Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1967 volume:

DEDICATION For 25 years students at Cohocton Central have been taking their problems to one of the most dedicated and wise men around school--Mr. Joseph Spas. He has counseled us, taught us, disciplined us, and fathered us; and now we dedicate the 1967 Chieftain to him. Besides being our mentor and guide, Mr. Spas has taught us well. He is well prepared for the job, having attended Geneseo Normal, Buffalo State, and Alfred University. Before coming to Cohocton in 1942 he taught in rural area schools. He taught 7th grade at C. C. S. for 12 years and then became Social Studies teacher in 1954. This year he has definitely claimed the title of guide--as Guidance Coun- selor at our school. He is active in community affairs, having helped organize the Cohocton chapter of the International Fellowship and directing the Adult Education Program. This is only partial reward for services rendered, Mr. Spas, because we can't begin to thank you for all you have done for us. You are always there with a ready word of advice and a helping hand and have been for 25 years and we hope you will be for another 25. APPRECIATION It always helps to have an experienced person to guide one over the rough spots in life. In school, as in life, there are trouble spots and the Eighth grade is a traditional one. We at C. C. S. are lucky to have a most experienced, most capa- ble teacher to help us. Mrs. Esther Hemmer has taught eighth grade at C. C. S. for 22 years. During that time she has helped innumerable students prepare for the transition from elementary to High School. But even with this full-time job Mrs. Hemmer finds time to act as treasurer of the local Teacher's Association and as Comptroller of the Student Activity Fund. Mrs. Hemmer, a remarkable teacher, was also an avid student and is a graduate of Oswego Normal School and Buffalo State Teachers College. Mrs. Hemmer, as we end our years here at C. C. S. , we do so knowing that they were a little smoother, a little easier because of you. In this appreciation we are saying Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. 3 gggB' ¥% 0 STAFF Editor.......................m. Hoover Assistant Editor.............J. Folts Business Manager . . . . Wheaton This Has Not Changed The opportunities and horizons facing the youth of this nation are limitless scholar- ships, both public and private, are increasing each year. Job opportunities are greater in number than at any other time of history. Education is not only for a select few but rather for all, regardless of body and mind inequities. Loans by individual banks and by state and federal governmental lending agencies have made it easier for students to study now and pay later. But, as always it is the individual that counts. He is the one that makes the difference. He must have a burning desire, the willingness to sacrifice for, the ambition to work for the fortitude to withstand, disappointments, frustrations, anxieties, when the going gets rough. This has not changed. 6 FACULTY Mrs. Bonnie Feely Kindergarten Miss Helen Martin Kindergarten Mrs. Doris Dickinson First Grade Mrs. Rebecca Kramer First and Second Grade Mrs. Lois Lasher Second Grade Mrs. Marion Gray Fifth Grade Miss Julia Ryan Sixth Grade Mr. Merle Wheaton Seventh Grade Mrs. Esther Hemmer Eighth Grade 7 FACULTY Mr. Ellsworth Tripp Athletic Director Mrs. Virginia Tripp Music Director Mrs. Grace Fox English Mr. George Tripp Industrial Arts Mr. James Davis Mathematics Chemistry Physics Miss Gloria Mihalko Home Economics Mrs. Helen Holroyd Biology Science 9 Business Arithmetic Mr. Frederick Wood Social Studies Mrs. Lucille Rowland Business Mr. Jack Crabtree Driver Education Mrs. Ida Ackley Latin 8 FACULTY AND STAFF Mr. Joseph Spas Mrs. Janet Bake man Guidance Librarian Mrs. Florence Feely Nurse Mrs. Nedra McElroy Art Mrs. Ruth Lynch Dental Hygienist . C. S. Whoever would have dreamed The day we made our tearful start. That the time would ever come When we'd be fearful to depart From these protecting halls and sheltering walls Which throughout the years did to us impart A feeling of security and a sense of belonging That has strangely warmed our heart. But with the Class of '68 So close upon our heels. We realize 'twould be futile To even tender our appeals. So now we know for certain How the baby fledgeling feels. When thrust abruptly from his nest To cope with this world of weals. Not only to this lovely edifice , Will we have to say farewell, But we'll also have to bid good-bye To all of it personnel. We realize that the dedication Of faculty, and staff as well, Has done its utmost to enable us In our chosen fields, to excel. So now we leave this institution of learning. Grateful that the task it willingly undertook Is finished; and now success or failure Rests entirely with us--for we all partook Of the bountiful feast it so freely profferred. So as we take that last fond, departing look. We'll always cherish its hallowed memories As herein recorded in this book! The Class of '67 89
