Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1964 volume:

“FRANCIS KINLEY” '■‘Life has been good to me because I have not had to face some of the bitter tragedies others have had to contend with. The world has been good to me; I just h®pe I can do something for it. These words were written by Francis Kinley at the beginning of his junior year. They express the wholesome philos- ophy of a boy who, had he lived, could and would have done much for his world. Francis, unlike most boys going out for an activity, not only was a partici- pant in this activity but gave so much of himself that he excelled. -This is why the 1964 Rocket Annual has been dedicated to Francis Kinley, who would have been a member of the 1964 graduating class. Francis participated in many activities and held several offices. Among them are the following: F.F.A. member President of F. F. A. Vice Pres, of F.F.A. Secretary of F.F.A. District F. F. A. President and Reporter F.F.A. State Vice Pres. F.F.A. The publisher gets the money; The parents get the fame; The students get the annual; The staff gets the blame! School Board Mr. Craig Downing, Mr. Robert Henderson, Mr. James Basler, Mr. Clifford Robinson, Mr. Raymond Garner, Mr. Gifford McCright, Mr. Wilbur Mangold, President. This school year has been most eventful and prosperous to us all. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank each and everyone who has contributed to our success. You all have accepted your challenges and have dealt with them sat- isfactorily. Good luck to those who are graduating; may your future endeavors be fruitful. Mr. Craig Downing, Superintendent It is a real privilege and a pleasure to congratulate the members of the gradu- ating class of 1964. It is my sincere hope that this does not conclude your education. Whether it be college, trade schools, business schools, armed service, or on-the-job training--makes no difference--because we need all of these to help us grow as a nation. The diploma you have now received after four years of high school does not entitle you to stop your education. This was just the first step toward earning your place in society. The road ahead will not always be a smooth road but one with many hills, curves, and pitfalls. As you continue on this road of education, be ever mind- ful of the motto, Impossible is Un-American. May God bless you all and may He grant you a long, happy, and a safe journey down the road of life.” Mr. Keith Allenstein, Principal Nobody can say we’re not watching the game! MRS. Sr. High Basketball This year proved to be a reasonably successful year with a record of 4 wins and 13 losses. It was a successful year experience wise as the under- classmen received a lot of experience in their ball-playing. The starting team was composed of three seniors, one junior and two freshmen. Next year should prove to be a very successful year as both the guard and forward courts will have a lot of experience. Front Row: David Kerr, Gary McCright, Mike Woods, Ron Mulvaney, David Henderson, Greg Knott, Doran Butschi, Steve Henderson. Second Row: Manager Ken Ludolph, Jim Coleman, Gary O'Hara, Dick Butschi, Greg Bressler, Danny Mollenhauer, Randy Shackelford, Denny Henderson, Chuck Wirt, Coach Ron Ahrens. Sr. High Basketball This year did not prove to be a successful season according to the won-lost record, but the experience received by the boys will prove valuable in coming sea- sons. There was only one senior on this squad of seventeen boys. The record for the season was one win and sixteen losses, but many of these losses were due to inexperience. These mistakes proved valuable in some aspects of the game, as they will not be made again next year--we hope! ! We HOPE to have a better season next year. They finished in a tie for first in two meets and tied for eleventh out of twenty-one schools with eight points in the Class C' District Track Meet at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. The events they participated in were: shot put, high jump, discus, pole vault, broad jump, mile run, half-mile run, 100 yard, and 220 yard dash, 440 run, mile relay, 880 yard relay, and 440 yard relay. High School Baseball The Coggon High School baseball team started out the season with only two seniors on the baseball squad. This meant that there would be a lot of in- experienced ballplayers on the squad. This didn't stop these boys, however, as they did their best in the games they played. Gary McCright and Jim McRoberts, the two seniors, will be missed by the squad during next year's season. The underclassmen gained a lot of experience which will prove valuable next year. Dave Henderson, freshman, won the batting title with a batting average of .430. The next three were Gary McCright with . 350, Mike Woods with .239, and Steve Henderson with .226. The record for the season was one win and seven losses. Days of Wine and Roses The fragrance of roses filled the air the evening of May 9, 1964, as the annual Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom was held in the school gym. The theme was carried out by the setting’ and decorations which made one visualize that he were in Paris. An artificial fountain was made and placed in the center of the gym. The entrance was decorated with gold streamers and roses. Blue and white streamers alternated to form a false ceiling. Twelve red roses formed the centerpiece of the head table with the remaining tables having each a single red rose. A very enjoyable and memorable evening was enjoyed by all.
