R91 I AUTUMN .... .... 1 1 H25 -1 ...41 ...62 On these pages, the Golden Eagle Staff of T959 has attempted to show the various aspects of school life during all seasons of the year. In the late summer we enrolled in school, all ready for a new school year to begin. The teachers had been at school for a week, preparing for the first day, and the school board nad been making plans for the year. The football team had been spending its afternoons getting in shape tor our annual football game with Almona. Soon the leaves began to turn and fall from the trees. lt was autumn and football season was in full swing. Spending its mornings practicing marching routines for the next week's show was the band, while the annual Fall Frolic kept the Kays and Kayettes busy. The girls bought the tickets to the Student Council sponsored Twirp Dance, and the vocal department was preparing to present a concert. Then the snow fell, coating the bare branches of the trees, and winter was upon us. The halls of CCHS were filled with a holiday air as the Kayettes deco- rated the Christmas tree in the hall, and sang carols in the halls at noon. After Christmas there was a sudden flurry of intensive studying as students prepared for semester exams, followed by a sigh of relief when they were over. The Pep Club girls yelled themselves hoarse at Basket- ball games and wrestling matches. Spon- sored by the Student Council, mixers were held after each home game and wrestling match. The Sno-Ball added a touch of glamour to the winter season as the FFA and FHA decorated on an Iceland theme. The months had flown and suddenly it was spring, the grass and leaves turned green again. Even as they began to get drowsy and wish for summer and vacation, every spare moment was spent by music students practicing for the district and state music festivals. Another sport was under way as the trackmen competed in NWKL events. The junior class presented the seniors with a unforgettable prom, a night to remember, while the seniors began to realize that their days in CCHS were nearing the end as they practiced, with mixed emotions, for their graduation. There are iust a few of the activities that went on in CCHS during the year ln all four seasons, of course, the main reason for school is still work and study which help round out the picture of a year in CCHS. A lot can happen in a year---a lot to remember. The Class of 1959 presents to you this book of memories. H M. ' '05 Q 'Vane ' ' Sass, LATE SUM il sal? Al' Vocal Department Is Busy In Fall Although the vocal department is ac- tive all year, one of their busier seasons is fall . This year for the first time, the girls' glee club sponsored a vocal concert featuring all the vocal groups. This con- cert was held Novermber 21 in the CCHS auditorium . In the spring the vocal department, under the direction of Miss Kay Patterson, prepared for and participated in the district and state music festivals. Each year the various groups rate high in this activity. Girls' glee club, the largest group, consisted of 75 members. Marcia Kyle was president of glee club, the vice-president was Betty Melick, and Carole Carter to' the roll each day as secretary-treasurer Organized three years ago, the boy's glee club now has a membership of 40. The officers were Som Ramey, president, Tom Hamill, vice-president, and Tom Thompson, secretary. A new music organization this year was the mixed chorus. This popular group sang for many events. The 16 members of choral gave a different presentation by sitting informally of the risers while singing. The madrigal chorus, another new mixed group composed of eight members, sang while sitting around a table. The vocal groups have also been featured at open house, Christmas programs CTA, Sorosis Team, prom, graduation, and many others. -- - fs- -f-f 1 . BACK ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: D. WINTER Perhaps the highlight of the entire year for some students was the opening of the long awaited Teen Canteen. Sponsored by the Junior Women's League and located in the basement of the Overman building downtown, the canteen was not directly connected with the school, but it was appreciated by all high school and junior high students. Variety is the keynote of winter activities. New events during the winter included a Kayette sponsored baby contest and the opening of the Teen Canteen. Sports fans were given a doubly exciting treat as basketball and wrestling seasons got underway. F.F.A. and F .H.A. ended the flurry of the Christmas season's activities with the formal Snowball. il Then it was time for semester finals and school activities were subdued for a week of hard study, as students learned thethings they really need to remember. X- UQ -s 26 Winner of the Kayette sponsored baby contest was Tim Hamill. Voters made their choice by patying a penny a vote with all procee s going to CARE. Eagles Slow In Building Year, Drop To Eighth ln NWKL The Eagles' under the coaching of Jay McGaughey, fell to eighth in the North- west Kansas League along with Atwood. Colby lost five regulars through graduation last year, so this was a building year for the team. ln the first game of the season the Eagles downed the Atwood Buffaloes 38 to 33. Colby's hopes fell when Hoxie defeated the Eagles 65 to 56. The bad luck lasted and the next game was dropped to Norton. In the St. Francis game Boyd Evans played for W the first time sincean early football season in- jury, but Colby failed to rate the win column. The following seven games were all lost, putting Colby at the bottom of the league stand- mgs. Colby got off to a bad start in the new season by losing five matches in a row, two to Oberlin, and one to Goodland, Norton, and St. Francis. The inexperienced team progressed as the season went on, a win over Oakley and Atwood broke the losing streak. The last two matches were lost to Hoxie and Goodland. At the four team Christmas tournament at Oberlin, Colby received third. Marvin Schultz, Richard Jones, and Richard Williams all received first places. The wrestlers, with a mixture of ambition, effort, and team spirit, brought credit to both themselves and C.C. H.
