Editor.............................Jo Ann Kimir Assistant Editor................Sandy Penningroth Business Manager...................John Adams Photographer..........................Paul Blair m emoriam MRS. GLADYS JOHNSTON July 10, 1900 - September 3, 1957 Few teachers are as devoted to their profession as was Mrs. Gladys Johnston. Not only was she a devoted teacher but a devoted friend and neighbor as well. Due to her untimely death the class of ’59 was left temporarily without a home room teacher in their junior year. She had been their home room advisor in 1957. Mrs. Johnston’s field was natural and social sciences. JAMES GEORGE ARDUSIR November 28, 1940 - October 25, 1958 All who knew' Jim, a fellow member of the 1959 senior class who was killed in an unfortunate farm accident, welcomed his friendly smile. Jim was always willing to give a helping hand, and he was a friend to one and all. He was president of the FFA and vice-president of the Student Council. He also played half-back on the football team. 2 Hot lunch line at 11:40 Pat O’Hara and Mrs. DuBois transact business i TWIRLERS: Nancy Smith, Shery Long, Mary Guthrie, Pat O’Hara, Elaine Barker, Karen Hungerford, Janet Swindle, Beverly Graves, Sandy Price. LEARNING HOW TO STUDY begins in Miss Shirley’s first grade. WHILE MRS. ADAMS DEMONSTRATES the art of stringing popcorn, pupils portray the art of eating. TO THE CLASS OF 1959: Best wishes for a wonderful future. I am sure that if you put forth the effort throughout life that you have shown in your senior-year projects, your success is assured. On behalf of the faculty, I com- pliment you for being a fine class and a credit to your school and community. JOHN J. MINGES, Superintendent ini A tra tion 1958 SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS: Wilbur Mangold, President Raymond Garner, Orvie McCright, Superintendent Minges, Dr. I. D. Ondler, Orie Long. Not present for the picture: Mrs. Leota Read, treasurer, and Philomena McAreavy, secretary. Unless there is learning there is no teaching. If we all strive to gain more knowledge each day, then we become students. When we become students, the task of the teacher is made easy. Always aim for a greater degree of skill and a richer, more plentiful storehouse of knowledge. HARRY E. BROWN Secondary Principal To the Members of the Senior Class of 1959: For six years I have watched you increase in wisdom and in stature: and it is hoped, in favor of God and your fellow man. This is a time of decision for each of you. For some, it means the end of formal education. For others, it means continued training. For all, it means accepting the duty that accom- panies each right as an American citizen. With this letter I wish the utmost in happiness and prosperity for each of you. God’s blessing on all your future endeavors. LLOYD ADAMS Elementary Principal ELEANOR DuBOIS, Office Secretary THE MAIN OFFICE from which all an- nouncements are made, where all buzzers and signals originate and all business is transacted to This trophy, purchased through the athletic fund, is to be given annually to the outstanding senior letterman on the basis of sportsmanship, leadership, and perseverance. As a tribute to the memory of Jim, the boys on the senior high football team bronzed the ball used in the Regis game (the last game Jim played). This ball was pre- sented to Jim’s parents. Coach Carney says, “Even though many of the men on this year’s team were green, they played very well. Winter Turned Marching Band Into Concert Band With good leadership from dual majorettes, Nancy Smith and Sandy Price, marching band performed four half-time shows, marched at Vinton, for Sweet Com Day, and performed in the Coggon Homecoming Parade. Following the completion of football season, the band moved indoors to con- centrate cn more pleasing melodies. With the addition of the musician foot- ball players, the band developed into a smooth-working concert ensemble and presented three concerts. The Christmas concert featured symphonic band arrangements of well- known carols, overtures, and concert marches. Good “pop’’ music with the emphasis on show tunes was stressed in the spring concert. Other public demonstrations by the band included the ALL-AC Music Fes- tival at Center Point, the Spring Music Contest, and, of course, the lively PEP BAND performances at the basketball games. The unusual occurred when Mr. Hanson’s English classes prepared all copy and layouts for issue No. 4. All other issues were the work of the staff with the co-operation of the advanced typing class to edit, type, and mimeograph. Special help on journalism was given through a personal discussion with David Forsythe of SUI’s Publications Department and the SUI Critical Sur- vey, which gave this summary comment, “Much improved and outstanding newspaper.
