DEBATE 1qn , f ' ferrell, collie, and tremain load up for their 3000 mile journey to tournaments in phoenix, arizona and laredo, texas. in the past, ofcourse, ccjc debate squads have seen both ultimate success and utter failure. the 1970-71 squad, to be sure, saw both. the overall record, however, is quite glossy as jim collie's teams traveled thousands of miles to 20 tournaments f including the national phi rho pi tournament in st. louis - bringing home over 20 indi- vidual, team, and squad awards. this season was actual- ly rather typical as coach collie led ccjc debaters mark tis-wufvas at cv .--0 style: whatever that is. holcomb and larry carter to a national championship last year and coached holcomb to the top national hon- or in extemporaneous speaking the year before. 1971 honors include a first place win of the region five tour- nament in coffeyville by kerry tremain and tom ferrell. collie,s laurels don't stop at coaching, though, since he is also a regional phi rho pi vice president. tremain, a freshman debater, was recently named regional student vice president at the st. louis tournament. , , I , , middle: squad fleft to rightj includes: coach collie, jim hastings, alan a Pracuce Sesslon Shfjws ferre I develovmg ms howarter, kerry tremain, tom ferrell, and mike hastings. below: the awards banquet of the national tournament was held in the motor hotel .L ,. ,.t,. where most of the competitors were staying.

i voip' the biggest event to hit ccjc was the brewer and shipley concert. beginning with sponsor carol smith fto whom this book is dedicatedj the college union activities board survived dances, movies, parties, parades, concerts, and coffeehous- es, until carol's resignation at the first semester's end. but even without miss smith, the cuab continued to have suc- cessful activities Y highlighted by the brewer and shipley concert - under the direction of ross richards, who also manages the book store and instructs in the area of busi- ness. cuab members - the people you may harass or ap- plaud for the activites mentioned above f include: carla folk, president, crystal heady, vice president, debbie mann, secretary, Connie archer, recreation chairman, debbie camp- bell and jerry heape, special events, randy mathis, cultural affairs and forums, betsy shewell, dances and socials, and jim hastings, publicity. cuab's executive board members are as follows from top to bottom: crystal heady, vice presidentg debi mann, secretary, jim hastings, publicity chairman, and carla folk, president. CUAB all work and no play is not the way the executive board does things. so ross richards, their always smiling sponsor, . . . sf M '21-.Fl .......f J 4,.,. among the many seasonal get togethers thrown by the cuab was the halloween party which included a spook house and two scary movies.

E Va X '3- 3 ' , , s f 4 ff 5- A nz., N 'V '5a'i.t54X1!ib the eta gamma chapter of phi theta kappa, national honorary scholastic fraternity for junior college stu- dents, was established at ccjc in l949. members are chosen by a faculty committee upon the basis of scho- lastic achievement in liberal arts courses of the col- lege. pledge and initiate members are installed at the close of each semester. this year five members represented our chapter at the national phi theta kappa convention in biloxi, missis- sippi. the highlight of each year is the annual honor's banquet. students from area high schools who have made scholastic achievements and our members are honored. at the end of the year a picnic was held at which new officers were elected. ' phi theta kappa for 1970-7l includes Cpicturedj members: c. w. g powell, ken sullivan, sally smith, mary shobe, shelley smith, janet earnes, pearl erickson, warren stewart, randy phelps, mark byard, susan hart, donna moyer, gail norton, gail messner, russ hutchins, bob hulsey, randy mathis, jo parsons, michele cross, phyllis harvey, norma wooldridge, joan gordon, deanna booth, susie Sprague, con- nie archer, and nancy gudgen. pledges for next year arejohn burch, chip barger, dan burke, gary halderman, david doss, janet sandon, connie birdwell, margie thompson, and kathy white. not pictured are: ronald bachman, patty flanders, claudia hamlin, and betsy shewell, members, gerald peters and sue rhodes, pledges. THETA CHI SIGMA theta chi sigma is the secretarial sorority at ccjc. it was organized in the school year 1946-47 with 40 charter members. club colors are blue and yel- low, and the motto is to keep earning, keep learning. regular meetings are held once a month with a variety of programs planned. some of the 1970-7l activities included a barbecue, sponsoring a queen candidate and float at football homecoming, a booth at the all-school car- nival, a christmas party for the members' mothers, and a basketball home- coming queen candidate. jo parsons was the football queen candidate while pearl erickson went for basketball honors. in march members showed ap- preciation to their bosses at the annual bosses banquet. theta chi sigma worked with the national secretaries association of coffeyville in april to celebrate national secretaries week and the 25th anniversary of theta chi, and the year was closed with a party given by the freshmen for the sopho- more members.
