■ a 1961 gflwtor doeburn clpjol (docburn, Virginia J|nrefijorrt The REFLECTOR staff has really had ups and downs this year. Of course our principal ' s illness and death have depressed and saddened the whole student body and faculty. We feel, though, we have been very fortunate to have Mr. Dotson serve us first as assistant principal, then acting, and now our new principal. We wish to express our appreciation to him for all he has done for us. This edition of oiur annual is the first one to include a whole year ' s activities. We hope you will like it, and that it will help you remember the happy moments you spent at Coeburn High School. Elaine Edwards Baker, Editor-in-Chief Carolyn Bray, Business Manager 2

Petttcatinn IN LOVING TRIBUTE God, in His wisdom, took from us on April 13, 1961, our beloved principal, Mr. Carl McConnell. While we know that our loss is surely Heaven ' s gain, we feel this loss very deeply. Before coming to Coebmn as a mathematics teacher in 1942, Mr. McConnell had taught in neighboring Scott and Russell County schools since 1932, when he began his teaching career in a little country school near Dungannon, Virginia. In January of 1952 he was appointed principal of Coebum High School. He served in that capacity until his death. MR. CARL McConnell Mr. McConnell was a devoted member of the Coeburn Methodist Church, a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Official Board of the Church. He was a past president of Coeburn K i w a n i s Club and the Wise County Education Association. In fact, he served numerous com- munity and county organizations in an official capacity. It would be quite impossible to mention all of Mr. McConnell ' s unselfish services to his church, family, school, community, state, and nation. He was truly a teacher and counselor to many and a friend and servant to all who knew him. In loving tribute, then, we dedicate the twenty-fourth edition of the REFLECTOR to the memory of our dear friend and principal, MR. CARL McConnell. 4
