':' SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 3, 1946 the 'wee papooses' began their Journey to the land of the mighty At our brave, of the Powell Indian big chiefs and from far and wide they came to grow at last into a tribe. Big chief Fleming placed us under the watchful eye of Miss Kern first powwwow we selected as our leader Betty Nelson with that stalwart Paul Parks as her guide and assistant Ann HcGrann became the keeper signals and the wampum pile was entrusted to Jack Hollenbaok lax and Jeanne McCullum represented us at the Homecoming dance for all the maids and braves in school On October 3rd, the older trlbesmen told us that we should come dressed as pale faces and run the gauntlet We bore our punishment bravely as befitted our tradition and the rest of our year passed rather quietly -like life in every Indian camp' However before the year was over we lost five of our best braves but gained one That Council of Ghiefs known as the School Board ' They called us together again September 2, 1947 under Big Chief Whitsltt This year Paul Parks was our chief and Max Powell, his assistant, June Hcdullough was elected scribbler and Robert Waterbury was the wampum snatcher On September 24th we decided to raid the camp of the under tribesmen and after a rough day smoked the peace pipe with them that evening This year several of our maids Joined G A A Twelve of our tribe made the 'drummers,' fifteen were in our music pow wow and nineteen in the cheering section This year our representatives on the committee for the h ge peace dance were Ann McGrann and Paul Parks On September l, 1948, we were brought back again to our beloved hunting grounds We were much better behaved and far more quiet this year, urged on by Mrs Anderson We were attached to our chief and his assistant so they guided us through another year Ann HcGrann was chosen to scribble the signs in the language of the Gregg tribe For a change we had all new workers in the treasury department, headed by Maurlne Shaw A few of our more ambitious tribesmen Joined various organizations Sixteen of our warblers were to be found in the music conclave, nlne contributed to the squeaks and squawks of the orchestra Thirteen joined G A A , fourteen went into the scream and holler club and fou of our best oontortlonists led the call for blood at every contest of athletic prowess a e 0 e - O e ooo e e o e e e e e . e u e o e e e o 0 ' '1 o e 1 - ' 1 e SENIOR CLASS HISTORY CONTINUED On November b, the tribe put on a great show 'The Fighting Littles This venture was directed bv Mrs Roberts, who was ably assisted by Mrs Anderson The addition to our wamoum hoard thus gained, was so great that we decided to invest part of it in a great pow wow for our superiors This event occurred on Wav 5 and the scene of the Feast was The Virginia, the country club at Rushville No tribal function was ever more gala As a token of remembrance we ordered our class rings so that their mystic insignia might be ready in the fall to guide us through the remainder of our Journey Dean Ives and Betty Nelson were this year's candidates for King and Queen at the big all tribes pow wow On September 6 19U9 we, at last the 'forty big chief's', returned to run our remaining lap to the happy hunting ground which lies beyond graduation Paul Parks again became our 'heap big chief' but Dean Ives was made his assistant, Joan Valentine was elected to paint the sign language and Curlene Kleinkopf was entrusted with our wampum belts Twenty of our people Joined fifteen into the cheering club and three young braves found themselves in many sports For excitement early in the year we gave a great 'rolling pow wow' a skating party at the rink in Carthage and invited the three lesser tribes to join us In order to earn the necessary wampum for a tribal trip our speech makers put 'One Foot in Heaven' and secured a goodly store With these funds the forty big chiefs had one last happy trek We were also invited to a great feast given by the Junior tribe in our honor The occasion proved to be one which would be long remembered In order to keep our memories green in the hearts and minds of the under tribesmen we invited Blankenbergs studio from Kankakee to come down and take a snap at us for better or for worse, which ever it might be What a ecreaml Well, fellow tribes, our dav has come Now we leave these fruitful hunting grounds which we entered as wee papooees to journey on to richer lands Our language of signs and figures has been well learned and we bid farewell to all and wish much success to those who follow the tribes which will take our places I l the singing conclave, nine the tom-tom performers, twelve went into G. V rl J, f 2' BASKETBALL Colchester High School completed its most successful season ln the past 7 years during the current season in winning 14 games and losing 12. The team as usual was handicapped due to the lack of height. Also sickness and injuries seemed to run unusually high on the squad during the season. These factors were in part overcome through their ability in good floor play together with being able to hit consistently from the floor. Dean Ives, a Senior, was the leading scorer and rebounder for the team this season and his value to the team is evidenced by the fact that he was selected unanimously on the LaHolne Valley Conference All-Star Team. SChI'Odt: ' ' BAND For the past several years, the students have been studying with the high school band for an accompaniment below them in the gym, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday They were really quite patient about it and some them even asked for certain pieces to be played This year about December, Mr Jewsbury, the fellow who waves the stick, was happy to announce to an even happier student body and faculty that the band would be moving into the sound proof music room which had Just been built The first day we played in there we nearly scared ourselves into running away With the walls moved in 10 to 20 feet and the ceiling down 10 feet, we could hear each and every one of our slight mistakes We began to understand what the classes above had been experiencing Things are much better now Hr Jewsbury, in cleaning out the music files, discovered music we had not played for some time and much enjoyment was had ln reading through some of the good old numbers of bvgone days We gained three from grade school this year but we sure will suffer a loss for ten players will be leaving this spring for bigger events Mr Harris thinks we may get a few good ones from grade school next year thoughl Ve have played for several events this year including the Junior Class Plav, Labor Day Picnic and a number of basket ball games The audience discovered the band had enough rhythm so that they could clap and keep in time with us It was kind of a surprise to us, too We hope to play for In the music contest we have entered one cornet solo, Maurine Shaw, one piano solo, Lewis Payne and one baritone horn solo, Joan Jewsbury G A A History The Girls' Athletic Association met shortly after the opening of school with B2 members and with Mrs Holcomb as our leader The following officers were elected President Jeanne McCullum Vice President Ann McGrann Treasurer Patsy McClure Point Keeper Joan Jewsbury Assistant Point Keeper Shirley Beck Reporter JoAnne McClure The purpose of this organization is to promote an interest in sports and . of the Senior Class Play, a spring concert, and perhaps Commencement. G. A. A. History continued and out-door activities both individually and in groups. It also aims at the development of good health among its members. Points are earned in different ways, such as hiking, skating, horse back riding, bowling, swimming or any kind ar sport Each of these sports has a certain number of points and at the end of the year they are totaled this total plus an annual health examination, is the basis for the various awards given Six girls from our organization were invited to attend 'Play Day' a Macomb 'Play Day' is a day given up to playing games and competing against each other in sports activities In September we had a hike and weiner roast and invited the Freshman to help them to understand the purpose and fun of GAA In October, three girls were selected to go to Jacksonville to a GAA workshop Here the girls had a chance to associate and get better acquainted with girls from other chapters of GAA We have a GAA practice in some sport each week to help us receive points as well as to keep the girls in tip top shape and health We have volley ball and basketball tournaments Each team had a Captain, who directed her team and helped arrange the schedule A GAA Christmas party was given at which we played baskethmll had refreshments and exchanged gifts We held an initiation party February 15 for the new members and have had a very hlPPY and successful year in one of the best extra curricular Mrs Anderson explaining how to use carbon paper 'Now today you will have to penalize yourself double for any error you make Your carbon copy doubles your errors, you see ' Gene Louderman 'Please, Mrs Anderson, could we use carbon paper with our next timed writing? This is the first year that the Future Homemakers of America has been organized in this school The officers are President Bonnie Bell vice president Darlene Hightower secretary, Pat Pensinger and treasure, Beverly Knowles There are several minor officers also Mrs Mary Harrison was chosen as our Chapter Mother We were officially installed at a candlelight service in October by La Harpe We have had a bake sale sold pressing cloths, and served hot lunches at school to raise money We are going to send old clothing over seas Rally Day was observed by us in Macomb in February We are scheduled to sponsor a radio program over WKAI in April We helped the FFA sponsor a barn dance The eighth grade girls are invited to attend our last meeting to familiarize themselves with our org nization Shirts Jackets and symbols may be purchased by any member who wishes them The officers for the Future Farmers of America for 1949 50 are David Coulter President Gene Louderman vice president Richard McClure secretary Keith Carson reporter and Wendell Wetzel, sentinel Our first major activity of this year was joining with the FHA in sponsoring an all school barn dance Several of us entered the seed a grain contest at Nauvoo Our basketball team has won five games and lost none far The team is scheduled to enter the Prairie City tourney which we won last year The chapter activities for raising money include the sale of magazines, garden seed and charging admission to their games With this money the seniors plan to take a trip The seniors last year enjoyed their trip very much During the summer the boys participated in the state FFA convention at Champaign the sectional FFA fair in Macomb, and attended Camp Eastman on the Mississippi River F.
