' - - flax: of 1942 ln September 1035? this class entered senior high sehool as 1-15 not too eonfident sophomores. They were soon. put at ease hy the seniors at an ex- citing Sophomore Reeeption. Wishing to show their appreciation, they sponsored a bang-up Christmas Party for the whole school. Feeling far more at ease in their Junior year, they gave as their Junior l'lay. 'l'he Vampire Hat from which they derived more profit than from any play given up to that time. Aided hy this financial help, they put on one ol' the best .lunior-Senior Banquets ever given. 'l'heir Senior year proved to be the most exciting and dil'l'erent exper- ience they had enjoyed. The class chose Wayne Green as president. With the help of the other officers. plans were soon made for their Sophomore Reception. This function was the first of a long list ol' senior successes. The Senior Play went over the top on a par with the one given the previous year. Shooting at a high goal the Class of '42 chose as their Class Memorial, curtains for the windows and stage of the auditorium. They secured the cooperation ol' the Board of Education and sponsored a benefit movie to raise the funds necessary in addition to the already fine class treasury hal- anee. Scoring again under the direction ol' their fine officers and their advisers, Miss Wellington and Mr. Renshaw, the class was acclaimed at the lliamond .luhilee Commencement for their fine gift. lt might also be mentioned that this was the largest class to graduate to this date. This class won honors both in quality and quantity. We are going to miss the Class of 1942. Good luck, seniors! This year's Student Commission was composed of Mayor Bob Browne, Clerk Edna Lytle, Senior Commissioner Dick Carr. Junior Commissioner Clare Wise, and Sophomore Commissioner Jerry Smith. Credit for many improvements around school goes to this student- elected organization. To heighten interest in sports events. they broad- cast football games at the field, printed the Sturgis football game program, and gave out basketball schedule cards. The Commission sponsored after-game dances, and decorated the school building for Christmas. A resolution was passed providing that Commission members should receive awards. A popularity contest was held in March, and an exchange assembly and Sadie Hawkins week were promoted in the spring. The heads of committees were as follows: Assembly Committee, Edna Lytleg Social Committee, Dick Carrg Citizenship Committee, Clare Wise, Athletic Committee, Jerry Smith. DEBATE Resolved: That every able bodied male citizen of the United States be required to have one year of full time military training before attaining the present draft age. This debate question was supported this year on the affirmative by Tom Wright, Margaret Gould, and Shirley Wilcox while the negative side was presented by Wayne Green, Madelene Jones, and Mary Margaret Butler, who alternated with Dick Milliman. Coached by Miss Perryman our debaters held their own in both of the Twin Valley Tournaments, winning one debate and losing one in the tourna- ment on December 12. and also the one on January 6. Both were held at Michigan State College at East Lansing. Besides this, two practice debates were held with each of the Twin Valley Conference cities, and also with Quincy. In the spring contests we were represented in Oratory by Tom Wright and Arthur Lewis, in Extempore Speaking by Wayne Green: in Declamation by Dick Millirnang and in Dramatic Declamation by Margaret Gould. We won third place in Twin Valley Speech activities for the year. Arthur Lewis won the District Contest with his oration. J 'Nw ..,.. Vzbfory C'ounc17 O 0 0 l In order that Coldwater High School could do its part in the war effort, the war council was set up in February. Each social science class elected a delegate, thus forming a group o co-ordinator, Mr. Elliott, and Mr. Renshaw, formed the council. Having elected Eugene Pascoe as chairman, the council swung into action almost immediately. They assumed the responsibility ol' collecting' paper, rags and old metal until the end of the school year, amassing' a total of T5 tons ol' paper and 12 tons ol' old metal. thus the salvage committee did their bit toward the national effort. The war savings committee starting' stamp sales on Monday morning' i' fourteen students who with Mr. Weeks. only, soon adopted the procedure of' selling every day. Thus, this committee was able to report a sale of more than S300 by the termination of the school year. Under their chairman, Jim Thomas, the Victory Book Campaign, held a l'book day. Each student was requested to bring a book to pass on to the armed services. A large number of books was added to the county's quota as a result. Another successful committee ol' the council was the letters to the Ser vice committee with E lect addresses ol' the many alumni in the armed services, promote corres- pondence with them, and send them the school paper. Vere Weaver as chairman assisted greatly in the promoting' of many activi tics. Thus C. ll. S. has done her part for democracy in 19112. fi ' - 37 S'lBiL- T ' 'W gt., ' . . ,-J ' :- '-'-1- -7- -. w-f. fm- - .- . ,,- .1 , ,- ,-mf f.1,1 ..'- f: --' 1' ,. - A 1- -,..a,, -, , -.. - . 5- ,.,. .N ., A ,. - ,-.- - ' .5 --:eps-f., . , 5 -. After the Armistice Day Victory in Football over Sturgis, the UC Club and the Football Squad were entertained by the Rotary Club at their annual Football liinquet. All the boys had a big feed . and alter dinner there were speeches and a movie of the Michigan and Ohio State Football Ganr-. For several weeks on Saturday the boys collected paper, with help ol' the Junior Chamber of Commerce, to earn money to buy new football uni- forms for the next four years. The proceeds from this conservation campaign made a 50 per cent contribution to the High Si-bool Athletic Association for complete new uniforms for three full teams. All boys who win a Varsity Letter are eligible to become members ol' this club. This group has been a part ol' C. ll. S. for many years and con- sequently bas many alumni members. The past year has been an especially active year because of the spirit of the President Zinn and faculty adviser Coach Nelson. TI-IE HOME ECONOMICS CLUB The Home Economics Club feels that it has really accomplished :1 great deal since it was first organized three years ago with the Junior and Senior High clubs separately. Uniting in 19-ill. the election of officers open- ed the year with Guinevere Weaver acting as President, Donna Lint as Vice Presidentg Annette Branch as recording secretary, Doris Johnson as cor- responding secretaryg and Mary Margaret Butler as treasurer. Organizing with about 50 members, it adopted a constitution, a point system for earning pins, and affiliated with the state and national clubs Among the outstanding things accomplished are: Sponsored Halloween Barn Dance, held a dignified formal initiation, helped with Cafeteria for 95 people. contributed toys to Kiwanis for Xmas party for poor children, went caroling out to County Infirmary with gifts of candy and cookies for inmates, established a placement bureau, sent the President and Doris Johnson to the state convention as delegates, bought a Betty Lamp for the Home Eco- nomics room, held a Father-Daughter Banquet. a sandwich, popcorn and hamburg sale and started a club scrap book. With this program for the year, it was certainly kept busy most of the time. It hopes for an even better one next year. Advisers: Mrs. MacFarlane, Miss Barshney. Stuclent Council I v'1- tnrc-J. They also have hostesses and a student adviser. These officers have done a splendid job this year. The band has worked hard. Early morning practices, evening practices, and Sunday practices, have made a playing and marching' organization of which our high school is justly proud. Our high school band plays an important part in the life of C. H. S. During the football season. every game has a between-the-halves perfor- mance of snappy music and new marching formations. During the basketball season, the band, divides in half for each game. Sparkling' music, novelty acts and fancy twirling do much to make the games more lively. Throughout the year, the music department plans toward the spring festivals which come in April. This year saw our marching band bring home a well deserved first division rating in the state contest. Much of the credit for the success of the band goes to the untiring activity of the Band and Orchestra Parents organization, which helps raise funds for trips and awards, and lends a lot of moral support to the music department. ln addition to these regular activities. the band serves the community during' the year by playing' at fairs, in parades, for community meetings, and business promotion programs. Around school, the band offers an annual concert of very fine quality. And they cooperate in all school activities. Many assemblies throughout the year make use of the entrie band or some of its members. So for all these favors, We say, Hats off to the Band. Flutes Alnaden. lllarlrery MrBrlv.le. Dorothea Yonkman. SENIOR I-IIGI-I CHORUS If you were to wander into the halls of C. H. S. during' the first and third hours you would hear all kinds of music 'floating' from the auditorium, and if you should happen to venture into the auditorium you'd see Miss Carol Behrents directing' the boys and girls. Yes, she's our chorus director. For the first time the chorus had a party, and it was such a success they had another. The chorus worked hard this year to put on the following: programs: an assembly, a program for the parents, Christmas program, Christmas caroling, Fortnightly Music in the Home and Community Program Operetta, and the Twin Valley Music Festival which Was held March 25, in Albion. Evelyn Johnson was their pianist. Appearing' with the Glee Club this year was a senior girls' quartet known as the Four Tones. It consists of Pauline Gilfillan, Willa Lathrop, Charlene Schlatter, and Kathryn Clark, with Maxine Ellinger playing the piano for them. We thank the glee club for putting a song in our hearts. , , ,, . . A . ,. f .. I . , -. f . 1 -f ,Q-A-,,-. ,,. .A . ,,f -,M 5 I I 1' V- ., .. - ,L ,,. ,, ., gh--., .. , - ff . . - , ..,. .-.- . Many oi' the boys were younger and in all, sixteen boys represented the fresh- man and sophomore classes. The boys had little experience behind them, however, and dropped many close games. This year six teams composed the Twin Valley Conference. The Cards started right off on the hard luck road and lost four games in the last imiingg of play. A few of the heart-breakers were: Sturgis scoring' winning runs in the seventh, Lakeview 5-4 in the seventh, Marshall 4-3 in the seventh. The future looks very bright with all the Young talent. If the boys don't find jobs in industry, as nine of them did this year, the prospects are very good. Five seniors are playing' their last games for C. H .S. They are all see- ing' action and making good accounts for themselves. They are: Watson, catcherg W. Green, pitcher and first baseg D. Tappenden, outfield: Brockway, outfield: and Pascoe, pitcher and outfield. im,-,qs :mul wx' 'FOI' IIUXV: Jessup, Snyder. kV04lllXVIll'll, Conch XYeel4s, linprlo, Iiutlg-r, Chu,-4-h, 13U'l 1'UM HOW: Lxlurcncy, lktplce, Browne. There determined to win, they toppled five straight opponents: Alhion, Lakeview, Hillsdale, Sturgis, and Adrian, to carry home the Twin Valley Tournament Championship. After this. the Cardinal netnien finished the rcmaining' season in fine style. Coach Weeks did a fine job of coaching even though he had his boys play a match with water knee deep on the courts which later was called Week's Aquacaden. Five boys will graduate this year but we het Coach Weeks will still put a good team on the courts next year. - .- X- mv 'W ' - w -' . ll - ..Q--1,,.1':g.sp-,+!
