AFSers have too often the tendency to see everything through one color planes. I ' ll try and be objective in my evaluation of the U.S.A. This way will be the best for me to make clear my ideas and perhaps for you to learn something new about us. My first observation was the similarity between Americans and Europeans. Everybody has stere- otypes in mind like the gruff German, suave Frenchman or lazy Latin American. After a while all the masks go away and you discover the real person with the same feelings and behavior as you. What about the differences? The first would be the fact that American people more than in Europe like to be busy. It ' s almost an honor to have too many things to do at the same time. Maybe it ' s the fast American way of life. Another characteristic of the U.S.A. is independence. This feeling is leading to the disintegration of family life. The father works all the time, the mother has her occupations, and the children are out. Europe is getting like this, but not as much. These are some of my reactions. I ' d like to thank the town of Cohasset. Its school, and all the peo- ple who made my experience happy. Friendship was the constant factor of this year. Thank you one more time. Philippe 92 PHILIPPE GOSSERIEG — FROM BELGIUM DAVID KEEFE U R S T U D E N T Dear Friends, To explain my AFS year: Of fun-boredom, of frustration-enlightenment, of un- derstanding-conflict, of learning-teaching, of apathy and love. To put one year of living and evaluate all the things I came to understand about myself and people in 25 words or less is impossible. The year has made an indeli- ble influence on me, but I ' ll never have a complete inventory on all that I have learned. Being placed with a new family, friends and school where they look different, act differently and speak differently . . . then finding out that maybe they aren ' t so different. Possibly because of all this, I can now look at myself and hopefully at other peo- ple with a little more understanding. ON EXISTENCE We travel along the road of life; hardly knowing what we are, yet always daring to be something; seldom saying what we mean, but never afraid to have meaning; sometimes failing in our endeavors, though never tempted to cease trying; seeking satisfaction at every level, yet never defining happiness; often apologizing for our existence, while realizing that life is its own excuse. But the real joy of our otherwise insignificant efforts is that we are never quite satisfied to be on the lef: or right, or in the middle of that road. We are always attempting to change its direction. by Allan Ashley-Pitt 95 96 1. L. DeVito, J. Marcella, S. Randall, 2. M. Marcella, L. Goodrirh ' 98 CIVICS CLUB L D. Kurtz. 5. Bern. M. Lynch. J.
