The Senior Class Presents Reflector 1963 Coebu Coeburn High School Coeburn, Virginia itinity Library iron ii 1 1 First Baptist, St. Mary ' s, Presbyterian, Church of God, First Methodist Foreword Some people in our section of Virginia have voiced an opinion that we Southwesterners do not get as much recognition as those east of Roanoke. We, as predomi- nately Anglo-Saxon descended natives (the purest strain in the nation), are proud of our Mountain Empire and have tried to picture some of its highlights. On the division pages, we, the annual staff, show some of our assets. In other parts of the book, we feature attractions like beautiful Powell Valley, Coeburn from Wise Mountain Road, High Knob area, Barter Theater, Natural Tunnel, Breaks of the Cumberland, and repre- sentative churches. We take this opportunity to thank Mr. Dotson and all members of the faculty who have helped us along the way; also, we are grateful to Mr. Morris Burchette, our photographer, who has been so patient and helpful. Last, but certainly not least, we wish to thank all of our adver- tisers, without whose help we could not publish this book. We trust that we have protrayed our school and area in such a manner that in years to come the 1963 REFLECTOR will refresh your memories of the happy days spent at Coeburn High School. 2 High Knob Area Near Norton, Virginia Aerial of Coebum Activities 51-72 Barter Theater Abingdon, Virginia Clinch Valley College Wise, Virginia Classes 19-50 Athletics 73-80 Wise County Bowling Center Wise, Virginia Dr. Kelly Day Features 81-88 Advertisements 89-104 Opening Section Administration 11-18 1 -10 Contents 4 Coeburn from Wise Mountain Road 5 6 7 Beautiful Powell Valley Wise County, Virginia r Dedication MRS. AMMA RAY This, the 1963 REFLECTOR, is dedicated to one who is of great service to her school and an outstanding person in her community. She is always willing to lend a helping hand, and her bright smile lights the day for everyone. She is an industrious worker, has a gay personality, and above all is a lady. She is forthright, honest, and sincere. Whether she is buoyant and gay, or quite and meditating— she is always the same— smiling, ambitious, and trusting in God. It is with great joy that we dedicate this, the twenty-sixth edition of the REFLECTOR, to MRS. AMMA RAY, our librarian. 10 Gertie o (p r o(? eSS PROGRAM THURSDAY, MAY 2, 1963 HONORING DR. J. J. The Student Councils activities include spon- soring clean-up campaigns, placing a suggestion box in school for suggestions to improve our school, trying to create friendliness toward all students and many other things that will improve our school. The members of the Student Council are the presidents and vice presidents of each homeroom class. The officers of the Student Council are elected by the entire student body. The officers include the following: President from the Senior class, Vice president from the junior class, secretary from the sophomore class, and reporter from the freshman class. The first sponsor of the Student Council was Mr. Carl McConnell and the present one is Mr. Carter Collins. Club is organized in the high schools to give the students a chance to learn about retailing through two channels of the program. The first part is the classroom training where a student learns how to sell goods, and how to meet some problems encountered in the business world. The second part enables the student to apply his techniques of selling to his job. The outstanding purposes of this organization are to develop leadership, and high ethical standards in business, and to develop an appreciation of the in- fluence of the fine arts of business. It also creates in each member an abiding interest in his chosen occupation of the opportunity of contributing his share in worthy home and community membership. On Their Way To School 56 D. E. We put a Christmas tree in the main hall of the school where the student body placed the food and toys. Just before Christmas, the gifts were distributed to many families.
