To a gentleman whom we respect and admire . . . Your devotion to education and your sincere efforts to deal with your students, treating each as an individual, have brought you beyond the role of teacher to that of guiding friend. The patience and understanding with which you handle even the seemingly most unimportant matters are an even higher tribute to your fine character. Through you, we have gained a better understanding of true humility, scholarship, and friendship. These rare qualities so consistently exhibited and so seldom appreciated are the very things for which we will remember you.
