The Yearbook Staff of the COHASSET HIGH SCHOOL THE TESSAHOC For WE the class of 1953 dedicate our yearbook to William Ripley, Jr., who for eleven years has been the captain of our ship of knowledge. We now realize that he has guided us safely through the treacherous channels of ignorance into the broad waters of self-reliance. Our friend and counselor dur- ing these formative years, he has earned our fond respect. His understanding guidance and sincere interest in the welfare of each of us we recognize and appreciate. With his discerning judgment and helpful suggestions we have charted our courses. Now as we venture upon an uncharted sea, we are confident that Mr. Ripley ' s help and direction have prepared us to weather the storms of life. Donald MacNeil and Norman Jason are our student council representatives. This year we were especially proud to have Ann Revelle. Doris Jason. Meredith Parsons, and Hans Koehler elected to membership in the National Honor Society. For his outstanding per- formance on the football squad. Bernard Sweeney received the WCOP Award. The business we have taken up includes the ordering of our class rings. We also sponsored a successful Christmas Dance, which was originated by our class last year. In May our class will sponsor the annual Junior Prom. For the last two years we have sold coke at the basketball games, and this enterprise has proved highly profitable. To our class this year we wish to welcome Margaret and Priscilla Fraser. who have moved here from Scituate. We have experienced a very pleasant and profitable year, and we are looking forward to being seniors with great anticipation. 18 HISTORY Most Popular Best Looking Best Personality- Most Likely to Succeed O: course our Freshman year was exciting and important, for we had just entered a new school and it was also our first year of senior high. But being wise old sophomores is even more fun. Six new classmates make up for the three that we lost. Our first class meeting in the Freshman class brought forth these results: Walter Howe was elected as our student council representative. This year ' s officers are as follows: Janice Cowdrey President Marcia James Vice-President Hope Truesdell Secretary Russell Pratt Treasurer Sports and other school activities are participa;ed in by a majority of our class. We ' re ex- pecting Hope Truesdell and Marcia James to really boost the Press Club, so that eventually we may- have a paper ourselves. This year ' s first year French class, which was unusually large, has made the French Club quite a bit larger. We the class of 1955 wish the graduating class the best of luck. Guiding us through the frenzies of freshman days is Mr. Harris, who is also our social science teacher. At a class meeting held in the fall we elected Bradford Tite, President; Richard Sullivan, Vice- President; Alberto Meallo, Treasurer; Jane Wilmore, Secretary. Student Council posts went to Judith Ingram and Bradford Tite. Our class has been happy to welcome six new members this year. Born in Barcelona, Spain. Peter Giepen has lived in New York City and Nantucket before coming to Cohasset. William Han- lon, a native of Jersey City, prefers New England to the South, where he lived for two years. Alden Bradley, who came to us from Amherst, Massachusetts, is delighted to be living near the salt water. He anticipates a very pleasant summer vacation. Carolyn Casady says. I love Cohasset. The town itself is beautiful and everyone is so friendly. Having lived in the West. Jane Water- man compares favorably the people of New England with those of Out where the West begins. Barbara Salvaggi, too, has only kind words for both town and school. Before coming to Cohasset, Barbara attended Central Junior High in Quincy. The big event on our social calendar was a Halloween party where fun for all was the order of the evening. We are looking forward to other socials in the spring. 20 EIGHTH GRADE Fourth row. The team consisted of thirteen players, all of whom worked together very well. They tried very hard to win a game but did not succeed. Although they lost four games and tied three, they accepted the results in a sportsman-like manner. Only one player will be lost by graduation; so next year Cohasset should have a championship team. Marion Meehan, Janice Cowdrey, and Jerry McLaughlin were the only scorers with one goal each. Peggy McLellan was the manager of the team, with Ruth Stover as captain. The squad consisted of Marion Meehan, Shirley Meehan. Helen Salvador, Janice Cowdrey, Jerry McLaughlin, Nancy Lawson, Judith Ingram, Jane Waterman. Carolyn Casady, Paula Grassie, Paula Carolan. FOOTBALL With only six players returning from last year ' s squad, Coach Dorr had his hands full or youngsters who had no previous football experience. This and the fact that all through the season he was confronted with injuries to key men made this season one which Coach Dorr will hope to better next year. Even though we had a winless season, there were a few bright spots to look back on. The most important one was Norm Frates ' all-around play and his being elected to the South Shore All- Scholastic Team. Bill Reid. a senior playing football for the first time, also won an All-Star berth. The spirit of the townspeople has helped the boys tremendously. To show how much they ap- preciate that backing, the boys will be out next year with the determination to win. Coach Dorr has some very fine potentials to work with during the next few years. We the graduating class of 53 wish him and the future teams the best of luck always. SCORES OF ' 52 GAMES Cohasset 13 Weston 33 Cohasset Wayland 8 Cohasset W. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL As the ball swished into the basket, the basketball season was off to a start. The team was made up mostly of juniors and two seniors. They had a successful start and could have been successful all the way through if they hadn ' t lost two of their first team players in the middle of the season. Although the team won six and lost eight, they totaled 402 points this season with Shirley Salvador high scorer with 227 points followed by Connie Longo with 87. The first team was made up of the following players: Nancy Coggan and Shirley Salvador co- captains; Connie Longo, Carolyn Ferreira, Helen Salvador, Patricia Marks, Marion Meehan, Shirley Meehan. and Helen Beal. Coach Dorr was again handicapped with injuries to key men. Playing the first two games without the assistance of Bernard Sweeney and Carlo La- grotteria, Cohasset was off to a poor start. With Bernie and Lag back. Coach Dorr ' s team began to roll. After winning two of their next four encounters, four first-stringers were idle with injuries or illnesses. Despite this fact, Cohasset went on to complete a fairly good season of winning three and losing eleven. Although Cohasset had a losing season, we can be proud of Norm Jason ' s average of 21. points a game. His average was third best in the league. Norm will be back next year along with Hans Koehler. a brilliant center, and Ed Wadsworth. a promising Sophomore. Bernie Sweeney one of the league ' s best shooters, will return along with these three. Cohasset would be close to the top next season with these four lettermen returning. In this year we had an undefeated season in league competition. The high lights of this season ' s play were Bob Sweeney ' s no-hitter against our arch rival. Scituate. and Louis Figueiredo ' s .500 batting average. Hoping to duplicate last year ' s mark, we shall have to work extra hard, for only three letter men will be returning. Consequently. Coach Dorr will be fielding a team of novices, except for two starters of last year s team. Though not too potent at bat. Cohasset expects to make an impressive record because of the spirit and hustle of the team. With these assets, the team has great potential ability, so Cohasset should have a good baseball team for years to come. STUDENT COUNCIL To speak for the whole student body is the aim of the Student Council, and to accomplish any- thing that will better their welfare is its goal. The Student council members are elected by their respective homerooms at the start of the school year. The junior high is allowed one representative for each grade, whereas there arc- two repre- sentatives from each high school grade. Brian Anglin speaks for the seventh grade, and Paula Grassie represents the eighth grade. Mr. J. Edward Harris is our advisor. The senior high mem- bers are as follows: Freshman Bradford Tite Judith Ingram Sophomore Edward Wadsworth Janice Cowdrey Junior Norman Jason. Vice-President Donald MacNeil, Corresponding Secretary Senior Carl Hoss Norman Frates. President Nancy Coggan. Secretary Our activities were few, but successful. Early in the fall we sold bookcovers and on February 19, 1953, we held a Record Hop in the school cafeteria; both ventures aided our financial standing. Three seniors will leave this year, and Norman Jason will automatically fall into the presidency. We, the seniors to leave, wish the Student Council of Cohasset High School all the success in the years to come. 34 Fifth Row, Left to right: R. DeCosta: P. McLellan; H. Koehler: F. Robinson. There are twenty-four members from the Junior High and thirty-three members from the Senior High, making a total of fifty-seven members. Others would like to take part in this worthwhile club, but their full schedules do not permit. Under the direction of Miss Fay, the students learn to run a library properly and efficiently. Some students devote as many as four periods a week to the Library Club. At the beginning of the year the club members elected the following officers: Meredith Parsons, President; Nancy Coggan, Secretary; Richard DeCosta, Treasurer. The Class of 1953 hopes the Library Club is just as successful next year as it has been this year. 35 36 THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Since 1947, Cohasset has had a chapter of the National Honor Society. The pur- pose of the society is to bring recognition to the students who maintain high standards of scholarship. On March tenth of this year, at an assembly attended by the student body, the par- ents of the new members and the faculty, the girls of the Hingham Chapter of the Na- tional Honor Society, with their sponsor, Miss Doris Cushing, introduced nine new mem- bers into our Osgood Chapter. From the senior class the new members were Walter Dow, Richard DeCosta, Kath- erine Pagliaro, Grace Saprito, and Carl Hoss. From the junior class four new members were elected. They were Ann Revelle, Hans Koehler, Meredith Parsons and Doris Jason. LE CLUB LAFAYETTE Le Club Fayette is primarily an organization for students taking French, but any- one interested in the aims of the club is cordially invited to join. Organized during World War II to help a family and an orphanage in Paris. Le Club Lafayette has sent many bundles of food and clothing to them in Normandy. The recipients are very ap- preciative as their warm letters and gifts show. Le Club Lafayette started the school year by sending a Christmas box to Hopital Hospice St. Vincent-de-Paul. On December 18, 1952, we had our annual Christmas party, but because of the absence of Miss Reed, our advisor, we were unable to have the candle lighting ceremony. Recently we received a set of paintings done by two boys in the orphanage. The officers of the club are Ann Revelle, President; Richard DeCosta, Vice-Presi- dent; Hope Truesdell, Secretary; Meredith Parsons, Treasurer. The following people are members: Janice Cowdrey, Patricia Grassie, Marcia James, Judy Tilden, Barbara Welch. Nicholas Buckeridge, Richard Conley, Walter Howe, Russell Pratt, Bernard Sweeney, and Edward Wadsworth. On account of the limited number of meetings this year the French Club has had difficulty in accomplishing as much as it had hoped. However, we feel that in 1953 it will be better able to continue fulfilling its aim. 37 BAND Third Iloiv, Left to right: S. Barnes; E. Wadsworth; L. Crampton ; C. Hoss; N Buckeridge; P. McLellan; R.
