Chieftain 1971 Presented by The Class of 1971 Cohocton Central School Cohocton, New York Volume XXIV In Memoriam Memories are something which may mellow but may never die. These are the kind of memories that we have of Mrs. Esther Hemmer. The memories we have of her are of a strict woman who was wonderful. Mrs. Hemmer helped many students over the largest trouble spot in their school life. Eighth Grade. The students at C.C.S. were very lucky to have such an experienced, most capable person to help them. Mrs. Hemmer taught Eight grade at C.C.S. for 25 years. She also acted as treasurer of the local Teacher’s Association and as Comptroller of the Student Activity Fund. She was a graduate of Oswego Normal School and Buffalo State Teacher’s College. There are few things that anyone can say at this time. The students lost a friend as well as a tremendous teacher. The memories of our Eighth grade teacher are ones all of us hold most precious. Reflections Now that we are leaving C.C.S., it suddenly dawns on us just how much this building has sheltered us. We are leaving the guided paths of high school hallways and will enter a world of independence, opportunity, and responsibility. Some will be entering the hectic world of higher education, while others will join the competitive field of business. But whether you go to college, get a job, or join the service, the carefree days of high school are now over. The final test we face is how well we have prepared ourselves to meet the challenge of the world outside. While eager to meet these challenges, all of us are going to miss the sheltered life within this building. Appreciation Has anyone ever stopped and realized how important it is to have a truly dedi- cated teacher? We feel that we are very lucky to have several here at Cohocton Central School, but there is one in particular that comes into our minds. His name is Mr. Dale English. He has been with us, helping us get the 11 Chieftain out in time for all the dead- lines that must be made. He listened to every one of our ideas with an open mind. Without him to answer our endless questions, we probably would never have gotten this book out on time. So, Mr. English, you know we think you are the greatest, so nothing more needs to be said except “Thank you” and our most sincere apprciations. 4 Appreciation Some may think it strange that a class has two appreciations, but we have another male teacher that we would like to express gratitude to. He helped us out over the rough spots when we needed someone to turn to. He sat us down many a time for some serious talks. He told us why everyone thought we were rotten, but for the first time, he was the one who told us what was good about us as a whole. He is known for his dry humor and sparkling personality. The sun shone when Cohocton made Dedication MRS. KATHLEEN FAIRBROTHER Every year, the Seniors sit down with various ideas about who should receive this high honor. Amont the candidates, there were many who made large impressions on us. Of course, we cannot use them all, so the 1971 Senior Class has chosen one, one who is very close to us. This teacher has the ability to be kind, patient and above all extremely under- standing. She spends her teaching hours with the elementary children, and all her spare time trying to help guide the Seniors. She is one in a million, and Cohocton Central School is lucky to have her. We could go on and on about this lady, but there is no sense in repeating ourselves. If you know her, you’ll understand what we are trying to say. Therefore, the graduating class of 1971, dedicates our yearbook and our love to our advisor, Mrs. Kathleen Fairbrother. Yearbook Staff Editor, T. Cragg; Assistant Editor, S. Those with draft cards included: P. Wolcot, S. Hoover, M. Sabins, J. Kunz, S. Daniels, D. Cleland, V. Avery, M. Smalt, N. Carey, S. Wallace, T. Kiefer, F. Benson, T. Gilman, K. Avery, J. Sick, P. Linkenfelter, M. Castle, T. Clute, S. Hoag, V. Kuhn, M. Schnieder, G. Fairbrother, D. Conrad, B. Fleishman, C. Goranson, S. Paige, M. Rawleigh, and E. Young. After nine years of basic, advanced basic, and intermediate training, we entered our Freshman year with fourteen of the original bunch and nine new recruits. (The other fourteen had all gotten honorable discharges along the way.) The new inductees that were transferred into our barracks were: B. Burns, C. Klug, T. Cragg, Michael Schnieder, M. Delio, A. Scriviner, W. Hamilton, J. Hart, D. Smith, and R. Polmanteer. Our first military event was, ‘The Psychedelic Happening”. The officers were: Dave Conrad, Captain, Gary Fairbrother, Lieutenant, Paul Wolcott, Sargeant, and Jim Sick as Paymaster. We were posted under Mrs. Kaye Wood, our General. When we entered our Sophomore year of training, the troops suggested having two so- cial get-to-gethers. One of the greatest was the “Battle of the Bands”. That was some get- to-gether! Needless to say, Headquarters agreed to both of the social events. The entire year was a success. The officers of our squadron: Jim Sick as our Captain, Michelle Schnieder as Lieutenant, Charlene Klug as Secretary, Sally Wallace as our trusted Pay- master; were all pleased with the troops efforts. As time passed, so did we. Third year training caused much excitement in the troops. Officers appointed were; Jim Sick as Top Brass, Nancy Carey as his Vice, Charlene Klug remained as Chief secre- tary, and “Money-grabbing Bruce”, as we used to call him, who was assigned to the brig for not collecting our monthly dues, was the questionable Paymaster. The troops, with two new transferees, Jeff and Paul Van Caeseele, received class rings, which were the most important part of their new equipment, and to every G.I. Junior. We staged our wildly successful play, “Grandad Goes Wild”, with Colonel J.R. Molyneux directing. We were supposed to go on tour with it but the Colonel was sure that we shouldn’t give the public too much of a good thing. The play was a big boost to our payroll. In May of that same year, the biggest social event on Cohocton was put into active duty, our Prom, entitled, “A Single Rose”, set in military color scheme of Navy blue and white. The dignitaries of the Prom were; Gary Fairbrother, and Charlene Klug, as king and queen. In lower rank were; Betsy Burns, Virginia Avery, Bruce Fleishman, and Mike Schnieder. Saying every- one looked beautiful would be inadequate. The gym had never seen so much color, ex- citement and beauty before. This night will be a deep imprinted memory to every good trooper. During our third year of training, our first General had left us. Before the end of the term we were happily assigned to Mrs. Kathleen Fairbrother, our new commanding offi- cer. She has been with the troops ever since. Our last year of training at Cohocton Central School is almost drawing to an end. We could go on and on about our recent events, but we feel they are all so fresh in our minds. One of the most interesting events was that of the war the Seniors had with the Juniors. Of course, the Seniors won over the Juniors. After all, how could the Juniors even think that they could win over the mighty force of C.C.S.? The Senior Trip is next on our charts. This is a time when the whole class goes ba- nanas. Next is Class Night, which is all meant in fun, the Graduation, the most serious of all the endeavors the troops will ever do in training. Finally, “that class”, the class of 1971, will be gone. We are going to miss all our friends and classmates and even the faculty. This is our last year. It just doesn’t seem pos- sible. The years have just gone so fast. Yes, soon it will be all over, just when it was start- ing to make sense. So on behalf of our class, The Class of ‘71, we would like to say thank you for everything. 26 Our World Traveler International Fellowship Juniors J. Meek N. Sauerbier S. Delio J. Wagner R. Mark D. Who can ever forget “poem day” or “current events” day. Though you may have left us Mrs. Gray, what you taught us will never leave. You in- stilled in us a love for learning that will always be remembered. It is impossible to ever replay in words what you have given us, but Mrs. Gray, we hope that our farewell to you in the 71 Chieftain will express our thanks and appreciation to you as one who will not be forgetten.
