Seven tournaments were host to the Tornado talkers. They were Washington Rural, Fredonia, Topeka, Pitts- burg, Emporia, Wyandotte and the district tourney at Emporia. The Golden Tornado In their first game under new head coach Don Mcwhirt, the Tornado surprised every- body by tying Joplin 7-7 in the opener. The Gridmen's second game resulted in a 19-12 victory over Columbus. The McWhirtmen next beat Parsons 13-U. In the Fort Scott contest the underrated Tornado downed the favored Tigers 13-12. The upstart Comets of Chanute, however, dropped the Tornado from the ranks of the undefeated by the score of 14-13. This big upset might have been the cause of the 32-7 and 40-7 threshings at the hands of Springfield and Pittsburg respectively. The Tornado came back to trounce Iola 33-14. Entering the season finale against Independence, the third-ranked team in the state, Coffeyville was definitely the underdog. Despite the gallant efforts put up by the Tornado, the powerful Bulldogs posted a 26-O victory. .Sf-su Vt- Y Q53 nlgx as .6444 Q. . To begin with, our own Sharon Garter became one of the four cheerleaders. Then, David Schichtle stepped from the Gales to play regularly in Tornado basketball. Mike Downe and Eddie Seaton made the Times' headlines as record-breaking swimmers. Two of the three candidates for basketball queen, Jon Kay Brogan and the queen, Nana Collins, were sophomores. Away from the sports field, twenty-five of our class became members of the Sigma Pi Honor Society. ln the Drum Corp, three sophomores, Judy Helkenbulrfg, Becky Hurd, and Carol Lake, jumped the gun and became members at the end of the first semester, ln debate, ike Renz and Robert Sullivan did well as beginners. Because there were so many outstanding sophomores, including those in Kavalkade, it is impossible to mention them all here. In other words, 1959's sophomores were the greatest.
