COLCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL 1891-1951 The records show that C. H. S.'S first graduating class was in 1891, making us sixty years old. The school formerly occupied the North Side Grade School with two rooms upstairs and two rooms plus an office upstairs. A labor- atory, furnace room, and store room occupied the basement. In 1925, a contract was given to Van Etten an Wetzel of Macomb to build four new rooms, a study hall, and the gymnasium. During the remodeling a new heating system was installed In December, 1946, a new furnace was installed, the old one having gone bad This required a weak for installation and everyone enjoyed a small vacation Again, in 1949 SO the school was expanded to take care of the growing student body This time a music room, a new agriculture room and an office for our unit superintendent, Mr Fleming, were added to the North end of the building In 1947 48, two school buses were purchased by the school district for the purpose of conveying the country students to town In 1948 49 a unit district was put in and Mr Fleming was appointed as super intendent over all the schools in the district A bus and a new station bus was purchased Again, in In 1922 23 the COURANT a editqrship of Keith Bayless wagon were added to the bus staff In 1949 50, another new 1950 Sl, a new bus was purchased to take school newspaper was begun under the During the year of 1925 26 it was changed to a magazine and stories were written for the magazine by various boys and girls of the student body In 1950 51 a school newspaper was taken up after not having one for several years It's title is the BIRCH BARK care of the many students who live in rural areas.
