The Coeburn High School Future Home- makers of America Club was organized in 1956 with Clara Belle Eblen as president. Since that time the club has become affiliated with the state and national F. H. A. Two years ago, the F.H. A. Clubs in this area organized the Black Diamond Federation, which, at present, has a membership of more than 135. The year 196 1-62 has been a successful one for our club. We have carried out many pro- jects, such as serving dinners for different organizations, selling cookbooks, having bake sales, selling Christmas cards, and remodeling the First-Aid Room. 25 a; c:i

The Distributive Education Club at Coe- burn High School is very similar to all the other state D. E. programs, which we operate on a state -wide plan affiliated with the Natioifal Distributive Education. In the D. E. Department, we strive to give the student class-room instructions which can be readily administered to his on-the-job training. In the classroom, the student receives in- structions in the following: job orientation, store salesmanship, advertising, store arith- metic, store speech, store ope rations, and customer services, merchandise information, and visual merchandise. The on-the-job training received by the student is aimed, not only to benefit the stu- dent, but also to give an educational asset to the community by having better trained per- sonnel in the field of distribution. Hi-y The Hi-Y Club was organized in the fall of 1959-1960 t hr ou g h the aid of Mr. Carl McConnell and Mr. Fulton K. Johnson. Its purpose is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community high standards of Christian character. The club was named for the late Dr. James N. Hillman, a native of Coeburn and a former superintendent of Wise County Schools. He also served this .section for many years as pres- ident of Emory and Henry College. 26
