SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The Algonquin tribe, Senior class, entered high At first it was all so new better known as the school in 1937. and strange to usg we sat bewildered and dumb. But by the time of the traditional initiation by the sopho- mores, we were well over our fright. we began to settle down in real earnest and e- lected the following officers to carry us through our never-to-be-forgotten freshman year! PresidentKBig Chief! ---------- Mildred Flint Vice-PresidentlBlg Chief's SonJHerschel Haines Secretary --------------------- Freda Fox Treasurerfwampum Keeper! ------ Iris Sherman Student Council --------------- Ruby Webb As you can guess it was no easy task to keep these fifty odd freshman on the straight and narrow way but Miss Peck and Miss Kern, our advisors, were always right there. Our sophomore year showed a small decre- ase in membership among whom was Paul Cobb, one of our most brilliant and talented school- mates. We enjoyed this year very much since school was beginning to seem more like home to us. Our officers for this year were: President ----------------- Glennon Griswold Secretary and Treasurer ---Herschel Haines Student Council ----------- Lester Flynn By the way the Wtern has long since been omitted from Lester. The most important feature of our Junior year proved to be the Junior Senior Banquet. You should have seen the young ladies and gentlemen! We had a lot of fun planning for it too. The theme was nHol1and'. 'Spring Fever' the Junior Class Play, was also an important event in the year. Although we had few parties, we were fast learning the-value of cooperation and the meaning of the word 'workn. The Junior Officers were: President Lester Flynn Vice-President Walter Holstine Secretary Herschel Haines Treasurer Glennon Griswold Student Council Iris Sherman Merle Parks During this year the basketball team rat- ed in the sectional tournament. We feel that our boys played no small part in this achieve- ment. Now we are in our Senior year and time is speeding. We are looking forward to the banquets, the plays, and the publishing of the annual. Our class is very proud of its athletes. I believe it would be safe to say that our outstanding teams have long been dependent up- on the class of 'Ll. Among our outstanding athletes are: Les Flynn, Herschel Haines, Glennon Griswold, and Jim Hunt. Betty Jane Murphy was awarded an 'A' rating in the vocal contest this year and a 'B' rating at the state. We also have sev- eral members in the Glee Club and still more in the band. Of course we have just ask walt Holstine Here's hoping the high school as much as some 'A' students, for his report card. underolassmen enjoy we have in the past. It was on this date that the class of '42, composed of some eighty of the finest examples of young bucks and squaws, arrived as papooses into the settlement at Colchester High. We were warmly recepted by the older tribes and especially the Sophomores, who rightly initiated us. Our first duty was to elect our officers at which we were terribly green in selecting the best chiefs, they were: Big Chief, Dick Rittenhouse, Sec. Marjorie Frakesg Treas. Pauline Webb. There was little excitement during our Sophomore year, but we did give an all tribe skating party which was a real success. Our chieves were Big Chief, Damon Griswold, Big Chief's Daughter, Dorothy Martin, Sec., Marne Shelby, Treasure, Arlin Fentem. This year we have given several dances, had an enthusiastic party, and have a store which has proved very successful. We have made enough money to put on a very nice banquet for our el- ders, for which they should be thankful. This year the following are at our head: Big Chief, Arlin Fentemg Big Chief's Daughter, Pauline Webb, Sec., Gaylord Wayland, Treasure, Nita Carson, Reporter, Vivian McFadden. Kip. Many indoor games were played in the gymnasium and a good time was had by all. we FRESHNEN CLASS HISTORY ln the year of 1940 we have the enrollment of 5A green looking freshmen. Each one of us forgetting what room to go to and at what time. We are now nearing the end of one high school year and finding out what it is all like. F. A. BOYS THE BAND The band is one of the school's most active organizations. It has a present membership of about forty. The marching band consisting of twenty-five members has appeared in a number of parades. They led the Christmas parade at Macomb and Colchester also was among the representatives from Colchester in the Republican Rally parade in Macomb. Our band has played for all the home basketball games and Concerts during the summer. A Band Boosters Club has been organized which through the help of the school was able to buy uniforms and some new instru- ments. Thanks to them. Bill Wayland, a trombonist and Jere Hulson, a trumpetist attended the district contest, both receiving second. Robert Hoar, who is not a member of the band, also won second at the district. For the first time in the history of the band it attended the district contest and won third. Mr. Jewsbury, director, and the school are proud of its progress and success. H MEECUB The HHour of Charmu is a well organized club with Ruby Webb as president. It has forty-two members. A Thanksgiving Banquet was given and the women faculty members were guests. At this three course dinner a program was presented by members of the club. From the large glee club Miss Bryant, our director, chose eighteen girls to represent the school in the District Contest at Beardstown. Here the girls won second. A quartette is a part of the glee club and consists of Nita Carson, Betty Jane Murphy, Freda Fox, and Elva Cuba. On March fifteenth, Ann Harrison and Betty Jane Murphy represented the school at the District Solo Contest, Ann winning third and Betty Jane first, which entitles her to enter the State Contest at Peoria April nineteenth. Mrs. Norma Wold has aided greatly in the success of the glee club this year by her excellent accompanying. Miss Bryant and the school is proud of the glee club and its success. ORE ROTUNDA The Dramatic Club was bigger and better than ever this year. Officers for this year were: Iris Sherman, President, Walter Holstine, Vice-President, Anna Carnahan, Secretary, and Mildred Flint, Treasurer. Monthly meetings at which numerous one-act plays were presented proved very interesting. A Christmas party and a Valentine Day potluck supper were great successes. At Christmas time the club, in cooperation with the glee club, pre- sented a program which was enjoyed by the entire school and many outsiders. The play NPeace Unto Youn was given at this time. The Junior Class Play, uLittle Womenn by John Raviold, was presented on November 8. The cast brought to life Louisa May Alcott's familiar story in all its quaint charm. ' The Stagecraft boys again came through with fine settings which called for expert wielding of saw, hammer and paint brush. The boys proved themselves equal to the task of papering the stage for NLittle Womenn. The Stage managers for the year, Bill Wayland and Lester Flynn, handled the staging capably with the assistance of their stage crews. The Seniors departed from custom by presenting three one-act plays on May 7. They were: Nwienies on Wednesdaysn, nJacob Comes Homen, and WObjections Overruledu. The Make-Up Class, an innovation this year, proved them- selves masters of the act of applying stage make-up by making up all three casts for the senior plays. Members of this class were: Vergene Stewart, Hazel Porter, Ina Porter, Dorothy Martin, Margaret Frisbie, Edna Mae Nelson, Glen Long, and Junior Zimmerman G. A. A. The Girls Athletic Association, a new organization this year, has been under the leadership of Virginia Lee Effland.
