TESSAHOC OF 1966 [■ ' OR K W OR () As we, the Seniors, finish our journey through Cohasset High, we leave behind many unforgettable and precious memories. As lowly freshmen, we crept about the corridors, afraid to speak in overtones. As sophomores, we were beginning to understand the school rules and regulations. As juniors, we became more competent and assured, for we were part of the upperclass. Today, the faculty are no longer strangers, but friends. Life at C.H.S. has been the stepping stone from childhood into the waiting years of life. What is in store for us is unknown, but one thing is certain: If we make use of the opportunities provided by the school, we will be prepared for a successful future. To preserve these fond memories of life at Cohasset High, we present to you, students and faculty, the 1955 TESSAHOC in an attempt to portray the events as we lived them. DEDICATION Because we ' d like to show, by just a small token, our deepest admiration for a man who is one of the first in our hearts as representing understanding, we, The Class of 1955, dedicate this, our yearbook, to Mr. Donald McNeil. We knowyou, Mr. McNeil, as having been vice principal of C. H. S. for the last four years, as having taught here for ten years, and as being a competent and efficient worker for and with us. But, beyond this, we ' ll remember you for those times when we ' d come in to find you changing a raspberry color to neutral and then changing it back again; when we ' d walk in for a late pass only to see a cover flying through the air; to see some water boiling and freezing at the same time; to see a can collapsing or a beaker or bottle bursting. All these things are your way of teaching us. It is to make us teach ourselves by wonder- ing how and why any and all of these things happen. Remembering some more, we ' ll think of the all-around fellow you are, for no matter what we seem to do, you ' re connected in some way. At all our sport activities you ' re present, ready to help and cheer us on. In the regular school day we ' re bound to see you, either at the office or from behind a cloud of smoke or some indescribable odor. Most of all, though, we ' ll think and wonder some more at your ability to set us all at ease, with your easy manner and dry, many times unexpected, humor. Thanks, many times over, to one of our truest and most unforgettable, friends. You probably know more about us than many of our friends do, for you seem to have an unexcelled quality of listening and understanding. As a teacher, you ' ll always be remembered for your exactness, so helpful to us in all our future jobs and experiences. As an advisor, you kept us ever level headed and straight in our dealings as a class and as individuals. We shall never forget, in the wide world now opening to us, your example of gentleness, kindness, decency, and love. We hope to meet more people in the future just like you, but we hope, too, that you never have to suffer through another gang of seniors like us in your future. Thanks, always, for putting up with us. CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1951 a group of twenty-five anxious freshmen began their long journey through high school. For leaders along this path they had Hope Truesdell, Marcia James, Nick Buckeridge, Paul Restuccia, Janice Cowdrey, Russell Pratt, Bernadette Shyne, and Edward Wadsworth as their officers. Edward Wadsworth, Paul Restuccia, Walter Howe, Marcia James, Betty Campbell, and Janice Cowdrey were Student Council Repre- sentatives. Class activities had their start in our junior year, when we chose our class rings, held two dances, sent a member to Girls ' State, and elected some members to the National Honor Society. The Icicle Hop, our first social, was a shimmering preview of the biggest event of the year, the Junior Prom. In a South Sea Island setting, this prom was a huge success. A lovely queen and handsome king were chosen, Marcia James and Brad Tite, to crown the evening ' s glory. In March, Diane DeCosta, Janice Cowdrey, Marcia James, Hope Truesdell, Russell Pratt, and Edward Wadsworth were given membership in the National Honor Society, one of the highest honors that a student can attain. Marcia James, in June, was chosen by the American Legion Auxiliary as Girls ' State Representative from Cohasset High. Gertrude Bresnahan became head cheerleader that year, and Janice Cowdrey won the Rotary trophy award in field hockey. Amid this suc- cess, Edward Wadsworth was the proud receiver of the Harvard Book and winner, from Cohasset, of an international math contest. In this he ranked seventh highest out of twenty thousand participants. Our high school was in fourteenth place. September brought our senior year and the incredible realization that we were seniors. This year brought more honors and awards, as well as more duties. Our biggest task was the production of this yearbook, and the job was put under the direction of Nick Buck- eridge, Janice Cowdrey, Marcia James, Paul Restuccia, Jack Smith, Helen Beal, Gertrude Bresnahan, Loretta Leone, Diane DeCosta, Hope Truesdell, Dianne Hathaway, and Betty Campbell. This year ' s dance The Sadie Hawkins, was a regular dogpatch success with a va- riety of costumes. Paul Restuccia was elected the president of Student Council, Marcia James, captain of the marshals, and Gertrude Bresnahan, again, head cheerleader. In a contest for representative to Good Government Day, Robert Bresnahan was chosen by the school with his subject of Juvenile Delinquency. Rotary trophy awards were given to Paul Restuccia for football and Carolyn Ferreira for field hockey. Janice received the award of Daughters of American Revolution. The proceeds of a box lunch sale and those received at the Fishermen ' s Banquet netted a considerable increase in our treasury. The finale to our large scale of high school activities was the senior play, Mother is a Freshman a success — with a surprise ending we ' ll never forget! We dislike the words class history, for they make us realize the change we are about to make, but knowing it must come, we are ready to face it. The class of ' 56 has always been a good supporter of other school activities be- sides. Through the years we have consistently had a good number of representatives in all sports and clubs. The Juniors are proud of the record they have made through high school, and look for- ward to their senior year, as they have proven themselves able leaders. CLUB MA Y AZTEC A The senoritas y senores of the dub Mayaztcca have made and sent scrapbooks and boxes of clothes to an orphanage in Honduras this year. The fudge sales and annual Christmas party have been successful. The club ' s picnic was held at Whitney Woods — how the tamalcs burnt our tongues! This put the finish- ing touches on a happy year. Adios hasta el sigiente ano! CLUB LAFAYETTE Le Club Lafayette is primarily an organization to help others in France who are in need. Each year this club sends Christmas and other miscellaneous boxes to an orphanage in France. Besides the annual selling of candy bars, the club, last year, sponsored a movie for the whole school. Thanks to all the school, for your co-operation in our activities. CHORUS DRAMATIC CLUB Cohasset High School, last year, played host to the Drama Festival, while presenting Th ? Importance of Being Ernest. This year they will go to Franklin with She Stoops to Conquer. We hope that they will have better luck and as much fun. Good luck, kids! STUDENT COUNCIL NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY To be a member of the National Honor Society is the highest honor which may be con- ferred upon a student for his scholastic rating. A member is chosen for the following qualities: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The ceremony in which the Honor Society members receive their tiny gold pins, symbols of the truth of learning, is truly inspiring and beautiful. LIBRARY CLUB COHASSET HIGH SCHOOL VS. SCHOOL SPIRIT School spirit — two vet) important words in the running of Cohasset High School. But just what is school spirit and where does it come from? In any kind of weather (snow, rain, etc.) we see our football players run- ning as a team down to the thirty-yard line, the twenty, the ten, they ' re over. And now for the point after the touchdown; everybody is tense, and clinging to their neighbors ' jacket, which will be torn in about five seconds. Silence pre- vails. But now, pandemonium breaks loose; yelling, screaming, and cheering descend from you, the students of this school, because you are proud of your football team, the ceam of which you feel yourself a part. But, is this the only place, on Milliken Field, where you can show your loy- alty to C. H. S. ? If your answer is yes, you do not possess what I call school spirit. In my opinion this element called loyalty or school spirit should be displayed even more in the classroom. We must remember that our school is not judged primarily on the winning team in sports, but by the winning team in scholar- ship. To make a well-rounded school we need l) loyalty to our duties, such as homework, reporting to a teacher, etc., and 2) loyalty to our athletic teams. From this loyalty you, the students, will have the biggest bond of school spirit you can handle. Instead of having Cohasset High School versus School Spirit, let ' s have the two combined into one mass. It ' s up to you now; School Spirit COMES Front The Students at C. H. S. MARCIA JAMES Literary Editor TESSAHOC 1955 J COHASSET Kingston Scituate Marshfield Pembroke Norwell .. Duxbury Hanover This year the hockey team had a large turn out. There were 17 girls in all. Marcia James was the timer, scorer, and manager. The starting line up was the following: Jane Wilmore, Carolyn Ferreira, Janice Cowdrey, Lillian Kealy, Helen Beal, Carol Hur- ley, Jerry McLaughlin, Jane Waterman, Priscilla Bailey, Judy In- gram, and Linda Horton. Subs were Dorothy Norton, Robin Beaman, Nancy Gray, Emily Chaisson, Bonny Edmonds, Roberta Skehan, and Ann Chesworth. The Senior Class wishes Miss Smith and the hockey team the best of luck next year! The Softball team had pretty rough sledding in ' 54, but in spite of the scores a marked improvement over last year ' s team can be seen. The team was made up of the following girls: Joyce Brown, Jean Silvia, Helen Beal, Carol Hurley, Jane Wilmore, Enid Dwin- nells, Betty Bailey, Susan Davis, Ldlian Kealey, Roberta Lawson, Justine Hall, Priscilla Fraser, Barbara Reed, and Wilfredine Chiasson. Marcia James was the scorer for the team. It ' s been a rush, a lot of unforeseen difficulties and hard times, but we wouldn ' t have missed this opportunity for the world! Laurie and Gert typed till their fingers had blisters and their minds were reeling. Betty was nagged and hounded till she was ready to blow that lovely red top of hers and throw things to the winds. Bouncing, kicking, and batting their way through this year were Jack and Helen, with score books galore. Hope ' s the greatest! On business she was a whiz . . . and if she didn ' t do some mighty high traveling! Dianne Hathaway walked miles and miles around this school selling books, while Diane DeCosta untangled our tousled finances. Writing and revising was Marcia ' s job. She did so much with our scattered material that she ' ll never want to be a journalist now. Paul will be stamping pictures (or passes) for a long time to come. He tried calming us, but to no avail. And as for Janice and Nick — well, that ' s better left unsaid. Good luck, Juniors, and don ' t even think you can have as much fun as we did — in anything! So long . . .
