Of course our principal ' s illness and death have depressed and saddened the whole student body and faculty. We feel, though, we have been very fortunate to have Mr. Dotson serve us first as assistant principal, then acting, and now our new principal. We wish to express our appreciation to him for all he has done for us. This edition of oiur annual is the first one to include a whole year ' s activities. We hope you will like it, and that it will help you remember the happy moments you spent at Coeburn High School. Elaine Edwards Baker, Editor-in-Chief Carolyn Bray, Business Manager 2 Contents titnintstrattem and acuity (tlJErtisentettts jActiiiitiEs JI[EaiurE0 Qllasses jAtliletics 3 Petttcatinn IN LOVING TRIBUTE God, in His wisdom, took from us on April 13, 1961, our beloved principal, Mr. Carl McConnell. While we know that our loss is surely Heaven ' s gain, we feel this loss very deeply. Before coming to Coebmn as a mathematics teacher in 1942, Mr. McConnell had taught in neighboring Scott and Russell County schools since 1932, when he began his teaching career in a little country school near Dungannon, Virginia. In January of 1952 he was appointed principal of Coebum High School. He served in that capacity until his death. MR. CARL McConnell Mr. McConnell was a devoted member of the Coeburn Methodist Church, a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Official Board of the Church. He was a past president of Coeburn K i w a n i s Club and the Wise County Education Association. In fact, he served numerous com- munity and county organizations in an official capacity. It would be quite impossible to mention all of Mr. McConnell ' s unselfish services to his church, family, school, community, state, and nation. He was truly a teacher and counselor to many and a friend and servant to all who knew him. In loving tribute, then, we dedicate the twenty-fourth edition of the REFLECTOR to the memory of our dear friend and principal, MR. CARL McConnell. 4 ministration anct Jfacnltg 5 upBrintEndent DR. McConnell The Student Council of Coebum High School came into existen.ce in 1954 with George Culbertson as its president and Mr. Carl McConnell as its sponsor. It was created with the following purposes in mind: to establish and maintain high standards of honor, to encourage the loyal support of student- citizens, to create a respect and ambition for higher scholastic attainments, and to provide a medium between students and faculty. Throughout the past six years the Student Council has played a very important role in the lives of the members of the Student Body of Coebum High School. Some of the things which the Student Council has attempted to bring about are organization of new clubs, respect for school property, high ideals of sportsmanship, friendliness toward all students, common courtesy at all times, and a host of other ideals. The Student Council is the most representative organization in our school and one to which every member of Coebum High School should look with respect, for it is an organization which works entirely for the good of the Student Body. 46 The 90 Club of Coeburn High School was organized in 1959 by Mr. Carl McConnell. Its first president was Earl Maine. The main purpose of the 90 Club is to stimulate greater interest in the scholastic activities of our school courses. Another purpose is to renew interest in scholastics by providing a goal for every serious student. To become a member of this club, one must have achieved an average of 90 in all his subjects at the end of each semester. The officers are chosen as follows:Chairman from the senior members, vice-chairman from the junior members, secretary from the sophomore members, reporter from freshmen, and treasurer from sub-freshman mem- bers. There is no honor or distinction higher than to be a member of the 90 Cl ub. Ollub MR. CARL McConnell First row: Elaine Edwards, Chairman; John Hilton, Vice-Chairman. Since that time the club has become affiliated with the state and national F.H.A. ' s. Two years ago, the F.H.A. Clubs in this area organized the Black Diamond Federation, which, at present, has a membership of more than 135. The year 1960-61 has been a successful one financially. The club has served dinners for dif- ferent organizations, has had bake sales, and has sold Christmas cards. The D. E. C. A. Club is organized in the high schools to give the students a chance to learn about retailing through two channels of the program. The first part is the classroom training where a student learns how to sell goods, and how to meet some problems encountered in the business world. The second part enables the student to apply his techniques of selling to his job. The outstanding purposes of this organization are to develop leadership, and high ethical stand- ards in business, and to develop an appreciation of the influence of the fine arts of business. It also creates in each member an abiding interest in his chosen occupation of the opportimity of contributing his share in worthy home and community member- ship. Morning Devotion The Tri-Hi-Y club is the young women ' s Christian as- sociation in the high school, committed to a Christian pur- pose. This is a non-denominational organization composed of high school students of all faiths, who desire to belong to a club interested in moral and spiritual values. This organiza- tion is not a sorority, nor is it a social group. The Tri-Hi-Y emblem is a small triangle and a torch inscribed in a circle in the center. The triangle stands for the whole personality, body, mind, and spirit. The circle signifies the circle of friendship of girls all over the world. The torch denotes the Light of the World, the center of our program. Our Tri-Hi-Y Club has the largest membership since its founding in 1956. The Tri-Hi-Y Club is responsible for the daily devotions, the blessings said before each lunch period, and the Thought for the Week. We have been very active in participating with other Tri- Hi-Y Clubs in sports. We have played Powder-Puff Football, and Basket Brawl, and have won all our games. We have participated in charitable activities in the com- munity. 52 Patrol First row: R. Smith. J. Wheatley, P. Buchanan, H. Hamilton, V. Smith. Second row: W. Hale, C. Foster, D.
