The 1965 CHIEFTAIN VOLUME XVIII PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS COHOCTON CENTRAL SCHOOL COHOCTON, NEW, YORK DEDICATION MISS ZITELLA WOOD Often we, as seniors, think only about high school experiences, and neglect to recall memories of our grade school education. Yet this period of life, more than any other, sees the shaping of our character and the formula- tion of our life’s destiny. In these vital years grade teachers exert a tremendous influence on children. We have on our faculty a person who has taught in Cohocton longer than any other teacher in history. She has seen multitudes of classes pass through her room, and has shown selfless dedication to teaching and patient understanding of her pupils throughout the years. She is a shining example of the kind of teacher all students should have. We, therefore, the Class of 1965, dedicate this “Chieftain” to our fourth grade teacher. Miss Zitella Wood. APPRECIATION MRS. LILLIAN WELLS We, the Class of 1965, express our grateful appreciation to Mrs. Lillian Wells for her many years of service to our school. She has shown deep interest in students, both personally and as classes, and she has al- ways been willing to help us in our problems. Her cheerfulness has made many a school day lighter for both teachers and students. W I-------1 Z I is this book? ▼ ▼ A A J. A. A It is the rec- ord of our school for a year, a portray- al of the people and events that made Cohocton Central uniquely what it was in the year 1964-1965. This Chief- tain is the result of many hours of la- bor, and into it we have put something of our own beliefs and attitudes, as well as rows of photographs. It is in the little village of Cohocton, in a beautiful valley of up- state New York, in a great and magnificent nation, the United States of America. In this corner of the land schools have taught many genera- tions of young people about the world in which they live. 5 WHERE CCS has a long line of predecessors. In 1810 the township's first school was opened in the cabin of Jonas Cleland, south of the future village. Sophia Trumbull from Naples was hired as teacher, for board and $1 a week. The direct ancestor of the present Cohocton school was the District 5 school- house erected in 1820 diagon- ally across from the ceme- tery. By 1845 this had fallen into disrepair, and a new one- story frame structure re - placed it. District 5 school. South Main Street; built 1869, de- stroyed by fire 1889. In 1869 a two-story wooden building arose on the same site. In 1871 the trustees petitioned the Board of Regents to form a Union Free School, and in the fall of 1880 it was established. In February, 1889 the school burned down, and on the same loca- tion a fourth schoolhouse was built, this time of bricks fired in Wallace, at a cost of $4,000. Per- mission was granted by the state in 1895 to grant the Regents High School Diploma. Study Hall of Cohocton High School, 1889-1934. Sixty or so years ago the Cohocton Union School had seven teachers, including a principal who also taught high school sub- jects. Grades were placed two to a room in the six-room struc- ture; there was no cafeteria or gymnasium. Tutition was charged according to age, rang- ing from 20 p to 30£ a week, for out-of-district pupils. Teachers' wages started at $1. Cohocton Union High School, South Main Street; built 1889, demolished 1934. 6 (This and above taken by August Zeh, 1934.) WHERE In the township of Cohocton there were, un- til centralization took effect, twelve independent school districts. Two of these were combined grade and high schools: District 3, the North Cohocton-Atlanta school, and District 5, the Cohocton village school. The rest were one-or two-room buildings, taught by one teacher and housing all eight grades. Four of these are now converted into private homes, the others are either vacant or dismantled. Kirkwood rural school about the turn of the century. Still standing on the River Road. Construction of the present school, spring, 1934. Left, looking east; right, looking north across Park Avenue. On May 27, 1934 the cor- nerstone for a new school was laid. The building was ready for occupancy in the fall of the same year, having cost a total of $110,000. The construction was a WPA project under the Roosevelt administration. In 1942 the rural dis- tricts were consolidated with the village school district, and Cohocton Union High School became Cohocton Central School. In 1952 two large addi- tions were made to the existing plant, at a cost of $250,000, containing classrooms, cafe- teria, shop, and locker rooms. Present school newly completed, September, 1934. Dunn 1944-1960 1960- 8 WHO are the people of Cohocton Central School? They range from Senior to Kindergartner and from Principal to Custodian. They may be young, or they may be adult, but each and every one plays an important part in life at our school. 9 Lawrence J. Dunn, Principal; W. Merle Wheaton, Vice-Principal. PRINCIPALS PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: WHO IS EDUCATED? According tothe dictionary, education is the act of imparting or acquiring knowledge through systematic instruction and train- ing. In our world today, we must be able to implement this with something more. We must deal honorably and reasonably with others, regardless of their status in society. Further, whatever the cir- cumstance, be it fortune or mis- fortune, we must bear the burden of life and not be spoiled by suc- cess or discouraged by failure. Socrates said: “Those who have a character which is in ac- cord, not with one of these things, but with all of them, are educated; possessed of all the virtues.” LAWRENCE J. CLASS HISTORY In September of 1961 we entered our Freshman year, ready to commence high school studies and fund-raising activities. Our first dance, '’65 Goes Hawaiian,” in March, 1962, was complete with leis and palm trees, giving C.C.S. the atmosphere of a South Sea Isle. The class sold brownies at soccer games and candy at basketball games the fall and winter of our Sophomore season. The Country Ramblers furnished music for a “backwoods hoedown” in November, “Hillbilly Holiday.” “Spring Fever” hit the school in March with our second dance, a record hop. No Boys Allowed” was the title of our hit Junior play, on October 4, 1963, in which a bunch of boys crashed a female slumber party. In November the hens were out to catch them- selves roosters for the “Sadie Hawkins” Dance. The Class of 65 checked coats for the Dairymen's Dinner in January. On May 8, 1964, we danced to the Serenaders of Honeoye at our Junior Prom, “Moonlight and Roses.” In July and August of 1964 the class sold advertising space in the “Chieftain” totaling $1308. A busy senior year was opened with an “Oldies but Goodies” record hop in September. Next came the annual magazine drive, which netted a total of $1833, and a candy drive at Thanksgiving which brought in $725. All these activities were interspersed by difficult but exciting work on the yearbook, which was packed off to the publishers in March and received two months later. The culminating events of our school lives occurred in May and June, 1965. On May 20-24 we took our fabulous Senior trip to New York City and the World’s Fair, and on June 25 w,e reached the summit of graduation.
