it was one of those gray-tone days when all the clouds were soiled and blend- ed perfectly with their deteriorating steel-blue frames. the sidewalks were deckled where semi-rich top-soil or untidy plant-life had overstepped their boundaries. an uncertain light bounced crazily through a smudgy window and formed a fuzzy figure on the unswept floor. i began to wander moodily, reflecting upon the shape of the day. it was a real downer. but then, from the end of a lonely corridor, there came a faint whispering, beckoning me to investigate. as a door approached, the sound grew louder until suddenly it became music, an organic rhythm which seemed to come from deep down inside. i opened the door. there was no one there. but still the air vibrated with fran- tic strains of emotion. the auditorium was empty but the music played on. then i sensed movement. a curtain rippled lazily and i glimpsed the intent form of luther norman, bent over the dual keyboard of an electric organ. the score was unreal, yet it was absolutely real. i listened. we talked. then i listened, then we talked. as i walked out the door, luther's electric heartbeat was still throbbing, pumping life into a sluggish world. though it had only been half an hour, the carpet now reached out with clean, soft fingers to caress the feet, and the fig- ure on the floor was sharp and clear. outside, soil and plants were freshly cor- ralled, and a melty-butter sun sent silver-gold rays shimmering off cotton puff clouds. life had a pulse again. neither a phantom of the opera nor a lonely champagne-music maker , luther norman is about as actual as they come. editor 16
