(Swineburne) This really is out of sight: the garrulous class of 71 aboard Capt. Skip Carter ' s newly designed nuclear submarine, Sheila, right off Sandy Beach. Who would have though of it 30 years ago — but of course the setting ' s perfect. From here we can see both the new CHS designed by that famous Equadorian architect, our own AFS student, Miryam Carrion (and that old marked water tower — remember the BEAR?). No doubt many of us are reminiscing about our times at Sandy: weekend nights, after yearbook meetings, getting locked in, or out? Ah, those were the — well, let ' s not spend our time looking back; the year 2001 offers us many surprises. So many faces that haven ' t been around for ages. Of course there are those who have remained right in CHS. Why there ' s Biff Broderick raving about his football team — maybe not that much has changed after all! Hi! Eileen, Ida, Mary G. and Miss Tewks, all faculty members, seem quite involved in discussing teacher-student educational procedures with Jean Lahage. It has been rumored that Jean will be initiated as the first woman president of Cal Tech — provided California doesn ' t sink before fall. That laughter sounds familiar. Why it ' s Nancy W., Randee, and Hilja. All three, now happily skiing on their billionaire husbands ' resorts, just flew in on Sherril ' s airlines from the Alps. Oh wow! Thanks for the free lift tickets! Too bad Janet, Nancy K., Gina, and Gayle can ' t make it. They did send a postcard. Evidently the four world travelers met by coincidence in Cape Elizabeth, South Africa with Jan and her family. It ' s easy to pick out the business oriented crowd in their past winter cruise wear. Brian Keating, Postmaster General; Robert Kelleher, head of AT T; Joanne, president of Hood Dairy Co.; Jeanita and Nadine, manager and owner of Cottonworth Department store; Janice Gates, Proprietor of Gates; Hermon Maynard of Inflammable Maynard Firetrucks; Eric Pearson, President of Chrysler Corporation, have all congregated around the heated pool to buy stock in the growing extensions of Eric Gjesteby Co., Inc., electronic equipment. What is Ted Macklin doing with that extra strength nutriment bottle? Oh, that must be what Skinny sent his apologetic regret message in: Do not disturb. Peacefully Tuna fishing. Ted found it drifting off the Bahamas when he was making a test run in his 100 foot schooner. Ted also reports that he witnessed Richard Guilfoyle winning America ' s 30th cup sailing Tweetie of the Sea. As well as the establishment people, our class has its share of the free generation whose roots dote back to the 60 ' s. Scott and Regie are still discovering America, while Sam, Paula, Fred, and Tiny are enjoying the Woodstock Nations in their cabins built by Danny Davis. A few showed up in spite of the hassel. Bill Judd, on his permanent vacation, has been taking bets that Mike won ' t hit Minot ' s light with his franey golf ball. In spite of his grey hairs, Mike still has a mean swing. There ' s a crowd gathering ' round Chris Jordan, that old time pool shark from Topper ' s pool hall days. By the way, where is John? Still searching for that perfect wave, but he ' s so sincere! Luckily Terry and Julie have volunteered their professional nursing abilities to anyone who feels a little seasick. Doctors Tom Cifrino, and Jim Higgins, brain surgeon, also are at hand. Billionarie Chris Fink, who underwent a necessary operation, will testify to Jim ' s perfection in brain transplants. Too bad Cindy N., now a lab technician, caught a virus during her work and couldn ' t make it. All for the cause of science though. Without their numerous children, the mothers must be truly relaxing. There are Nancy D., Shelly, Vicky, Rocky, Carol, and Karen talking to John Cogill about his State police job in Maine. Mary O. is expounding on how she ' s found the best way to bring up kids — like drops. Kathy G. and Moira have both married football stars. With the recent trade they will no doubt be seeing each other frequently. Barbara and Jack, both 5 th Avenue super shrinks, are bewildered over the cryptic situatons of Gary Sisson — he ' s still a bachelor! Gary, not quite as concerned, claims he ' s having a ball! I ' ve a tip that Agi Streeter is really the undercover agent sent here to keen an eye on Kathy England, new national director of Women ' s Lib, who ' s been quite out- spoken on many subjects including gov ' t discrimination in employment. Neither seem too concerned and are enjoying the entertainment. Why there ' s Cindy W. over there now. Cindy with her Cliff House experience, offered to serve. We ' re fortunate, too, to have the famous cuisinaire, Donny Davis, fly in from his Riviera restaurant. The lob- ster and frog legs are perfect! Hey, Johnny Carson ' s band leader has just flown in. Imagine. Cohasset was once lucky enough to have John Hunt in its own band! Before dinner, the stage will be lit up by our ageless Sheila modeling clothes A la Nanci. A highlight, no doubt, will be an after-dinner preview of a new film produced by Kerr} 7 , scenery by Tom Sinopoli and Phil Rose, and Starring the scintillating Kay Haskell. How could such a combination miss? Even Rowena, who turned down the lead, expects it to be a success. Twelve Oscar ' s are enough for her — why be greedy? I thought it was a little too quiet. Betsy has been given Bucky private dance and karate lessons. They have both emerged and begun to practice on their classmates — Woops! There goes l ' il Al Coblentz. Phew! Too bad Cohasset ' s Thorn Farrell, now a captain of the Merchant Marines, just set off one of his infamous stink bombs — this time made with carnations direct from Sestito Enterprises, a near monopoly of Florists shops from coast to coast. Where ' s Ralph Nader now? Ann Tyeryar offered to write up the press release for Scott Settino ' s speech, A way to Peace, but I guess her new position as chief stenographer of the Supreme Court de- tained her. Since that roving rostrum is free and the Beatles have been turned down to a minimum by our aging colleagues, I ' ll take this opportunity to plug the world organi- zations, Orphans Anonymous, which I hope our class will continue to support. Oh-oh, I better hurry. There goes Kathy England with a twenty-foot list of announcements to make. Martin 111 THOUGHTS FROM SOUTH AFRICA My year in Port Elizabeth, South Africa has been more rewarding than could ever be imagined. In living here, I have learned a great deal about this beautiful and unique country, its strange customs and friendly people. Through sharing experiences with many persons of various backgrounds, I have also come to a better understanding of myself. A wonderful two-week vacation was spent in Cape Town with Paul Middelmann and his family. A first class tour of this georgous city in- cluded the picturesque University of Cape Town campus and a trip up Table Mountai n in a cable car to view the Cape of Good Hope, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, all in one panorama. Philippa Hulett, a Collegiate- boarder and a national surfing champion, invited me to visit her at Cape St. Francis, the home of the perfect wave in The Endless Summer . The water temperature was 80°. But AFS is not travelling and excitement and smiling and fun. The school-work here has been pretty tough, and I ' ve had really keep my nose to the grindstone just to stay above water. Sometimes I met people who were anti-America, and it seemed they always has a caustic criticism on any subject we discussed. Sometimes I felt like crying because I thought I couldn ' t stand the strain any longer; yet sometimes I was so happy that I would wish the year would never end. These feelings and problems are just as much a part of an AFS year as all the good times, but working to make it a good year, a successful and worthwhile year, has made it an even more rewarding experience. It has really opened my eyes to the world and to life in general. As they say in Arrikaans, Dit was ' n baie aangename jaar gewees! Love, Jan 112 My mother and father and two brothers in Ecuador It was summer when I arrived in Cohasset, a beauti- ful and little town with people ready to give their friendship and to help me to improve my English that at that time was terrible. Then school came and with it the little-big problem of my English, with the kindness of the kids and teach- ers the communication with people was not hard. Soon I made a lot of friends and, with homework to do and a series of activities, I felt as if my own city My birthday party My A.F.S. family here, the Henderson ' s had grown and had gained more people. Now we are in winter with the beautiful snow that I will never get tired of. Christmas and New Year are over, too, and the only thing I am afraid of is seeing the end of the year come. I would like to thank the A.F.S. Cohasset Chapter, my family, A.F.S. club in school and the penny day givers who made this year so full of experiences and joy.
