The first instructions we were given this year were to welcome the Freshman Army with an initiation, ' We had many successful parties this year, one of which was an all-school party, sponsored by our- selves. ' J Mr. Cooper deserves the credit for most of our success in these great expansions. ' Our Officers this year were! Dewey Hall--e-President Bob Biswelle--Vice President Jim Hodges---Secretary 1 Army ' , At the beginning of our 1942-45 school year, fifty-five khaki clad Army men were seen marching into the camp of studies. The first few days they p were given-some training, but after a few weeks of K. P. duty they were well equipped for combat service. Their iniation was a laughable subject when they dressed in their G. I. uniforms. Such a clashing of l the greens! ' For the first year the Army picked these Officers! HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BASKETBALL SEASON D 'The 1942-45-basketball season was one of the most successful in recent years of the Colchester Community High School.' During the season, the team won the- County Tournament, placed second in the LaMo1ne Valley Conference, second in the McDonough County conference, and won second place in the regional tournament at Rose- villea Altogether the season ended with 20 games won and 4 lost. ' , Colchester established itself as having the makings of a strong team by losing the first game of the season EQ to 27 to Macomb High. This loss was later avenged by a 35 to 29 win on the Macomb floor. The season was further high lighted by four w1ns'from our neighbor rivals, the Academy. The climax of the season came when Coach Cooper's artists came through to defeat Prairie City 24 to 27 in the finals of the county tournament played before thousands of fans on the large Western floor at Macomb. This year's team had the ability to come through and win close games, and both they and Coach Cooper are to be congratulated on their fine season, The whole first team plus three others on the squad are Seniors and will be missed another year. Another senior member of the squad with size and desire to play. A sophomore with height and future promise. WFranku played in several games this year as a Freshman: is tall and ag- gressive and has lots of possibil- ities. All thc players will be back for the Spring season. t Hall D1llon's steady hlttina and important position behind the bat will be hard to fill. But it is a hole which must be filled effectively for the team. - Joe Cooper, the whiz right handerfof Chester High, will try to control his life as he does his pitched ball. See that wide last one, oops, sorry! cut the middle of the plate. Hey Coach, Need another pitcher and how about another hitter? Harold Nelson the southpaw first baseman will venture to go through the troubles of life, with the battinc averaxe and eye to aid him. Joe Hoyt the rieht fielder with an eye for long diii?nce hittlnm will eye distant goals with equal S 0 Clark Griswold the center fielder of the team a southpaw and a goodhhitter. These five players will be sorely missed in the coming year but I am sure,the1r positions can be filled by able and competent players coming up from the ranks. Martin QQ .J. 1 A D 'IQ GLEE CLUB The NHour of Charmn is a well organized club with the advancement and appreciation of music as its goal. It has a present membership of about forty with Elva Cuba as President. During 1941- 42 the school was well represented at the district contest by an octet and several vocalists. Dorothy Arnold won third place, and Ann Harrison, Pat Rhodes, and the octet all took second places. Jere Hulson, although, not a member of the Glee Club, won first. The Glee Club has sung at several local pro- grams during the year including the Christmas program and Women's Club. A Thanksgiving Banquet was prepared and served by members of the club at which the women faculty members were guests. Miss Hall has aided greatly in the success of the Glee Club this year by her excellent accompaniment. Our director, Mrs. Mace, and the whole school are proud of the Glce Club and its activities. BAND The band is probably the school's most active organization. It has a present membership of about thirty-five. It played'for all the Home Basket- ball games during 1941-42, and for a few this year. Every summer it gives concerts in the city park. In March it gave a concert at the High School. . The marching band, which has a membership of twenty-five, has appeared in a number of parades. It was in the 4th of July parade in Macomb and also the Western Homecoming parade in both 1942-45. During 1941-42 the school was well repre- sented at the District Contest by the band and several soloists.- Jere Hulson, playing the trumpet, and Patsy Hulson, the baritone, won first place, while the baud was third. Jere and Patsy were then entitled to enter the Regional contest where they both won second place. . The Band Boosters' Club is also very active. It has meetings and parties once every month. To the members of this organisation credit for the band uniforms and several horns should bc given. . ' 1 Mr. Jewsbury, our director, should be con- gratulated for the fine work he has done with the High School band. It has been through his fine work and willing Co-operation that the band has Progressed. N' ORE ROTUNDA The Dramatic Club has been very successful this year, under the direction of Miss Anna Larson, The officers for this year were Jr. Zimmerman, President, Shirley Fentem, Vice President, Joanna Messmore, Secretary, Luan Carnahan, treasurer, and Hall Dillon, Reporter. Of course we have the best chance of getting to read the new books first. We have solved the problem of students eating candy in the library. They have to trewt the librarian if they ent there. Cree, was'nt it good! A very interesting play, NAt Your Serviceu, was given before the assembly for Book Week. The Library Staff meets every Tuesday at 12:50. Complaints are made, comments given, and, to break the monotenyb a quiz new and then on books. PEP' GLUE .Formed to promote student attendnncsawt, the ' basketball games, the pep club has for many years, been one of the school s most flourishing organ- izations. ' At the beginning of the year 1942-45 the student body chose three instead of the usual two cheerleaders The ones chosen were: Joanna Messmere, Betty Zimm- erman, and Luan Carnahan, Their outfits consist of white pleated skirts and tights with purple and gold sweaters, The sweaters were bought by the athletic department. The Pep Club chose for its officers: P President----Betty Zimmerman Vice-President-Joanna Messmore Sec-Treasurer-Elva Cuba The organazation conducted meetings at which new yells and motions were tried out. Also the members ordered long sleeved sweaters with Golcherster and an Indian headj the symbol of the school, in purple on the front. The Pep Club attended out of town as well as home games. The main success of our year for the '43 members was helping get a crowd out for the prairie City game. F.F.A.
