AS Wem As Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds for thirty-three years, he has competently and faithfully performed his varied duties. He has be- come a s much a part of the campus as the Entrance Gates, the Ad- ministration Building, or the Bell Tower. We particularly remember him for his willingness to go beyond the call of duty to undertake any task, great or small, for us. We feel that our thanks to him have too often been insufficient, and we hope that the dedication of this MILESTONE will impart to him our sincere appreciation for his services. REMINISCENG@ES OF Dias Well, here it is! And all for you. You ask, “Was it fun?”” or “Was it worth all the hard work?” We could answer: “No trouble at all;’ or “Work, who worked?” However, to tell the truth, it was trouble and work. The headaches started the minute the editor was elected. Many plans and innumerable decisions had to be made before the layout could be drawn. The excitement of receiving the dummy soon faded as the blank pages only reminded us of the work yet ahead. Picture scheduling, photograph- ing, copy writing, copy typing, copy and picture compiling, art work, and proofreading robbed the editorial staff of many movies and hours of sleep. Still you ask, “Was it worth it?” Well, all griping aside, we, the Editorial staff, have had a great time working on the MILESTONE and we hope you enjoy your annual. YOU'LL CHERISH ALWAYS “What did we do?” You mean you thought the Edi- torial staff had covered it all? Well, one thing’s for sure, we didn’t just pat our feet except when our pounding the sidewalks for hours gave way to a pat- ting. “When did we do this?” All those trips to Florence and the business district of Hartsville weren't for pleasure or to buy clothes, but to sell ads. The typing of ads was one of the lesser, but nonetheless time-consuming jobs we had to per- form. One more thing kept hounding us—'‘Bills.” Unluckily, these aren’t men, but little pieces of paper requesting money. Incidentally, have you taken a look in the ad sec- tion of the 1955 MILESTONE? You'll find a great bunch of advertisers who helped to make the edition of this annual possible. It means teaching them to behave as they do not behave. It is not teach- ing the youth the shapes of the let- ters and the tricks of numbers, and then leaving them to turn their arith- metic to roguery and their literature to lust. It means, on the contrary, training them into the perfect exer- cise and kindly continence of their bodies and souls. It is a painful, con- tinual and difficult work to be done by kindness, by watching, by warn- ing, by precept, and by praise, but above all—by example. —John Ruskin. 92 TEACHING PSs IHRHEIS JeINeIs eS aX 2 htepapiteeses 93 DR: JOSEPR” GS R@BER} O}; il oat One who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the friendship of a host of young people; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who is leaving our school better than he found it; who has never lacked appreciation of the finest qualities of life, nor failed to express it; whose life has been an inspiration; whose memory will remain a blessing. 94 Dake GakUlEANER MISS HELEN E.
