves! O Having exhausted my supply of prose, 1 find it necessary to turn to poetry in one form or another tmostly no formlj The boys in the back row of MRS. NELSON'S World Lit. class have cut up a lot this year. Being iepentent though, they have expressed their apologies through the following poem. - Dear, dear Lola Sometimes Lit. is so droll-a 'I'hat's why we in the back row-la Just have to let go-la! We have a new teacher in school She makes all the young fellas drool She's pretty and thing full of pep to the brim Her name is MISS RICH Her admirer is JIM! WORDS TO THE WISE . . . ? QCONTINUEDJ I suppose MISS LAZENBY is still making refer- ences to her famous ancestors -- but Please Miss Lazenby, give us a break' Vife know you're related to Sir Francis Drake! You're all familiar with a popular school yell, of which the following revision appears. 1-2-3-4- ' Not 'who are we for' but 'what are we here for' 1-2-3-4- fwe love you Addie l MISS ALLlSON'S gym classes' lasses will be glad to hear that the TAXI bill for transportation over to gym has passed both Houses-while you have been passing out! As soon as the President's signature is secured, you can expect action, gals! Some thirty-five years ago was born A man who wanted to 'toot his own horn' Now his bandsters blow and puff But he comes back, 'That's not enough' Violin, Mandolin, Oboe He's master of them all He can really hit the HIGH notes Though he's not so very tall! - CMR. BONDJ MRS. AITCHISON established a reputation in an assembly early this year Perhaps you remember- 0ur 'Pistol Packin' Mama' Is really quite a gal I hear she packs a mean wallop From the boys in study hall! Miss GERTRUDE MOORE is the quiet type, With a subtle sense of humor Her temper never gets the best of her Like her, we wish there were a few more! A very grammatical person who knows all her DO's from her DON'T's I MRS. VAN AKEN, we'll study our grammar Forget it? Don't worry - we won't! -- C MRS. RENSHAW always takes the prize For friendliness in Junior High This year the same thing still applies, Say all the gals and guys! Stenography and typing Any business line you wish MR. RICE will help you out Commercial stuff's his dish! 13 MISS SWANSON knows all about Why two and two make- four But what do one and one make? WHOOPEEV' I MR COOK for one so very young Has got the Study Hall on the run But we don't mind, because you're cute We only wish that you were mute . fThis poem was contributed by the girls in the seventh hour Study Hallj. COACH EBY makes all the young girls swoon He is a dream, believe us A swell fellow, a wonderful coach We hate to have you leave us! Spanish, French, and Latin She speaks them ,all with ease But gee, MISS STEFFANIAK, We'll stick to English, if you please! MR GRIGG seems so shy and timid And very quiet, so - He isn't much on conversation He likes to talk 'SHOP' though! MRS. COCHRANE is remembered for her graceful ballet dancing in the faculty assembly earlier this year. A very graceful ballet dancer ls Mrs. Cochrane, as everyone knows But whether it be American Lit. or the ballet She's always on her toes! The following poem is dedicated to MISS PHILIPS, our typing teacher, who is still able to survive after a year of slam-bang Ito be taken literallyj typing pupils! Miss Philips, our cute little redhead Excuses our errors and JERKS The only time she gets KEYed up . Is when we 'gum up the WORKS' ! Kindness, tolerance, understanding Are the qualities we detect In MISS SEMMELROTH, whose high virtues Command, from all, respect! O FRIENDSHIPS ARE FORMED LN THE CLASS ROOMS THAT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. AT THE SAME TIME ARE BETTER PRE- PARING OURSELVES TO LEAD SUCCESSFUL LIVES TOMORROW. 0140 CLASSES 1 W Pi? f' X jf 'S J Q XX X ax E X N ' I Q :xv . Ag, BILL ZABONICK, President BILL NEWBERRY, Vice President JOANN HILBERT, Secretary - PATTY HARVEY, Treasurer dass of W4 171 Rewkw It really takes some strenuous memory work to travel back across the pages of time and recall what's happened to the class of '44. But it's fun to reminisce and try to remember some of the funny things we did 'way back then! In 1938, as green seventh graders, We en- tered Junior High with a very lost feeling. Here we were in an entirely different building with a lot of strange people fthe faculty?'?j. Polly Walker used an unusual procedure to make her debut. She fell flat on her face on the platform in the study hall, afterward realizing that there WERE steps up to the desk -A we elected class officers: President, Duane Papkeg Vice-President, Joann Hilbert: Secretaryffreas- urer, Patsy Kibbe - Flat Foot Fl00gie dom- inated the musical world in '38, '39-a few made the gossip columns, and items such as the fol- lowing appeared in the Mirror : Doris Linton is wondering if E. Zinn will ever give her a tumble f Weedy went with Patty Carlsj - Marge A. seems to be growing up a bit too fast. You had better go on a diet --- Brownie H. has changed her mind about Robert Brayton. What can the matter be? - Wanda Barth- olmew and Ethlyn Palmatier are after Dick As- bury - Polly Walker is torn between two flames. One flame is Duane Papke, and the other one is Russell Alexander . So on to the eighth grade. We began to relax and make ourselves at home V- we even became so daring as to venture into HARRY'S, or peep in on the dances at the Parish House, where Pork Morgan's band Ubanged it out every Saturday night - making pins out of macaroni was all the rage - The Mirror dirt columns ran thus: ln the eighth grade a few fContinued on Page 521 16 RVSSICLL ALEX- MARGERY SAM ANDERSON DELLA BALLARD DICK BARRACK ANIIEH Uiusj AMADEN lficefyj PCI... The Coldwater Cards started off the foot- ball season with the Three Rivers Wildcats. Al- though Coldwater lost, it was one of the scrap- piest games ever, and everyone agreed that Coach Eby's team showed very good promise for the future. The Lakeview game will long be remembered for its being fought to a scoreless tie in the rain, mud, and slush. The Spartan fLakeviewj team held fast un- der five Cardinal attacks for not one touchdown! The Hillsdale Hornets were next over- whelmed 41 to 12 in one of our most outstanding victoriesg Captain Snuff Newberry himself making four touchdowns personally, and Clyde 60 fSpooferJ Gilbert breaking up two passes, and nearly intercepting a third. An ankle injury early in the game bogged down the Cards of- fensive in the Marshall game, resulting in a Wildcat victory. Our team's smashing race-horse offensive put an end to Albion's six years of victories over CHS. The last and final game of the season arrived with Sturgis. They won 26-20. The boys that played their last game for CHS that night were: Bill Newberry, Bill Zabon- ick, Bob Brayton, Duane Papkef Charles Birch, and Elwin Ferguson. Congratulations to these boys and to the boys that will be on the future football team of CHS Cardinals. The opening game of the 1943 football season was with Three Rivers. It was a close fought game with the Wild- cats scoring their first touchdown in the opening eight minutes of the game, and then being swept back by a strong Cardinal'counter-offensive. But they intercepted a pass in the third quarter to make their final touchdown. Score: 12-O! The Lakeview game will long be remembered, for it was played in the rain and mud to a scoreless tie! The next game showed Coldwater's steadily improv- ing squad browbeat the Hillsdale eleven 41-12,' and there- after followed their most crushing defeat! Losing Papke, Roby and Birch by injuries, the Marshall Redskins succeeded in dominating the field, winning 32-6. Six days later the Cardinals showed what they were made of, after traveling to Albion, and bringing home the bacon, a CHS victory 25-14., Well, that's about all, except the last game of the sea- son with Sturgis! Spectators thronged the field to see the Seniors play their last game, and attempt to win the silver trophy from the Trojans. The score tells how hard they tried, 26-20 in favor of Sturgis. place in the Twin-Valley, losing 3, A Coldwater copped third winning 2, and tieing 1.
